Blanda la reazione del gruppo e guadagnano rapidamente terreno i battistrada: dopo 2 km di corsa, il margine è di 30”; km 4: 1’32”; km 6: 2’26”; km 8: 3’45”; km 16: 6’42”; a condurre in gruppo, atleti Giant-Alpecin; km 20: 7’10”; km 25: 6’43”; km 41: 7’26”. Media della prima ora di gara: 42,300 km/h. Km 45: 8’34”; km 55: 9’23”; km 68: 8’45”; km 74: 8’32”; km 81: 8’23”. Media dopo due ore: 41,100 km/h. Pure atleti Etixx-Quick Step a fare l’andatura in gruppo: al km 98 il vantaggio dei tre battistrada è di 7’01”; km 108: 5’18”; km 114: 5’12”; km 119: 4’30”. Media dopo tre ore: 40,030 km/h. Poco prima dei 3 km al primo passaggio sul traguardo (circuito di 8,6 km da ripetere due volte), Berlato allunga da solo, presto ripresi dal gruppo Fraile e Tjallingii. Al primo transito sulla linea d’arrivo: il gruppo insegue Berlato con un ritardo di 55”. Perde terreno il battistrada, raggiunto infine prima del secondo transito: gruppo compatto. Velocità molto sostenuta, volata di gruppo. ARRIVO (Nijmegen – km 190) Vittoria di Kittel davanti a Demare, Modolo, Hofland, Ruffoni, Porsev, Ewan, Sbaragli e via via gli altri. Trois coureurs, Fraile, Berlato et Tjallingii, attaquent juste après le départ. La réaction du peloton est faible ; les échappés creusent rapidement l’écart. Au km 2, ils ont 30” d’avance ; au km 4 : 1’32” ; au km 6 : 2’26” ; au km 8 : 3’45” ; au km 16 : 6’42”. Les hommes de la Giant-Alpecin emmènent le peloton. Au km 20, l’écart est de 7’10” ; au km 25 : 6’43” ; au km 41 : 7’26”. Moyenne après une heure de course : 42,300 km/h. Au km 45, le peloton accuse un retard de 8’34” ; au km 55 : 9’23” ; au km 68 : 8’45” ; au km 74 : 8’32”. Moyenne après deux heures : 41,100 km/h. Au km 140 (-50 km de l’arrivée), les échappés ont 3’12” d’avance. Sprint intermédiaire [km 146,8 – Berg en Dal] Tjallingii remporte le sprint intermédiaire devançant Berlato et Fraile ; Nizzolo, Viviani, Trentin, Tcatevitch, Arndt et les autres sont pointés à 3’08”. Grand Prix de la Montagne [km 155,3 – Berg en Dal – m 95 (4ème cat.)] Fraile remporte le GPM devançant Tjallingii et Berlato ; le peloton est pointé à 2’30”. Le peloton réduit la distance : au panneau indiquant 30 km de l’arrivée, les échappés n’ont que 1’25” d’avance. Crevaison et rentrée de Nizzolo ; chute au sein du peloton, impliquant – entre autres – Cardoso. Berlato démarre seul, peu avant -3 km du premier passage sur la ligne de l’arrivée (circuit de 8,6 km, à boucler deux fois) ; le peloton reprend Fraile et Tjallingii. Berlato franchit la ligne de l’arrivée pour le premier passage ; le peloton est pointé à 55”. L’homme de tête perd encore du terrain : il est repris avant le deuxième passage ; le peloton se regroupe. L’allure est très vive. Sprint massif. After 2 km of racing, the front riders are 30” up the road; at km 4: 1’32”; at km 6: 2’26”; at km 8: 3’45”; at km 16: 6’42”. Giant-Alpecin riders are leading the peloton. At km 20, the break is 7’10” up the road; at km 25: 6’43”; at km 41: 7’26”. Average speed after one hour of racing: 42.300 km/h. At km 45, the gap has risen to 8’34”; at km 55: 9’23”; at km 68: 8’45”; at km 74: 8’32”. Average speed after two hours of racing: 41.100 km/h. KOM [km 155.3 – Berg en Dal – m 95 (4th cat.)] Fraile clears the climb ahead of Tjallingii and Berlato; the peloton lags 2’30” behind. The bunch gains ground: at the mark indicating 30 km remaining to the finish, the break is 1’25” up the road. Nizzolo suffers a flat and gets back on track. A crash shakes the peloton; Cardoso is involved, among others. Berlato takes a pull just before 3 km remaining to the first passage on the finish line (an 8.6-km circuit, to be covered twice); the peloton catches up with Fraile and Tjallingii. Berlato takes the first passage on the finish line; the peloton lags 55” behind. The breakaway rider keeps on losing ground. The peloton catches up with him and bunches up before the second passage. The pace is breath-taking. The stage ends in a bunch sprint. FINISH (Nijmegen – km 190) Kittel claims the stage ahead of Demare, Modolo, Hofland, Ruffoni, Porsev, Ewan, Sbaragli and – little by little – all the others. RECOMMENDATIONS: 2.1 Cabinet agrees to allocate £40k from Reserves to host Stage 3, including the finish, of the 2014 Tour of Britain Cycling within Monmouthshire on September 9th 2014. 2.2 Cabinet supports the huge opportunity that this event provides. 3. KEY ISSUES: 3.1 The Tour of Britain is a worldwide brand giving Monmouthshire scope to market its offer to many different countries and networks. The race will travel through many areas within Monmouthshire including the Wye Valley and other tourist attractions finishing on the Tumble climb, near Abergavenny. The final route will be finalised by Tour of Britain Technical Team in conjunction with the Council. 3.2 The Tour of Britain is organised in conjunction with Welsh Government, British Cycling and a company called Sweetspot. The huge financial and commercial side of the brand means that for a small investment the County can benefit from worldwide coverage. 3.3 Robust evaluation data is available from previous 3 years events and these demonstrate critical data on event spectators, media coverage pre/post event, worldwide viewing figures and economic benefit. When I started to explore the topic of peloton formations, I was involved in a change programme in an organisation that seemed stuck; weighed down by process, bureaucracy and deference to hierarchy. At the same time, I had joined different communities and online conversations where the possibility and opportunity for doing things differently were being discussed on a daily basis. My interest in road cycling became a lens through which I looked at these alternative practices but also provided a useful metaphor with which I could translate and communicate ideas to colleagues. This is the idea in a nutshell: The world needs responsive organisations. Companies that are agile and adaptive, responding to changes in context and circumstances. In professional cycling, the peloton is fluid. It moves towards its destination with common purpose. Yet roles shift within the peloton as a whole, and within each team, dependent on terrain, conditions and the individual cyclists themselves. Each team will have slightly different objectives on each day of racing. This affects the roles each rider takes on. Sometimes they will lead. On other occasions, they will be in service of their teammates.
