Oral History Collection on the Performing Arts in America Southern Methodist University The Southern Methodist University Oral History Program was begun in 1972 and is part of the University’s DeGolyer Institute for American Studies. The goal is to gather primary source material for future writers and cultural historians on all branches of the performing arts- opera, ballet, the concert stage, theatre, films, radio, television, burlesque, vaudeville, popular music, jazz, the circus, and miscellaneous amateur and local productions. The Collection is particularly strong, however, in the areas of motion pictures and popular music and includes interviews with celebrated performers as well as a wide variety of behind-the-scenes personnel, several of whom are now deceased. Most interviews are biographical in nature although some are focused exclusively on a single topic of historical importance. The Program aims at balancing national developments with examples from local history. Interviews with members of the Dallas Little Theatre, therefore, serve to illustrate a nation-wide movement, while film exhibition across the country is exemplified by the Interstate Theater Circuit of Texas. The interviews have all been conducted by trained historians, who attempt to view artistic achievements against a broad social and cultural backdrop. Many of the persons interviewed, because of educational limitations or various extenuating circumstances, would never write down their experiences, and therefore valuable information on our nation’s cultural heritage would be lost if it were not for the S.M.U. Oral History Program. Interviewees are selected on the strength of (1) their contribution to the performing arts in America, (2) their unique position in a given art form, and (3) availability. -

Hayes 2009 PREFACE When the University of Wyoming began collecting the papers of national entertainment figures in the 1970s, it was one of only a handful of repositories actively engaged in the field. Business and industry, science, family history, even print literature were all recognized as legitimate fields of study while prejudice remained against mere entertainment as a source of scholarship. There are two arguments to be made against this narrow vision. In the first place, entertainment is very much an industry. It employs thousands. It requires vast capital expenditure, and it lives or dies on profit. In the second place, popular culture is more universal than any other field. Each individual’s experience is unique, but one common thread running throughout humanity is the desire to be taken out of ourselves, to share with our neighbors some story of humor or adventure. This is the basis for entertainment. The Entertainment Industry collections at the American Heritage Center focus on the twentieth century. During the twentieth century, entertainment in the United States changed radically due to advances in communications technology. The development of radio made it possible for the first time for people on both coasts to listen to a performance simultaneously. The delivery of entertainment thus became immensely cheaper and, at the same time, the fame of individual performers grew. -

INTRODUCTION OR A JITTERY RADIO INDUSTRY concerned about the future of American Fbroadcasting in the early months after America's entry into World War II, William B. Lewis came as a godsend.1 As head of the Domestic Radio Division of the Office of Facts and Figures (OFF), and later the Office of War Information (OWI, June 1942), Lewis, a former vice president ofCBS, reassured the industry that the commercial structure of American radio would remain unchanged. In his first meeting with net work executives and radio sponsors and advertisers in January 1942, he outlined his pragmatic approach to radio's war effort. As he argued, "ra dio is valuable only because of the enormous audiences it has created." During wartime, his government office planned to use radio's popularity without unnecessarily disrupting radio structure and schedule: "Let's not forget that radio is primarily an entertainment medium, and must con tinue to be if it is .. -

Weaver ii ABSTRACT Radio Plays are a form of classic American Theatre that relies on dialogue, music and sound effects to audibly enhance a story with no visual component. While these types of plays are no longer at the forefront of modern day theatrical experience, I believe these popular plays of the mid-20th century are derivative of an oral storytelling tradition and significant to American entertainment culture. This thesis will discuss the aspects of radio plays that viscerally captured audiences. While this concept can be applied to many popular America radio shows of the time, this thesis will focus on one form ; the black radio play or black situation comedy series. I will deconstruct different genres of radio shows and identify the elements of sound effect, imagery and patterns in speech. This thesis will apply these elements to programs about white family life, (Fibber McGee and The Lone Ranger ) as well as family comedies about black cultural life, (Amos n' Andy, The Martin Lone and Beulah Show and Aunt Jemima). In addition, it will also reveal the business of employing white male actors to voice the parts of black characters and the physical mechanics used to create a “black sound”. -

“Fibber McGee and Molly” (March 4, 1940) Added to the National Registry: 2007 Essay by Cary O’Dell The Jordans in character Artist’s rendering Jim and Marian Jordan One of radio’s most famous, popular and long-lasting comedies, “Fibber McGee and Molly” was the creation of married performers and former vaudevillians Jim and Marian Jordan and the talented gag writer Don Quinn. Quinn was a former newspaper cartoonist who had switched to radio after the Depression dealt a temporary blow to the newspaper industry. After serving an extended apprenticeship in Chicago-area radio (the trio all hailed from Illinois), and performing in various local programs, including the transitional comedy “Smackout” (based around a general store that was always “smack out” of everything but tall tales), “Fibber McGee and Molly” debuted over NBC Blue on April 16, 1935. It switched to NBC Red in 1939. “Fibber” told the story of a middle-aged, middle-class, married--though curiously childless—couple. Fibber McGee (whose first name reflected his tendency to stretch the truth) and his patient wife Molly who lived simply in a small town in a house located at 79 Wistful Vista and were regularly visited by a wide assortment of friends and neighbors who dropped by to chat. In many ways, the lead and title character of “Fibber McGee” was the first of what would become a popular, enduring sitcom archetype. An overconfident, long-winded bumbler, Fibber laid the groundwork for generations of later hapless husbands on radio and the small screen from “The Life of Riley” to “The Honeymooners” to “Home Improvement.” Similarly, his long-suffering, epically-patient wife, Molly, who has been described as “faithful, strong, a woman of rugged pioneer stock,” helped pave the way for all the latter-day Alice Kramdens, women who inevitably end up having to save the world from their husbands and their husbands from themselves.
