181 The South Face of Dhaulagiri Franci Savenc Yugoslav alpinists selected the S face of Dhaulagiri (8167m) as a goal some years ago. A request for permission for spring 1982 was submitted as they returned from Everest in 1979. However, in the spring of 1981 approval was received for the post-monsoon period. Although the expedition to the S face of Lhotse had scarcely been concluded, and another was not planned, it was essential to accept the offer. The expedition leader immediately left on a reconnaissance mission and established 2 possibilities: to the left and right of the funnel-shaped central section of the face. After speeded-up preparations, 6 alpinists left on 3 September 1981 for Nepal. Accompanied by Mr Mihan Khadka as liaison officer, five Nepalese staff and 56 porters they left Pokhara on 12 September. The final section of the approach march was over virgin ground. On 23 September they reached the location of Base Camp (3950m), where the low altitude porters left them. Nevertheless by 26 September Base Camp had·been set up. Following a period of bad weather and research, the only acclimatization tour/climb possible was made to Manapanti (6380m) during 1-3 October. From 7-13 October the lower part of the face was explored, the climbers reaching an altitude of 5300m, fixing 400m of rope (grades IV and V) and pitching a tent at 5150m. 15 act.: Stane Belak, Cene Bercic and Emil Tratnik started upon the face and left their tent (5150m) at 0235 the following day. At 0900 they were halted for 7 hours by falling stones at an altitude of 5500m. -

State intervention often ignores or suppresses ICCAs, inadvertently or deliberately undermining and destroying them along with other aspects of indigenous peoples’ cultures, livelihoods, self-governance, and self-determination. Nepal’s high Himalayan national parks, however, provide examples of how some indigenous peoples such as the Sharwa (Sherpa) of Sagarmatha (Mount Everest/Chomolungma) National Park (SNP) have continued to maintain customary ICCAs and even to develop new ones despite lack of state recognition, respect, and coordination. The survival of these ICCAs offers Nepal an opportunity to reform existing laws, policies, and practices, both to honour UN-recognised human and indigenous rights that support ICCAs and to meet International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) standards and guidelines for ICCA recognition and for the governance and management of protected areas established in indigenous peoples’ territories. -

Everest and Oxygen—Ruminations by a Climber Anesthesiologist By David Larson, M.D. Gaining Altitude and Losing Partial Pressure with Dave and Samantha Larson Dr. Dave Larson is an obstetric anesthesiologist who practices at Long Beach Memorial Medical Center, and his daughter Samantha is a freshman at Stanford University. Together they have successfully ascended the Seven Summits, the tallest peaks on each of the seven continents, a feat of mountaineering postulated in the 1980s by Richard Bass, owner of the Snowbird Ski Resort in Utah. Bass accomplished it first in 1985. Samantha Larson, who scaled Everest in May 2007 (the youngest non-Sherpa to do so) and the Carstensz Pyramid in August 2007, is at age 18 the youngest ever to have achieved this feat. Because of varying definitions of continental borders based upon geography, geology, and geopolitics, there are nine potential summits, but the Seven Summits is based upon the American and Western European model. Reinhold Messner, an Italian mountaineer known for ascending without supplemental oxygen, postulated a list of Seven Summits that replaced a mountain on the Australian mainland (Mount Kosciuszko—2,228 m) with a higher peak in Oceania on New Guinea (the Carstensz Pyramid—4,884 m). The other variation in defining summits is whether you define Mount Blanc (4,808 m) as the highest European peak, or use Mount Elbrus (5,642 m) in the Caucasus. Other summits include Mount Kilimanjaro in Kenya, Africa (5,895 m), Vinson Massif in Antarctica (4,892 m), Mount Everest in Asia (8,848 m), Mount McKinley in Alaska, North America (6,194 m), and Mount Aconcagua in Argentina, South America (6,962 m). -

Scenes from the 20th Century REINHOLD MESSNER An Essay for the New Millennium Based on a lecture given at the Alpine Club Symposium: 'Climbing into the Millennium - Where's it Going?' at Sheffield Hallam University on 6 March 1999 erhaps I'm the right age now, with the right perspective to view Pmountaineering, both its past and its future. Enough time has elapsed between my last eight-thousander and my first heart attack for me to be able to look more calmly at what it is we do. I believe it will not be easy for us to agree on an ethic that will save mountaineering for the next millennium. But in our search for such an ethic we first need to ask ourselves what values are the most important to us, both in our motivation for going to the mountains and on the mountains themselves. The first and most important thing I want to say has to do with risk. If we go to the mountains and forget that we are taking a risk, we will make mistakes, like those tourists recently in Austria who were trapped in a valley hit by an avalanche; 38 of them were killed. All over Europe people said: 'How could 38 people die in an avalanche? They were just on a skiing holiday.' They forgot that mountains are dangerous. But it's also important to remember that mountains are only dangerous if people are there. A mountain is a mountain; its basic existence doesn't pose a threat to anyone. It's a piece of rock and ice, beautiful maybe, but dangerous only if you approach it. -

Book Reviews 1988 COMPILED BY GEOFFREY TEMPLEMAN Touching the Void Joe Simpson ]onathan Cape, 1988, Pp174, £10·95 In 1985 Joe Simpson and Simon Yates set out to climb the W face of Siula Grande in the Peruvian Andes. They succeeded in their objective after three days and started on the descent of the N ridge in atrocious snow conditions. After a night on the ridge they continued their slow progress, breaking through cornices and having short falls, until one such fall resulted in Simpson breaking his leg. Yates started lowering Simpson down the W face, and they had almost reached the bottom when Simpson shot off over an overhanging cliff and was left hanging. After a considerable length of time in which nothing could be done, Yates cut the rope. Giving Simpson up for dead, he made his way back to Base Camp and, during the next three days, sorted out Simpson's belongings, burnt his clothes and prepared to leave camp. It was then that Simpson arrived in a state of exhausted delirium, having escaped from the deep crevasse into which he had fallen and crawled and hopped over the long glacier and moraine. The book recounts the story in a graphic and frank way. The psycho logical trauma following the decision to cut the rope; the thoughts engendered by being trapped in a deep crevasse with a broken leg; the embarrassment of the eventual meeting: these things are written about in depth and with a clarity that is only too well understood. You know Simpson will survive, but the tale is like a thriller - I almost said, a cliff-hanger - progressing from one dramatic situation to the next. -
