The Bruin JROTC Battalion hosted the 7th Annual Hardin County Raider Cup at Central Hardin Bruin Stadium on 7 September. John, North, and Central Hardin Army JROTC programs fielded two teams each in the 5 event competition. A good crowd turned out for the competition and wit- nessed outstanding teamwork and determination. The Rope Bridge, Tire Haul, Aid & Litter Carry, Cross Country Run, and Water Can Relay were physically and mentally challenging for the Cadets. Central Hardin was presented the Traveling Cup for the 7th straight year having the highest combined team scores. The CPT Charles F. Thomas IV Traveling Cup is presented in memory of FT Knox High School and WKU graduate/ROTC Alumni who was fatally wounded in combat while serving in Vietnam. Cadets from UL, UK, and WKU Army ROTC programs along with local military recruiters from the US Marine Corps and Kentucky National Guard provided judges for the meet. Bruin Team 1 won the Top Raider Team trophy by placing first in the Tire Haul, Cross Country Run, Water Can Relay and setting a course record in the One-Rope-Bridge with a time of 1 minute and 51 seconds. Bruin Team 2 placed 1st in the Aid & Litter Carry and placed second overall. Central Hardin competes next at Allen County – Scottsville High School on 14 October followed by the Louisville Southern High meet on 21 October.

Freshman Evan Jones comes back strong after ordeal 5 years ago

I play soccer right now, so I cherish every moment I have since you don’t know what could happen.” Jones defeated cancer, and he didn’t stop after that. He gained the respect from his teammates and coaches, and is now given the opportunity to play with older and more talented players. Support from his parents and friends guided him throughout an epic struggle. He is a walking symbol of how cancer can kill cells, but it cannot kill character.
