• Friedrich Schiller - Poems
Classic Poetry Series Friedrich Schiller - poems - Publication Date: 2012 Publisher: Poemhunter.com - The World's Poetry Archive Friedrich Schiller(10 November 1759 – 9 May 1805) Johann Christoph Friedrich von Schiller was a German poet, philosopher, historian, and playwright. During the last seventeen years of his life, Schiller struck up a productive, if complicated, friendship with already famous and influential Johann Wolfgang Von Goethe. They frequently discussed issues concerning aesthetics, and Schiller encouraged Goethe to finish works he left as sketches. This relationship and these discussions led to a period now referred to as Weimar Classicism. They also worked together on Xenien, a collection of short satirical poems in which both Schiller and Goethe challenge opponents to their philosophical vision. Life Friedrich Schiller was born on 10 November 1759, in Marbach, Württemberg as the only son of military doctor Johann Kaspar Schiller (1733–96), and Elisabeth Dorothea Kodweiß (1732–1802). They also had five daughters. His father was away in the Seven Years' War when Friedrich was born. He was named after king Frederick the Great, but he was called Fritz by nearly everyone. Kaspar Schiller was rarely home during the war, but he did manage to visit the family once in a while. His wife and children also visited him occasionally wherever he happened to be stationed. When the war ended in 1763, Schiller's father became a recruiting officer and was stationed in Schwäbisch Gmünd. The family moved with him. Due to the high cost of living—especially the rent—the family moved to nearby Lorch.

The paper discusses: (1) Structure and framework conditions of the German media (a historical review of the mass media since 1945); (2) Press (including its particular reliance on local news and the creation of the world status media group, Bertelsmann AG);(3) News agencies and public relations work (which insure a "never-ending stream" of information);(4) Radio and Television (with emphasis on the Federal Republic's surprisingly large number of radio stations--public, commercial, and "guest");(5) New communication paths and media (especially communication and broadcasting satellites and cable in wideband-channel networks);(6) The profession of journalist (which still relies on on-the-job training rather than university degrees); and (7) Help for the media in the Third World (professional training in Germany of journalists and technical experts from underdeveloped countries appears to be the most appropriate way to promote Third World media).

Following the success of Ahnfrau, however, Grillparzer returns to a much more widespread use of Classical themes, motifs and vocabulary, especially in Sappho, Grillparzer's mood in the period 1816-21 was one of introversion and pessimism, and there is an emphasis on the vocabulary of quiet peace and withdrawal.

  • 1 Schiller and the Young Coleridge
Notes 1 Schiller and the Young Coleridge 1. For the details of Schiller’s career and thought I am drawing on a number of works including Lesley Sharpe, Friedrich Schiller: Drama, Thought and Politics (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1991); Walter Schafarschik, Friedrich Schiller (Stuttgart: Philipp Reclam, 1999); F. J. Lamport, German Classical Drama: Theatre, Humanity, and Nation, 1750–1870 (Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 1990); and T. J. Reed, The Classical Centre: Goethe and Weimar, 1775–1832 (Oxford: Oxford University Press, 1986), and Schiller- Handbuch, ed. Helmut Koopmann (Stuttgart: Alfred Kröner, 1998). 2. Schiller later revised the essay and published it in his Shorter Works in Prose under the title ‘The Stage Considered as a Moral Institution’ (‘Die Schaubühne als eine moralische Anstalt betrachtet’). 3. • Hegel, Tragedy, and Schiller's Wallenstein
An Unrelieved Heart: Hegel, Tragedy, and Schiller’s Wallenstein Lydia Moland In 2007 the maverick German theater director Peter Stein extended his streak of Herculean theatrical accomplishments to include a ten-hour, single-day production of Friedrich Schiller’s Wallenstein. Beyond the appeal of adding this feat to his seven-hour Oresteia and twenty-one-hour Faust, Stein pro- fessed his attraction to the timeliness of Schiller’s trilogy: his aim in produc- ing this classic, he reported, was to explore a text that has exclusively to do with politics and that touches on themes relevant to all of Europe: What political system can guarantee peace and security in Europe? What are the eternal laws of political action; to what extent is the new old and the old new; what is historical necessity and individual failure; This article, and the articles by Jennifer Ratner-Rosenhagen, Joshua Derman, Stefanos Geroulanos, and Martin Woessner, are based on papers that were presented at the workshop “Ideas in Motion,” at the Shelby Cullom Davis Center for Historical Studies, Princeton University, on March 28, 2009. We all wish to express our gratitude to Anson Rabinbach, Daniel Rodgers, and the Davis Center for organizing the workshop and for providing a forum to discuss and publish our research. I would like to thank Babson College’s Faculty Research Fund for its support of my work on this article, including the opportunity to see Wallenstein performed in Berlin in October 2007. My thanks go also to Klaus Brinkmann for his input and to Frederick Beiser for his comments on an earlier draft.
