leadership amid increasing economic and educational globalization, the United States must aggressively pursue the innovative capacity of all of its people (National Mathematics and Science Initiative, Annual Report, 2008: 5).” “Never before has our world been so complex and science [and math] knowledge so critical to making sense of it all. Whether it is comprehending current events, choosing and using technology or making informed decisions about one’s healthcare, science [and math] understanding is key. [It] is also at the heart of the United States’ ability to continue to innovate, lead and create the jobs of the future. All students—from technicians in a hospital to workers in
