La majorité des insectes consommés sont encore récoltés dans leurs habitats forestiers, mais il existe désormais des systèmes d’élevage dans de nombreux pays. Les insectes représentent une bonne opportunité d’associer connaissances traditionnelles et science moderne afin d’améliorer la sécurité alimentaire partout dans le monde. Cet ouvrage documente la contribution des insectes à la sécurité alimentaire. Il examine les perspectives d’élevage des insectes à échelle commerciale pour améliorer la production d’aliments destinés aux animaux et aux hommes, pour la diversification des régimes alimentaires et dans le but de contribuer aux moyens de subsistance aussi bien dans les pays en développement que développés. Il présente également les nombreuses utilisations traditionnelles, nouvelles et potentielles des insectes pour la consommation humaine directe et les opportunités et contraintes liées à leur élevage pour l’alimentation humaine et animale. Il examine l’ensemble des recherches sur des sujets comme la nutrition des insectes et la sécurité des aliments, l’utilisation des insectes dans l’alimentation animale, et la transformation et la conservation des insectes et de leurs produits. Il souligne la nécessité de développer un cadre réglementaire pour régir l’utilisation des insectes à des fins alimentaires. Enfin, il propose des études de cas et des exemples du monde entier. Les insectes comestibles constituent une alternative prometteuse à la production conventionnelle de viande, que ce soit pour la consommation directe par l’homme ou pour une utilisation indirecte comme aliments pour les animaux. Pour réaliser pleinement ce potentiel, beaucoup de travail reste à faire par un grand nombre d’intervenants concernés. Ce document aidera à mieux comprendre les nombreux rôles importants que les insectes jouent dans le maintien de la nature et de la vie humaine, et stimulera certainement le débat sur l’expansion de l’utilisation des insectes dans l’alimentation humaine et animale. Sabree, Advisor Rachelle Adams Norman Johnson Laura Kubatko Copyrighted by Alejandro Otero-Bravo 2020 Abstract Nutritional symbioses between bacteria and insects are prevalent, diverse, and have allowed insects to expand their feeding strategies and niches. It has been well characterized that long-term insect-bacterial mutualisms cause genome reduction resulting in extremely small genomes, some even approaching sizes more similar to organelles than bacteria. While several symbioses have been described, each provides a limited view of a single or few stages of the process of reduction and the minority of these are of extracellular symbionts. This dissertation aims to address the knowledge gap in the genome evolution of extracellular insect symbionts using the stink bug – Pantoea system. Specifically, how do these symbionts genomes evolve and differ from their free- living or intracellular counterparts? In the introduction, we review the literature on extracellular symbionts of stink bugs and explore the characteristics of this system that make it valuable for the study of symbiosis. We find that stink bug symbiont genomes are very valuable for the study of genome evolution due not only to their biphasic lifestyle, but also to the degree of coevolution with their hosts. i In Chapter 1 we investigate one of the traits associated with genome reduction, high mutation rates, for Candidatus ‘Pantoea carbekii’ the symbiont of the economically important pest insect Halyomorpha halys, the brown marmorated stink bug, and evaluate its potential for elucidating host distribution, an analysis which has been successfully used with other intracellular symbionts.

Unfortunately, this puts modern students of science at somewhat of a disadvantage compared to our predecessors when it comes to scientific names. In the insectarium world, Latin and Greek names are used for the arthropods that we display, but for most young entomologists, these words are just a challenge to pronounce and lack meaning. Working with arthropods, we all know that Entomology is the study of these animals. Sounding similar but totally different, Etymology is the study of the origin of words, and the history of word meaning.

Se analizan las posibilidades que ofrece la producción de proteínas de A. domesticus para el consumo humano. También se presentan experiencias en el mantenimiento de reproducción de grillos, que incluye las condiciones y cuidados del grillo. Se evalúa la información publicada reciente en relación al uso, valor proteico y ventajas del consumo humano de A. domesticus.     Chapter 3. Vanishing Riparian Mesquite Bosques: Their Uniqueness and Recovery Potential R. Roy Johnson, Tanner S. Carothers, and Steven W. Carothers Introduction The “mesquite bosque” (Spanish for “forest” or “woodland”), one of the most unique and productive southwestern riparian habitat types, was once far more abundant than it is today. Twenty-five years ago, Stromberg (1993), with a focus on Arizona, provided an excellent review on the ecology, decline, existing threats, and potential for recovery of these mesquite forests. By 1993 the iconic mesquite bosque riparian habitat was in serious decline, due primarily to anthropogenic activities. Stromberg (1993) observed that previous attempts at habitat restoration were of limited success and indicated that much of the significant bosque habitat loss was largely the result of human-induced changes in the biotic and abiotic conditions and processes in river floodplains specifically required by species of mesquite (Prosopis spp.). In this chapter, we update elements of Stromberg’s 1993 review and provide a classification between two types of bosques based on distinct vegetation associations along a relatively dry to wet riparian continuum. We also discuss the uniqueness of mesquite bosques as wildlife habitat and chronicle the loss of some of the more distinctive of these forests in Arizona as well as conditions that led to their disappearance. Lastly, we suggest opportunities for a timely approach to mesquite habitat restoration that will likely arise as a result of recent litigation resolution between the Department of Agriculture and the Center for Biological Diversity and the Maricopa Audubon Society. Ont. 145: 61–76 The following seven orthopteroid taxa are recorded from Canada for the first time: Anaxipha species 1, Cyrtoxipha gundlachi Saussure, Chloroscirtus forcipatus (Brunner von Wattenwyl), Neoconocephalus exiliscanorus (Davis), Camptonotus carolinensis (Gerstaeker), Scapteriscus borellii Linnaeus, and Melanoplus punctulatus griseus (Thomas). One further species, Neoconocephalus retusus (Scudder) is recorded from Ontario for the first time. An updated checklist of the orthopteroids of Ontario is provided, along with notes on changes in nomenclature. Published December 2014 Introduction Vickery and Kevan (1985) and Vickery and Scudder (1987) reviewed and listed the orthopteroid species known from Canada and Alaska, including 141 species from Ontario. A further 15 species have been recorded from Ontario since then (Skevington et al. 2001, Marshall et al. 2004, Paiero et al. 2010) and we here add another eight species or subspecies, of which seven are also new Canadian records.     Clinical Approach to Ferret Lymphoma La’Toya Latney, DVM University of Pennsylvania Philadelphia, PA Lymphoma connotes a solid-tissue tumor composed of neoplastic lymphocytes in visceral organs, skin, or lymph nodes throughout the body (Antinoff). To date, lymphoma is the most common malignant neoplasia reported in the domestic ferret at 10-15% of all neoplastic presentations in the US and Europe, and lymphoma is the third most common neoplasia of ferrets, behind adrenocortical neoplasia and insulinoma. It is documented as a spontaneous neoplasia (Mayer, Quesenberry), however there have been reports of horizontal transmission via cell and cell-free inoculation (Erdman), which suggests that there may a viral etiology, however an agent has never been reported. There is one report of Helicobacter mustelidae-associated (MALT) gastric B-cell lymphoma (Erdman), and this syndrome appears to mimic gastric B cell lymphoma caused H.pylori in humans. Ferret lymphoma can occur across a number of age groups and has no specific sex predilections. In the early literature describing the disease, ferret lymphoma was classified by age of onset and assigned distinct prognosis, i.e. the aggressive and quickly fatal juvenile onset lymphoma form and the adult chronic onset form. This generalized classification scheme has been since retracted due to new clinical reports that reveal there is no specific age and cell-type trend. Most resources characterize lymphoma by cell line, i.e. large cell, lymphoblastic lymphoma (T cell) or small cell, lymphocytic lymphoma (B cell). Finally, there are several studies that report disease based on location, which include but are not limited to multicentric lymphoma (Ferreira), cutaneous lymphoma (Xi, Rosenbaum), malignant B-cell lymphoma with Mott cell differentiation (Gupta), polyostotic lymphoma (Long), epitheliotropic gastrointestinal T-cell lymphoma (Sinclair), focal thoracolumbar spinal cord lymphoma (Ingrao), myelo-osteolytic plasmacytic lymphoma in the femur (Eshar), and gastrointestinal lymphoma (Lee).
