STUDIES RELATED TO WILDERNESS WILDERNESS AREAS In accordance with the provisions of the Wilderness Act (Public Law 88-577, Sept. 3, 1964) and the Conference Report on Senate bill 4, 88th Congress, the U.S. Geological Survey and the U.S. Bureau of Mines are making mineral surveys of wilderness and primitive areas. Areas officially desig­ nated as "wilderness," "wild," or "canoe" when the act was passed were incorporated into the National Wilderness Preservation System. The act provided that areas under consideration for Wilderness designation should be studied for suitability for incorporation into the Wilderness System. The mineral surveys constitute one aspect of the suitability studies. This report discusses the results of a mineral survey of some national forest lands in the Alpine Lakes study area, Washington, that may be considered for wilderness designation. L. Gualtieri and George C. Simmons, U.S. Geological Survey, and H. K. Thurber and Michael S. Miller, U.S. Bureau of Mines SUMMARY 2 The Alpine Lakes area, about 324 square miles (839 km ), is rugged terrain on the crest of the central Cascade Range of Washington State. It includes the proposed Enchantment Lakes Wilderness of about 54 square miles (140 km ), the proposed Alpine Lakes Wilderness of about 196 square miles (508 km^), the area between the two proposed wildernesses, and a small area southwest of the proposed Alpine Lakes Wilderness, in parts of the Snoqualmie and Wenatchee National Forests. The study included reconnaissance geologic mapping, an aeromagnetic survey, geochemical sampling, and examination of mines, prospects, and claims. County records show that about 435 lode and placer claims, 60 of which are patented, have been located in the study area since the 1880's. Most mining claims lie near the edges of granitic intrusive masses along the west and south sides of the area. Although no established mining districts exist, mining claims are mostly in groups, and the study of mines and prospects was divided into nine areas containing most of the claims. A total of 23 tons of ore has been produced from three small mines in the area. Probably additional small production resulted from exploratory work in other areas but no records are available. U.S. Geological Survey personnel collected a total of 2,986 samples for analysis: 1,853 stream-sediment samples, 1,127 rock samples, and 6 panned concentrates. The entire area was systematically sampled and rocks were sampled in detail; areas in which anomalous amounts of metal were detected were examined to determine the source of the metals.

Zartman INTRODUCTION From the eastern-most edges of suburban Seattle, the Skykomish River quadrangle stretches east across the low rolling hills and broad river valleys of the Puget Lowland, across the forested foothills of the North Cascades, and across high meadowlands to the bare rock peaks of the Cascade crest. The quadrangle straddles parts of two major river systems, the Skykomish and the Snoqualmie Rivers, which drain westward from the mountains to the lowlands (figs. 1 and 2). In the late 19th Century mineral deposits were discovered in the Monte Cristo, Silver Creek and the Index mining districts within the Skykomish River quadrangle. Soon after came the geologists: Spurr (1901) studied base- and precious- metal deposits in the Monte Cristo district and Weaver (1912a) and Smith (1915, 1916, 1917) in the Index district. General geologic mapping was begun by Oles (1956), Galster (1956), and Yeats (1958a) who mapped many of the essential features recognized today. Areas in which additional studies have been undertaken are shown on figure 3. Our work in the Skykomish River quadrangle, the northwest quadrant of the Wenatchee 1° by 2° quadrangle, began in 1975 and is part of a larger mapping project covering the Wenatchee quadrangle (fig. 1).     USDA Forest Service, Alaska Region DESIGNATION ORDER for the Kenai Lake-Black Mountain Research Natural Area on the Chugach National Forest Seward Ranger District, Alaska Background: In September 2000, the Forest Supervisor recommended establishment of four new Research Natural Areas (RNAs) in his Preferred Alternative for the Revised Land and Resource Management Plan of the Chugach National Forest. The Record of Decision for the Revised Forest Plan, [which I] signed in May 2002, documented the decision to follow the Forest Supervisor’s recommendation to designate four Research Natural Areas on the Forest. Among these is the Kenai Lake-Black Mountain RNA north of Seward, Alaska. That decision was the result of an analysis of the factors listed in 36 CFR 219.25 and Forest Service Manual 4063.41. Results of that analysis are documented in the Revised Land and Resource Management Plan for the Chugach National Forest, the Final Environmental Impact Statement for the Chugach National Forest Land Management Plan Revision, and the Establishment Record for the Kenai Lake-Black Mountain RNA. All of these documents are available to the public from the Chugach National Forest, 3301 “C” Street, Suite 300, Anchorage, AK 99503-3998.     EVERETT MOUNTAINEERS Recommended Winter Summits Snow and weather conditions greatly influence the difficulty of winter scrambles. Because conditions change very quickly, things like road access, avalanche hazard, strenuousness, and summit success can vary a tremendous amount. So these ratings are only a rough comparison of the peaks. Winter scrambling can be a dangerous activity. Be a smart scrambler -- be willing to turn back if conditions are unsafe. Even a slight deviation from the surveyed routes may affect exposure and avalanche hazard considerably. The fact that a peak is listed here does not represent that it will be safe. Zartman INTRODUCTION Bedrock of the Chelan 1:100,000 quadrangle displays a long and varied geologic history (fig. 1). Pioneer geologic work in the quadrangle began with Bailey Willis (1887, 1903) and I. C. Russell (1893, 1900). A. C. Waters (1930, 1932, 1938) made the first definitive geologic studies in the area (fig. 2). He mapped and described the metamorphic rocks and the lavas of the Columbia River Basalt Group in the vicinity of Chelan as well as the arkoses within the Chiwaukum graben (fig. 1). B. M. Page (1939a, b) detailed much of the structure and petrology of the metamorphic and igneous rocks in the Chiwaukum Mountains, further described the arkoses, and, for the first time, defined the alpine glacial stages in the area. C. L. Willis (1950, 1953) was the first to recognize the Chiwaukum graben, one of the more significant structural features of the region. The pre-Tertiary schists and gneisses are continuous with rocks to the north included in the Skagit Metamorphic Suite of Misch (1966, p. 102-103). Peter Misch and his students established a framework of North Cascade metamorphic geology which underlies much of our construct, especially in the western part of the quadrangle. Our work began in 1975 and was essentially completed in 1980.
