At that stage I had no first-hand knowledge of Clare’s part of the country, so my first task was to discover how many of the flowers on my list could still be found there. Chris Gardiner, Natural England’s Senior Reserves Manager in the area, and Jean Stowe, a committee member of the Langdyke Trust, both responded to my enquiries with invaluable species lists, and Jean also with her husband Iain’s and her own skilful photographs; David Broughton, a Vice-county Recorder for the Botanical Society of Britain and Ireland, supplied me with up- to-the-minute information about the rarer flowers; Sheila Wells went out on my behalf and found some of them growing just where Clare said they did; from the start the late Peter Moyse shared with me his knowledge and appreciation of the landscape, trees and flowers of Clare’s countryside. Jean Stowe also put me in touch with the late Bridget Smith, whose combination of a lifelong pleasure in our native flora with a deep appreciation of Clare’s poetry has been an inspiration to me ever since. Its lightly-worn scholarship and mischievous humour perfectly express her theme that the best of poetry is a kind of science, truth forged out of a marriage between incisive observation and imaginative insight. John Clare is in many ways the hero of the book, and Molly quotes the poignant self- description he had inscribed on the back of his portrait – ‘Bard of the wild flowers / Rain-washed and wind-shaken’.

Equisetopsida Horsetails date from the Devonian period (416 to 359 million years ago) in earth’s history where they were trees up to 110 feet in height and helped to form the coal deposits of the Carboniferous period. Only one genus has survived to modern times (Equisetum). Horsetails Horsetails (Equisetum) have jointed stems with whorls of thin narrow leaves. In the sporophyte stage, they have a sterile and fertile form. Th ey produce only one type of spore. While the gametophytes produced from the spores appear to be plentiful, the successful reproduction of the sporophyte form is low with most Horsetails reproducing vegetatively. Lycopodiopsida Lycopodiopsida includes the clubmosses (Dendrolycopodium, Diphasiastrum, Lycopodiella, Lycopodium , Spinulum) and Fir-mosses (Huperzia) Clubmosses Clubmosses are evergreen plants that produce only microspores that develop into a gametophyte capable of producing both sperm and egg cells. Club-mosses can produce the spores either in leaf axils or at the top of their stems. Th e spore capsules form in a cone-like structures (strobili) at the top of the plants.

    The Order of Authors: Degrees of ‘Popularity’ and ‘Fame’ in John Clare’s Writing ADAM WHITE Abstract: This essay analyses Clare’s essay ‘Popularity in Authorship’, arguing that the work can be seen as a central statement in Clare’s recurrent concern with poetic fame and authorial reputation. By connecting ‘Popularity in Authorship’ with Clare’s sonnets on his Romantic contemporaries (Robert Bloomfield and Lord Byron), the essay contends that Clare’s complex understanding of ‘popular’ and ‘common’ notions of fame helps to bring into focus a distinctive contribution to debates about how authors were received by different audiences in the period. Contributor: Adam White currently teaches in English and American Studies at the University of Manchester, where he obtained his PhD. He has published a number of essays on Romantic poetry, most recently on Robert Burns and John Clare. In 2012 his essay on Leigh Hunt, John Keats, John Hamilton Reynolds, and John Clare was awarded second prize in the Keats-Shelley Memorial Association competition. For The Literary Encyclopedia he has written entries on Lord Byron, John Keats, the Brontë sisters, Charles Dickens, and Thomas Hardy. In a letter of 29 August 1828 to Thomas Pringle,1 John Clare states that ‘I would sooner be the Author of Tam o shanter then of the Iliad & Odyssey of Homer’ (Storey 437).2 It is intriguing that Clare should voice a bold preference for being the author of ‘Tam o’ Shanter’ given that earlier in his career he had in fact been called ‘a second [Robert] Burns’ (Storey 105) after the instant success of his first volume, Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery (1820).

In this research, Iranian species of 20 sections of the genus Silene L. have been anatomically studied for the first time. Some of the most important anatomical characters of leaf in this genus are listed here: general shape of leaves in transverse section, type of stomata cells, form of trichome, type of mesophyll (dorsiventral or isobilateral), presence or absence and type of collenchyma, thickness of sclerenchyma, existence or lack of water-storage, shape of vascular bundles, number of parenchyma layers in midrib, form and number of spongy and palisade parenchyma, presence or absence of parenchyma bundle sheath, number of vascular bundles in midrib. Based on our results we are able to identify and classify sections of this genus (tables 2, 3). In addition, we selected the most important characters related to midrib and lamina. All of these results confirm anatomical characters have taxonomic value for separating sections in the genus Silene.     Afterword What Are Poets For? In the last issue of Windfall we called for a “new realistic romanticism, in which the human relation to nature is once again called to account, as well as exalted.” What do we mean by this apparent contradiction in terms, a “realistic romanticism,” and how would it work in writing poetry today? In poetry the term “Romanticism” recalls the movement that took hold at the beginning of the nineteenth century, including German poets such as Goethe, Novalis, and Hölderlin, and English poets such as Blake, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Byron, Shelley, Keats, and Clare. These poets in general were responding to the rise of the industrial age in Europe, the rationalistic, dehumanizing era characterized by Blake’s “dark Satanic mills.” The Romantic poets asserted the primacy of emotion and a redemptive relation to nature. In terms of writing about nature, Hölderlin produced numerous poems about the rivers of Germany, Keats gave us his “Ode to a Nightingale” and “Ode to Autumn,” and Shelley wrote “Ode to the West Wind.” Wordsworth engaged nature on many levels, most memorably in “Lines Written above Tintern Abbey.” Among Romantic poets, the one whose work dealt most directly with nature was John Clare (1793-1864). Other poets were inclined to idealize nature, and their treatment of it in poetry was often symbolic and literary— Keats’ nightingale was a creature of the imagination, Greek myth, and poetic tradition, not of observation: Thou wast not born for death, immortal Bird! The maps treat 172 taxa (species, subspecies, varieties, and hybrids, but not forms) based primarily on specimens in the major herbaria of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut, with most data derived from the holdings of the New England Botanical Club Herbarium (NEBC). Brief synonymy (to account for names used in standard manuals and floras for the area and on herbarium specimens), habitat, chromosome information, and common names are also provided. This project encompasses all vascular plants (lycophytes, pteridophytes and spermatophytes) at the rank of species, subspecies, and variety growing independent of cultivation in the six New England states.

THE erect Sigillarire enclosed in the f!andstone overlying coal-group 15 of Section XV, Division 4 of the SOIl.th Joggins section, are perhaps the most remarkable repositories ever dis­ covered of the remains of Paleozoic land animals. As I have shown in discussing their character in my memoirs on the South Joggins Coal FOl'mation,* and my "Acadian Geology," some of these trees became em bedded in sandy deposits, and being rendered hollow by decay of their inner bark and the crumbling of their woody axes, remained for a long time as open holes or pits, gradually filling with vegetable debris and the wash of rains and land floods. They thus became places of habitation for land snails and millepedes, and pit-falls into which the smaller batrachians, prowling for prey among the undergrowth of the coal forest, fell and were unable to extri­ cate themselves. In this way the successive layers of deposit became stored with skeletons of batrachians which they have retained in an admirable st.ate of preservation. Onlrone sandstone at the Joggins is known to contain these reptiliferous trees, though erect Sigillarire are known at. more than sixty different levels, and many of these erect stumps have been broken up in the hope of making such discoveries.
