Art and Power in Putin's Russia
RUSSIA Art and Power in Putin’s Russia BY SASHA PEVAK The separation between art and power in Russia’s recent history has never been clear-cut. Soon after the fall of the USSR, contemporary art, namely actionism in the 90s, openly criticized society and entered the political sphere. This trend continued after Vladimir Putin’s election in 2000. Russian identity politics in the 2000s were based on four pillars: state nationalism with the Putin’s “power vertical”, the vision of Russia as a nation-state, Orthodox religion, and the myth of the Unique Russian Path, reinforced by the notion of “sovereign democracy” and the idea of the omnipresence of a fifth column inside the country 1. The will to consolidate society around these values provoked, according to political scientist Lena Jonson, tensions between the State and culture, especially as far as religious issues were concerned. These issues were the cause of the trials against the exhibitions “Attention! Religion” (2003) and “Forbidden Art – 2006” (2007), shown in Moscow at the Andrei Sakharov Museum and Public Centre. The latter staged temporary events and activities based on the defence of Human Rights. For part of the national opinion, the Centre symbolized democracy in Russia, whereas for others it represented an antipatriotic element, all the more so because it was financed by foreign foundations. In 2014, the Department of Justice catalogued it as a “foreign agent,” on the pretext that it carried out political actions with American subsidies 2. In 2003, the exhibition “Caution, Religion!”, organized by Aroutioun Zouloumian, was vandalized by religious activists several days after the opening 3. -

Kuklina National Research Tomsk State University 36 Lenina Str., Tomsk, 634050, Russia Received 21.04.2016, received in revised form 09.06.2016, accepted 19.08.2016 The authors deal with the problem of the development of contemporary art in the regions of Russia in the context of global projects and institutions, establishing ‘the rules of the game’ in the field of contemporary culture. The article considers the experience of working with contemporary art within the framework of the National Centre for Contemporary Arts and other organizations. So-called Siberian ironic conceptualism is considered as an example of original regional aesthetics. The article concludes that the alleged problem can be solved in the framework of specific exhibition projects and curatorial decisions, which aim at finding different forms of meetings (dialogue, conflict, addition) of a regional identity and global trends. Borisova Institute of Geography, Russian Academy of Sciences, Staromonetny per., Moscow 119017, Russia ABSTRACT Hydromorphological and hydroclimatic methods were used to reconstruct the former surface runoff from the East European part of the Black Sea drainage basin. Data on the shape and dynamics of the last Fennoscandian ice sheet were used to cal- culate meltwater supply to the headwaters of the Dnieper River. The channel width and meander wavelength of well-preserved fragments of large paleochannels were measured at 51 locations in the Dnieper and Don River basins (East European Plain), which allowed reconstruction of the former surface runoff of the ancient rivers, as well as the total volume of fl ow into the Black Sea, using transform functions. Studies of the composition of fossil fl oras derived from radiocarbon-dated sediments of vari- ous origins and ages make it possible to locate their modern region analogues. These analogues provide climatic and hydrological indexes for the Late Pleniglacial and Late Glacial landscapes. Morphological, geological, geochronological, and palyno- logical studies show that the landscape, climatic, and hydrologic history of the region included: -

Mitja Velikonja Umestitev performansa v prostor in primer Pussy Riot v Rusiji Magistrsko delo Ljubljana, 2014 V prvi vrsti se zahvaljujem red. prof. dr. Umestitev performansa v prostor in primer Pussy Riot v Rusiji Performans je subverzivna umetnost, ki odprto kritizira družbeno-politična dogajanja in postavlja pod vprašaj dominantne diskurze – od prevladujočih vrednot in norm do splošno sprejetih definicij, dognanj in praks. V magistrskem delu me je zanimalo, ali je izbira prostora za izvedbo performansa ključna za to, kako bo družbeno kritično sporočilo aktivista razumljeno v širši javnosti ali ne. Da bi odgovorila na raziskovalno vprašanje, sem najprej naredila tekstualno analizo sekundarnih virov, s katero sem dobila splošen okvir za nadaljnje razmišljanje, nato pa sem izvedla študijo primera. Analizirala sem performans skupine Pussy Riot, do katerega je prišlo v moskovski katedrali Kristusa Odrešenika. Z analizo sem želela izvedeti, kako je na umestitev Punk molitve v prostor gledala ruska javnost in kako so nanjo reagirali ljudje po svetu. Ugotovila sem, da sta bili ruska in svetovna javnost enotnega mnenja o neprimernosti sakralnega prostora za izvedbo umetniške akcije, vendar je bilo v Rusiji zaznati večje nerazumevanje motivov, ki so vodili skupino. -

But it would be unfair to brand this Brooklyn quartet as a group of savvy counterfeiters: their music — a dense web of gripping and at times slightly psychedelic sonic ideas — is a purely original invention. Grizzly Bear’s follow-up Yellow House (ranked among the top albums of 2006 by The New York Times and Pitchfork) secured their spot in the top echelons of alternative rock, while later efforts, including this year’s Painted Ruins, only reinforced their status. But as we’ll all see on a warm summer night this August, this bear’s natural habitat is the stage.
