Brown, Advisor Between 1984 and 1991, heavy metal became one of the most publicly popular and commercially successful rock music subgenres. The focus of this dissertation is to explore the following research questions: How did the subculture of heavy metal music between 1984 and 1991 evolve and what meanings can be derived from this ongoing process? How did the contextual circumstances surrounding heavy metal music during this period impact the performative choices exhibited by artists, and from a position of retrospection, what lasting significance does this particular era of heavy metal merit today? A textual analysis of metal- related materials fostered the development of themes relating to the selective choices made and performances enacted by metal artists. These themes were then considered in terms of gender, sexuality, race, and age constructions as well as the ongoing negotiations of the metal artist within multiple performative realms. Occurring at the juncture of art and commerce, heavy metal music is a purposeful construction. Metal musicians made performative choices for serving particular aims, be it fame, wealth, or art. These same individuals worked within a greater system of influence. Metal bands were the contracted employees of record labels whose own corporate aims needed to be recognized.

The Salt Lake City Arts Council is pleased to announce the 2013 Twilight Concert Series, now in its 26th season, returning to Pioneer Park with another tremendous Twilight Concert Series lineup. The series will run July 18 through September 5 every Thursday evening, with special back-to-back shows scheduled for Wednesday, August 7 and Thursday, Oelerich & Somsen Exhibition August 8. Featured performing artists include Belle & Sebastian, Blitzen Trapper, Public Art Program The Flaming Lips, The National, Sharon Van Etten, Grizzly Bear, Youth Lagoon, Erykah Badu, Kid Cudi, Empire of the Sun, and MGMT. Twilight concerts are a Wheatley & Ashcraft Exhibition longtime staple of Salt Lake City‘s downtown landscape, recognized for inviting Brown Bag Concert Series some of today‘s most impressive names in music to perform on summer nights, when the air is slightly cooler and where the community can come together under New Visual Arts Season a canopy of stars. City Arts Grants Deadlines For 2013, tickets are still just $5 for each concert and $35 for season tickets. Nicholas Lewis The thing is, I’m not the guy who goes out and does the interviews or who takes the photographs. I’m not the one who designs each and every page nor am I even the Editorial assistant one who proof reads them. No, I’m the (boring) guy who sits behind his desk day-in Sarah Schug day-out, planning, story-boarding and commissioning each story, shoot and feature for others to carry-out. Grizzly Bear If there’s one band on the US indie scene today that can blaze new trails in American folk music while remaining faithful to the lessons of the Beach Boys, and that can be as catchy as they are challenging, blending jazz and art rock with pop, then that band is, without a doubt, Grizzly Bear. But it would be unfair to brand this Brooklyn quartet as a group of savvy counterfeiters: their music — a dense web of gripping and at times slightly psychedelic sonic ideas — is a purely original invention. It’s also one that’s garnered rave reviews from audiences and critics alike since their debut Horn of Plenty (2004). Grizzly Bear’s follow-up Yellow House (ranked among the top albums of 2006 by The New York Times and Pitchfork) secured their spot in the top echelons of alternative rock, while later efforts, including this year’s Painted Ruins, only reinforced their status. But as we’ll all see on a warm summer night this August, this bear’s natural habitat is the stage. John Maus His music has been described as a mash-up of punk, catchy soundtracks to ‘80s blockbusters, the unremitting poppiness of Moroder, and the spiritual qualities of Medieval and Baroque music.

Zusammen sind sie The Amplifetes – und auch das dürfte den wenigsten Menschen was sagen. Als Songwriter und Produzenten haben sie allerdings schon für Künstler wie Madonna, Kylie Minogue oder Britney Spears gearbeitet – oder aber für irgendwelche Gel-Werbespots. Allzu wählerisch sind sie nicht und ihre Musik scheint vor allem in Verbindung mit eingeführten Marken zu funktionieren. Ob The Amplifetes selbst zu einer solchen wird, darf auch nach dem Hören des zweiten Albums Where is the light bezweifelt werden. Der Bandname, der »nach Rock klingt, aber auch die Süße von 60s Girl Bands hat«, ist schon mal eher fad (und wäre Les Amplifetes nicht zielführender?) Aber das muss ja nicht schaden. Was erwartet den Hörer? Breitbeiniger Pop, der sich Mainstream-Quellen der 70er und 80er bedient und vor allem mithilfe von Computern und Analog-Synthies den Weg zum Mitstampfen bereitet. Anklänge von Elo über Bowie bis zum Bubblegum-Poppunk werden geschickt zu tanzbaren Elektro-Pop- Krachern verwurstet. Eine wirklich eigene Handschrift bleibt dabei aber eher aus. Spaß machts trotzdem. Höhepunkt ist der an Phoenix erinnernde Song You/ me/evolution. Neuer Versuch: Fred Nicolaus anybody? Der war zusammen mit Daniel Rossen als Department of Eagles nicht ohne Erfolg, bevor Rossen und der gemeinsame Freund Chris Taylor als Grizzly Bear richtig durchstarteten. Nachdem Rossen solo schon beachtenswert vorlegte, folgt nun Fred als Golden Suits. Wie Rossen, der eher folkrockig angehauchte Singer-Songwriter-Ware veredelte, nimmt auch Nicolaus im Vergleich zu Grizzly Bear einen etwas direkteren Weg, der eher an Department of Eagles anschließt.
