Liturgy & Planning Guide November 29: First Sunday of Advent November 29, 2020 to February This is Year B in the liturgical calendar which means 14, 2021 we will hear the Gospel of Mark proclaimed semi-continuously through 2021. Mark’s Gospel is the oldest, composed perhaps First Sunday of Advent through before 70 A.D. and the threat of persecution loomed over 6th Sunday in Ordinary Time Christians. This Gospel consists of two parts: the first eight Cycle B/Year I chapters are dedicated to Jesus’ ministry in and around Galilee.

Rejoice!” and the Fourth Sunday’s liturgy proclaims that we now prepare for “The Incarnation of the Word.” (pp.95-97). This volume has been revised and updated by liturgical scholar Father Paul Turner and is even more of a jewel to our ministry. As we complete this year of global suffering and death, let the words of Isaiah from the late M. D. December 8: Immaculate Conception of Mary Today we celebrate the Feast of the Immaculate Conception. It is Roman Catholic dogma (belief) that Mary, the Mother of Jesus, was preserved from original sin – the sin of Adam – from the time of her conception. An easy way to remember that we celebrate her conception at this feast, and not Jesus’ conception is quite simple: it takes about nine months to have a baby. This is December and Jesus is born the month. Mary’s birth is celebrated on September 8. The Catholic bishops of the United States at the First Council of Baltimore in 1846 chose Mary under this title to be patroness of the land. By pontifical decree the Immaculate Conception is also designated patroness of Argentina, Brazil, Korea, Nicaragua, Paraguay, Philippines, Spain, Uruguay, Italy, and Portugal. Many are familiar with the story of the apparition at Lourdes, France. There is a connection with the Immaculate Conception and Bernadette Soubirous – Bernadette of Lourdes. When Bernadette asked “the Lady” of the apparitions to identify th herself on March 25 , 1858, Mary replied, “I am the Immaculate Conception.” Various images of the Immaculate Conception in art taken from Revelation 12:1 include Mary with twelve stars around her head; wearing a white tunic and mantle; a crescent moon under her feet; the sun surrounding her. The Magnificat and Benedictus are both New Testament canticles which are part of morning and evening prayer in the liturgy. December 20: Fourth Sunday of Advent Today, in the civil calendar, is International Human Solidarity Day. One of the great signs of solidarity in our liturgies is congregational singing. Not only are we united by the rhythm of the texts, but we sing on the same pitch (well, mostly), and even breathe together. COVID-19 has restricted our community song severely and has wreaked havoc with musicians. Pray for musicians everywhere. Tomorrow is the shortest day of the year. Darkness fades and the light lengthens as we approach the birth of the Son! Take the pulse of your community when preparing for liturgy. This Advent is unusual and a challenge to prepare in advance. Look beyond the usual music in the Advent/Christmas section of your missals and hymnals. For a post-COVID-19 suggestion that is not in the initial suggestions, consider Bernadette Farrell’s “All That Is Hidden” (OCP). The refrain resonates with the solstice: “…All that is dark now, will be revealed…” Here is a prayer from the Book of Blessings, or Chapter 29 for you and yours (it comes from the household blessing of a Christmas tree, but summarizes our season: Lord our God, we praise you for the light of creation: the sun, the moon, and the stars of the night. We praise you for the light of Israel: the Law, the prophets, and the wisdom of the Scriptures. We praise you for Jesus Christ, your Son: he is Emmanuel, God-with-us, the Prince of Peace, who fills us with the wonder of your love. -Elaine Rendler-McQueeney (OCP – Today’s Liturgy)

Mass at Dawn Mass during the Day The Mass at Dawn is the most overlooked of the four There is a pattern to the time and messages of our Masses for Christmas. And that’s too bad. December 27: The Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph It seems like only yesterday was Christmas! Oh, that’s right! It WAS only yesterday when you’re scheduled for the Vigil Mass! In today’s Gospel story Mary and Joseph bring the child to the temple (as was the tradition of the ancestors) where a holy man, Simeon, declares Jesus the promised one. Simeon proclaims the Nunc Dimittis. There are several settings of the “Nunc Dimittis/ Canticle of Simeon” in the hymnals/missals. [Check your indices!] Why is it important to add a setting of this canticle to your repertoire? Well, it is used daily in the ; it can be used at funerals anytime; and it will be used today and for the Feast of the Presentation of the Lord (also known as Candlemas), and the Purification of Mary on Tuesday, February 2, this year. Today’s Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary and Joseph displaces the usual December 26 Feast of St. Stephan – the first martyr. Many remember that Saint Stephen was the first martyr, but did you know he was a Christian deacon as well? Indeed, he is the patron of deacons and (wait for it) stonemasons.

In compelling companion for us on our journey through the year fact, they ARE the message because they are outsiders. Jesus ahead? Christ is the Savior of all peoples and nations. Not just the peoples and nations we prefer.

Christmas carols are an important way of extending the

Christmas season, but perhaps not the only way. Choose perhaps

a Communion processional about gifts such as Dan Schutte’s

“God’s Holy Gifts,” Curtis Stephan’s “Amen! Let It Be Done”,

or Dean’s “Holy Gifts”. Another important symbol for today is light. Not in the title, but pertinent, is verse 3 of “The First Nowell,” which mentions the wise men from the East; and “Sing We Now of Christmas,” dedicates verses 4 and 5 to the Magi. There’s quite a variety of choices in the music suggestions [below]. Life as we knew it has changed – particularly for those who have lost loved ones. Is there a place to commemorate those who have been taken from us this past year? Designate a space where pictures of loved ones lost could be placed perhaps near the baptismal font to remain throughout the season. It’s not too late. Suggest that people bring them for the Baptism of the Lord next week. – Elaine Rendler-McQueeney, Today’s Liturgy (OCP) Entrance Antiphon: (Vigil) Arise, Jerusalem, and look to the East and see your children gathered from the rising to the setting of the sun. What Did Jesus Look Like? – excerpt from AIM Winter 2020 – Pastor Al …We are living in a time of increased awareness of the diversity of our world, and the limitations of our history. Regarding skin color and appearances, for centuries we have been blind to the effect the [prevailing] culture has had on the way this Jewish Middle Eastern family has been portrayed. Fortunately, we are growing aware of this. Good for you for realizing the historical implausibility of these depictions [fair skin and blue eyes]. Let’s join together in praying we continue to find better, more accurate, and more inclusive ways to depict the holy people of this holy season.

Focusing the Responsorial Psalm The antiphon to today’s responsorial psalm mirrors the response of the young Samuel to the Lord’s call (first reading). The psalm is a song of thanksgiving from one who has been rescued by God and now sings the “new song” of hope and mercy of God that he has experienced. The psalmist stands before the Lord ready to speak his word. For the psalmist, the perfect offering for God’s blessing is not ritual sacrifice but obedience [holy listening] and trust.

January 24: 3rd Sunday in Ordinary Time To You, O God, I Lift Up My Soul - B. Hurd If last week’s Gospel story and this week’s sound Vamos a la Casa del Señor (S) familiar, it’s because they are. According to commentaries on Mark’s Gospel, Psalm 95:1-2, 6-7, 7-9 it’s not what Jesus said, but how he said it – with authority! If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts. Jesus’ authority is a distinctive feature of Mark’s Gospel. 1 Corinthians 7:32-35 Paul encouraged the Corinthians, in view of the What a morning!
