It must be noted , however, that the term "spiritua lity" is no lo nger an exclusively Christian , no r even an exclusively reli gious, term . Not surprisingly, therefore , fe minist spirituality is not necessaril y a C hristi an o r even a religio us pheno meno n. In fact , however, as we shall see, fe minist spirituality whether Christi an or not tends to be deeply re ligious. Consequently, o ur first task is to define spirituality and specify the meaning of C hristi an spirituality so that we can then raise the questi o n of how fe minism is related to spirituality and fin all y how feminist spirituality is related to Chris tian spirituality. -
Emergent Liberal Judaism and Lily Montagu's
EMERGENT LIBERAL JUDAISM AND LILY MONTAGU’S PROTO-FEMINIST PROJECT: EXPLORING THE PRECURSIVE AND CONCEPTUAL LINKS WITH SECOND AND THIRD-WAVE JEWISH FEMINIST THEOLOGIES Luke Devine* Abstract: Lily Montagu was the founder of Liberal Judaism in England. Because of Montagu’s groundbreaking proto-feminist efforts women in Liberal Judaism can become rabbis, be called up to read the Torah, they are equal in divorce law, they can study the sacred texts, they can form a minyan, and can assume communal and religious positions of authority over men. Montagu was an author, theologian, and social worker; she was the driving force behind the development of Liberal Judaism. However, this biographical overview does not match up with the extant historiography that has instead preferred to focus on the male leaders of the Liberal movement to the extent that Montagu’s intellectual and theological contribution has been marginalized and even completely ignored. In this paper we will siècle Anglo-Jewry that would otherwise be forgotten; even more, we will see in Montagu’s essays, monographs, and novels some of the English foundations of contemporary Jewish feminist theology. In the process, the biography and memory of Lily Montagu will be restored to its rightful place. Lily Montagu was the founder of Anglo-Liberal Judaism, but the extant scholarship has not been forthcoming in acknowledging the extent of her role in the expansion of the movement. In fact, Montagu’s part in the formation and development of Liberal Judaism into an established denomination, and her contribution to the intellectual, spiritual, and theological underpinnings of the movement, have been marginalized, downplayed, and even ignored, with analyses of her involvement even bordering on the derogatory. -

Rebecca Short 24 September 2012 Professor Greta Austin The Methodology of Resistance in Contemporary NeoPagan Culture The number of adherents of NeoPaganism is one of the fastest growing, doubling in numbers about every eighteen months. 1 NeoPaganism is a set of several religious traditions and spiritualities that seek to either (1) painstakingly reconstruct the indigenous religions of the Christianized world, especially those of Europe, or (2) reinterpret these religions in the contemporary era to formulate new religious traditions. Reconstructionist NeoPagan traditions include Asatru , a Norse Reconstructionist path, and Hellenismos , a Greek Reconstructionist religion. More contemporary, eclectic, new religious movements include Wicca, a tradition of religious witchcraft born out of the ancient Hermetic school of spirituality and magic practice. Wicca is by far the most popular tradition (or, now, set of traditions) in all of NeoPaganism. This religious tradition was started by a man named Gerald Gardner in 1950s England. -

JULY 2020 ISSUE NO. 384 The Rising Fourth Wave: Feminist Activism on Digital Platforms in India SHRUTI JAIN ABSTRACT Feminist movements have historically lacked inclusivity, often growing within a limited Western upper-class psyche, based on their own challenges and needs. The digital revolution has paved the way for a new iteration of feminism. The digital space can bolster feminist activist movements by encouraging inclusion and improving accessibility in organising collective action. It also helps weave local stories with global narratives to highlight common structural inequalities. At the same time, however, the digital space can also become a breeding ground for sexism and misogyny. This brief attempts to analyse how digitisation can affect women’s movements, especially in emerging economies like India. It does so by viewing contemporary cyberfeminism through postcolonial and postmodern feminist theories. The brief also highlights the strengths and deficits of digital activism. Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between minority religions and American religious pluralism, an ideology which supports religious equality and functions through social norms and legal mechanisms. Examining American religious pluralism’s responses to efforts by nineteenth-century Spiritualists and contemporary Pagans to gain social recognition and political rights produces new insights into the nature of American religious pluralism. I argue that conceiving of American religious pluralism as a project with inherently Protestant Christian investments challenges its ability to support religious equality and exposes the ways in which it actively works to marginalize minority religions due to their inconsistency with the beliefs and practices of Protestant Christianity. The first chapter of this thesis examines how Spiritualism and Neopaganism challenge American religious pluralism’s understanding of what qualifies as a legitimate form of American religion. Chapter two investigates the ways in which Spiritualism and Neopaganism’s privileging of women contributes to their inability to become established modes of American religiosity. The third chapter explores the limitations American religious pluralism places on minority religions’ responses to death. -

Through what the company terms ‘eldership,’ the company has stepped back and placed more and more of their energy helping others, particularly young and emerging artists. Beginning with creating mentoring programs, and evolving into studying, training, and developing alternative leadership methods, the theatre company created a theatre conference like no other. Borrowing heavily from the Open Space Technology principles of Harrison Owen and the influence of Process Work and World Work pioneered by Arnold Mindell, Improbable created the Devoted & Disgruntled conferences. The Devoted & Disgruntled conferences have worked so well for Improbable because they mirror the ways that the company works when creating their devised performances. Like the company’s work, the Devoted & Disgruntled conferences are a collaborative endeavor. There are no invited speakers, the conference agenda is not preplanned, but is developed by those attending during the initial hour of the event in a collaborative process where all of the participants are empowered to take charge of issues and concerns they feel passionate about, opening dialogues, pooling resources and knowledge, and seeking actionable plans and solutions. -

S)/+, .4 J/+, C*%"$(., M$-, K!##,, $'+ C%'+, S*!-&$' Yuxin (Vivian) Wen Introduction In 1993, students in the Independent Study Program of Whitney Museum of American Art in New York staged “Abject Art” as the theme of their annual exhibition.1 The abject, usually referring to the improper and unclean, is a term theorized by the French philosopher and psychoanalyst Julia Kristeva in her work, Powers of Horror: An Essay on Abjection (1982). It signifes a power relationship in which the abject is the Other, being cast out to preserve the order of an established system and the intact identities of the members within the system. Titled “Abject Art: Repulsion and Desire in American Art,” the show gestured towards the affnity between this sense of the abject and the feminine in the frst section of its display titled “The Maternal Body.” The display featured female artists including Mary Kelly (born 1941) and Cindy Sherman (born 1954) and male artists including Marcel Duchamp (1887 – 1968) and Willem de Kooning (1926 – 1997) who relentlessly focused on the female body as their artistic subject matter.
