FÖRORD – ESIPUHE 13 Kuusikymmentä vuotta myöhemmin Henrik Meinander on historian pro- fessori Helsingin yliopistossa. Polku tänne on hänen oman kertomansa mu- kaan ollut epätavallisen lyhyt – ainakin maantieteellisessä mielessä. Sibelius in the Context of the Finnish-German History Veijo Murtomäki Introduction The life and career of a composer cannot be considered as an isolated case without taking into account the wider context. The history of ideas and ideologies is always part of any serious enquiry into an artist’s personal history. Therefore we must bear in mind at least four points when considering the actions of artist and his or her country. Firstly, as the eminent Finnish historian Matti Klinge has observed, "the biggest challenge for understanding history is trying to situate oneself in the preconditions of the time-period under scrutiny while remembering that it did not know what the posterity knows."[1] Writing history is not primarily a task whereby the historian provides lines for actors to speak, but rather is an attempt to understand and explain why something happened, and to construct a context including all of the possible factors involved in a certain historical process. Secondly, supporting (or not opposing) an ideology prevailing at a certain time does not mean that the supporter (or non-opponent) is committing a crime. We could easily condemn half of the European intellectuals for supporting Fascism, Nazism, Communism or Maoism, or just for having become too easily attracted by these – in their mind – fascinating, visionary ideologies to shape European or world history. Thirdly, history has always been written by the winners – and thus, historiography tends to be distorted by exaggerating the evil of the enemy and the goodness of the victor. A moral verdict must be reached when we are dealing with absolute evil, but it is rare to find exclusively good or bad persons or civilizations; therefore history is rarely an issue of black and white.

The Finnish Civil War and partisan bias: an experimental study of expressive voting Noora Pirneskoski Department of Economics Hanken School of Economics Helsinki 2019 HANKEN SCHOOL OF ECONOMICS Department of: Type of work: Economics Master’s thesis Author: Noora Pirneskoski Date: 9.4.2019 Title of thesis: The Finnish Civil War and partisan bias: an experimental study of expressive voting Abstract: My study contributes to the literature on expressive voting by demonstrating how the voting behavior of partisans differs from market choices of decisive individuals. The experiment follows a similar experiment protocol as Robbett and Matthews (2018), but with a completely new subject pool and context. By randomly assigning the respondents in a group of 1 or 5 individuals, the experiment tries to establish whether the self-identified descendants of the partisans of the Finnish Civil War give more expressive answers when voting in comparison to decisive individuals. My experiment successfully replicates the main findings of Robbett and Matthews (2018). The results show that the answers of the voters become significantly more partisan in comparison to those of decisive individuals. Moreover, the same result is found both for questions relating to the Civil War as well as contemporary politics. However, the likelihood of a correct answer did not seem to change between treatment and control. My results demonstrate that, alongside material preferences, affirmation of partisan identity can be a major driver for voter behavior. Further, the persistence of the partisan gap regarding both contemporary and the Civil War related facts suggests inheritability of voter choice over generations. The results show that there are benefits to further investigating expressive voting behavior with experimental methods and widening views on how political partisanship is understood.

THE EARLY TWENTIETH CENTURY AVANT-GARDE AND THE NORDIC COUNTRIES. AN INTRODUCTORY TOuR D’HORIzON Hubert van den Berg The Nordic countries have played only a marginal role in existing historiographic studies of the classical avant-garde. General accounts of the aesthetic avant-garde in the first decades of the twentieth cen- tury focus, as a rule, on the manifestations of this avant-garde in the main Western-European cultural capitals of the period (cf. Pio- trowski 2009). While metropolises like Paris and Berlin were un- doubtedly pivotal to the development of the avant-garde as a whole (cf. Bradbury/McFarlane 1978, Casanova 2004, Hultén 1978), there can be no doubt that the avant-garde was not confined to these cities. The main centres of avant-garde activity were not isolated bulwarks, but rather market places where the transnational avant-garde met – stemming from and giving new impulses to a plethora of smaller and larger pockets of resistance, which constituted an interrelated net- work of avant-gardists throughout Europe (with links to other con- tinents as well). This wider presence is receiving increased attention, marking a shift in general surveys of the avant-garde (cf. van den Berg/Fähnders 2009). However, a comprehensive account of the pres- ence of the avant-garde in Northern Europe is still missing. An ad- mirable, but all too brief, inventory of the avant-garde in the Nordic countries appeared as an exhibition catalogue some fifteen years ago (cf. Moberg 1995), and since then monographic studies and exhibi- tion catalogues devoted to single Nordic artists or movements (cf.
