PRINTERS. 1917. 4/. «/e^^i-^<^ "^ t^X^h^^ kf^i^^ ? TRANSVAAL MUSEUM ^'^ CHECK- LIST — OF — The South African LEPIDOPTERA HETEROCERA By A. J. T. JANSE. The first attempt to catalogue the iSouth African moths was made by Sir George F. Hampson in the Annals of the South African Museum, but unfortunately this work was not completed and is now about fifteen years old. Since then many additions have been made to the fami- lies treated in the above mentioned work ; most species have been described in the various journals, annals and periodicals and in the " Catalogue of the Lepidoptera Phalaena in the British Museum." It was therefore thought that a list of our moths would be welcome to the workers on South African Heterocera, especially for help in the arranging of collections and as a reference to the principal literature on the subject. Only the original descriptions have been cjuoted, as fuller information would have extended the work far beyond the limits of a check-list. For the same reason only such species have been included as have been actually recorded from South Africa or have been found by myself to belong to this fauna. My observation on the localities was not only based on my own extensive collection, but I had free access to the collections of several South African Museums and to those of many private collectors. The South African Heterocerous fauna is not sharply defined, and I have no doubt that many Central African species will be recorded from South Africa when the Wes- tern and Northern parts of our sub-continent have been bet fer explored. x\s boundary of South Africa I have taken the usual line, i.e., the southern bank of the River Zambesi and the southern boundary of x\ngola. This line is perhaps more convenient than natural, but our insect-fauna is at present too' little known to enable us to define this line in a more satisfactory way— if indeed a definite boundary exist at all. The majority of species enumerated in this list are from the Cape Colony, Natal, Orange River Colony, and the Transvaal. Comparatively few species are as yet known from South West Africa and from Southern Rhodesia, al- though the richness and peculiarity of the latter country leads one to expert many future additions. Every precaution has been taken to make this work as much up to date as possible and in some cases the kind assistance has been secured from workers in Europe and South Africa. Especially, L. B. Prout, Esq., and E. Mey rick, M.A., allowed me to draw freely on their extensive store of knowledge of groups in which they have specialised. I shall be grateful to have pointed out to me any errors and omissions, as I hope to make use of any such informa fcion when supplements to this list are issued. It is my intention to do this when a sufficient number of species new to South Africa has been discovered. A special label list, printed on one side of the paper only, which can also be used as an exchange list, can be obtained at the office of the Transvaal Museum. The order in which the genera and species are given is in many instances far from Phylogenetic, but whenever possible such an arrangement has been given. My special thanks are due to the Authorities and the Entomologist Mr. C. J. Swierstra, of the Transvaal Museum, for the facilities and assistance given me in compiling and publishing this check-list. 3 FAMILY AMATID/E (Syntoinidce). I'SICHOTOE Boisd. Mon.
