The 1-bunt Stuart batholith is a Late Cretaceous calc-alkaline pluton · . canposed of intrusive phases ranging in canposition fran two-pyroxene gabbro to granite. This batholith appears to represent the plutonic counterpart of the high-alumina basalt association. Mineralogical, petrological and chrono logical characteristics are consistent with a m:::rlel in which the intrusive series evolved fran one batch of magnesian high-alumina basalt by successive crystal fractionation of ascending residual magrna. ' canputer m:::rleling of this intrusive sequence provides a quanti- tative evaluation of the sequential change of magrna CCIIlfX)sition. These calculations indicate that this intrusive suite is consanguineous, and that subtraction of early-fonned crystals £ran the oldest magrna is capable of reprcducing the entire magrna series with a remainder of 2-3% granitic liquid. Increasing f()tash discrepancies prcduced by the rrodeling may reflect the increasing effects of volatile transfer in progressively rrore hydrous and silicic melts. Mass-balances between the arrounts of curn-ulate and residual liquid ccnpare favorably with the observed arrounts of intenrediate rocks exposed in the batholith, but not with the mafic rocks. Mafic magmas probably fractionated by crystal settling, while quartz diorite and rrore granitic magrnas underwent a process of inward crystallization producing exposed gradationally zoned plutons.Aat present erosional levels. -

USFWS Outreach/Education FY2005 Protected Salmonid Survey/Angler Outreach Project Progress Report Cooperative Agreement # 134104 Report Date: March 24, 2008 Reporting Period: November 1, 2005–December 5, 2007 Project Rationale and Objectives In recent years, Wild Fish Conservancy has received reports from recreational anglers of observed violations of no-harvest rules for trout, salmon and char in the marine waters of Washington State. Such illegal take may be significantly compromising conservation efforts, and may stem in part from confusion about the geographic range of the fishery regulations or from misidentification of protected species as harvestable salmonids. To assist in the protection of the anadromous life-history forms of these fishes, this cooperative project has developed educational signage that alerts the public about state and federal harvest restrictions on at-risk salmonids and illustrates diagnostic features to facilitate species identification in the field. The signs, installed throughout coastal Washington State, target Washington’s recreational nearshore anglers. To assess recreational fishing pressure on selected species, the project has implemented a 12-month harvest survey. The objective of the survey is to collect quantitative and qualitative information volunteered by anglers, which Wild Fish Conservancy will analyze and provide to USFWS and WDFW as feedback to assist with refinement of biologically based fishing regulations that are accessible and understandable by the public. Methods The regulatory signage utilized in this project focuses on anadromous bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) and sea-run coastal cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarki clarki) and were developed by the USFWS’s Western Washington Fish and Wildlife Office (Fig. 1). AAC Publications Helmy Beckey, 1925 – 2019 Helmut Fritz Beckey, known as Helmy, was born in Seattle and died in Munich, Germany, at age 93. In his youth, he established first ascents and new routes throughout the Cascades and elsewhere. Helmy learned the basics of climbing as a member of the Mountaineers, where his aptitude was recognized early. In 1940, he and his brother Fred, who was two years older, made two extensive excursions into the Picket Range. The teenagers climbed the west ridge of Mt. Thompson and made the first ascents of Forbidden Peak, Phantom Peak, Whatcom Peak, Mt. Challenger, Crooked Thumb, Luna Peak, Mt. Fury’s East Peak, McMillan Spire’s West Spire, and Inspiration Peak. In 1941, along with the numerous first ascents and new routes in the North Cascades he did with Fred, Helmy joined Lloyd Anderson, Lyman Boyer, and Tom Campbell in the Bugaboos of British Columbia, where they completed the first ascent of the South Tower of Howser Spire. In the summer of 1942, Helmy and Fred embarked on a six-week expedition into the Coast Mountains of British Columbia. Here, the teenage brothers famously climbed the remote and challenging Mt. Waddington. It was only the second ascent of the peak, which had repelled a multitude of summit attempts. Fred Beckey wrote in the 1943 AAJ about the descent: “Helmy was hit on the knee by one of a flurry of rocks that sped down the mountain side. Zartman INTRODUCTION Bedrock of the Chelan 1:100,000 quadrangle displays a long and varied geologic history (fig. 1). Pioneer geologic work in the quadrangle began with Bailey Willis (1887, 1903) and I. C. Russell (1893, 1900). A. C. Waters (1930, 1932, 1938) made the first definitive geologic studies in the area (fig. 2). He mapped and described the metamorphic rocks and the lavas of the Columbia River Basalt Group in the vicinity of Chelan as well as the arkoses within the Chiwaukum graben (fig. 1). B. M. Page (1939a, b) detailed much of the structure and petrology of the metamorphic and igneous rocks in the Chiwaukum Mountains, further described the arkoses, and, for the first time, defined the alpine glacial stages in the area. C. L. Willis (1950, 1953) was the first to recognize the Chiwaukum graben, one of the more significant structural features of the region. The pre-Tertiary schists and gneisses are continuous with rocks to the north included in the Skagit Metamorphic Suite of Misch (1966, p. 102-103). Peter Misch and his students established a framework of North Cascade metamorphic geology which underlies much of our construct, especially in the western part of the quadrangle. Our work began in 1975 and was essentially completed in 1980. -
