THE WORKS OF ART IN THE AGE OF DIGITAL REPRODUCTION THE THEORETICAL BACKGROUND The Impossible Exhibitions project derives from an instance of cultural democracy that has its precursors in Paul Valéry, Walter Benjamin and André Malraux. The project is also born of the awareness that in the age of the digital reproducibility of the work of art, the concepts of safeguarding and (cultural and economic) evaluation of the artistic patrimony inevitably enter not only the work as itself, but also its reproduction: “For a hundred years here, as soon as the history of art has escaped specialists, it has been the history of what can be photographed” (André Malraux). When one artist's work is spread over various museums, churches and private collections in different continents, it becomes almost impossible to mount monograph exhibitions that give a significant overall vision of the great past artist's work. It is even harder to create great exhibitions due to the museum directors’ growing – and understandable – unwillingness to loan the works, as well as the exorbitant costs of insurance and special security measures, which are inevitable for works of incalculable value. Impossible Exhibitions start from these premises. Utmost detail resolution, the rigorously 1:1 format (Leonardo's Last Supper reproduction occupies around 45 square meters!), the correct print tone – certified by a renowned art scholar – make these reproductions extraordinarily close to the originals. -

Cozzi 55, 20125 Milano (Italy) and INFN, Sezione Milano-Bicocca. 3 CNR-IFN,piazza L. da Vinci, 20132 Milano (Italy). *Corresponding author: [email protected] Abstract Non-invasive, portable analytical techniques are becoming increasingly widespread for the study and conservation in the field of cultural heritage, proving that a good data handling, supported by a deep knowledge of the techniques themselves, and the right synergy can give surprisingly substantial results when using portable but reliable instrumentation. In this work, pigment characterization was carried out on twenty-one Leonardesque paintings applying in situ XRF and FORS analyses. In-depth data evaluation allowed to get information on the colour palette and the painting technique of the different authors and workshops. Particular attention was paid to green pigments (for which a deeper study of possible pigments and alterations was performed with FORS analyses), flesh tones (for which a comparison with available data from cross sections was made) and ground preparation. Some are faithful to Bungalow a single style. Many more have elements from several Art Deco different styles and are referred to as eclectic. Even Art Moderne more only hint at the basic architectural style from International which they are derived; we might refer to them as vernacular versions of the style. Understanding the basic characteristics of architectural styles is a useful way to begin seeing buildings more critically. Such an understanding also helps in describing a building, in determining its age, or in assessing its architectural value when compared with other buildings of the same style. This guide is an introduction to some of the most significant architectural styles employed during the past 150 years of Manitoba’s history. There are two other sections—building traditions and types, and a glossary of architectural terms—that constitute a complete set for reference. This section, Styles, describes those sophisticated styles that were most influential in this province’s architectural development. Many buildings, often those not designed by formally-trained architects, do not relate at all to these historical styles. Their designs are often dictated by utility, and may be influenced by the designer’s familiarity with other buildings in the district. Such vernacular buildings are sometimes quite particular to a region. The styles discussed here stem from various historical traditions. Comedy, Satire, Paradox, and the Plurality of Discourses in Cinquecento Italy: Introduction stefano jossa and ambra moroncini Royal Holloway University of London and University of Sussex n early modern Italy, specifically in the sixteenth century, comedies, satirical Iworks, and paradoxical verse and prose contributed to the rich and varied facets of Renaissance culture to such an extent that critical perspectives on the heterogeneous production of these most dissimulating of genres might result in broader interpretations than scholarship has so far acknowledged, not least because “popular theatre, particularly in rural areas, was resistant but undocumented.”1 The commedia erudita—the Italian vernacular comedy of the sixteenth century written in emulation and imitation of the two ancient Roman playwrights Plautus and Terence—was a genre in which Ariosto and Machiavelli excelled, but which never reached the same high status as the more classical genres of epic poetry and tragedy. The alleged “desolante uniformità del teatro comico del Cinquecento” (“dismaying uniformity of Cinquecento theatre”) and “the heavy hand of the Roman playwrights and theorists” were considered to have inhibited the natural comic spirit of the Italians, “leaving the best fruits of the comic tradition to be plucked by the more independent dramatists of Spain and England.”2 Satire, on the other hand, despite being a 1. Neoclassical architecture 1 Neoclassical architecture Neoclassical architecture was an architectural style produced by the neoclassical movement that began in the mid-18th century, both as a reaction against the Rococo style of anti-tectonic naturalistic ornament, and an outgrowth of some classicizing features of Late Baroque. In its purest form it is a style principally derived from the architecture of Classical Greece and the architecture of Italian Andrea Palladio. The Cathedral of Vilnius (1783), by Laurynas Gucevičius Origins Siegfried Giedion, whose first book (1922) had the suggestive title Late Baroque and Romantic Classicism, asserted later[1] "The Louis XVI style formed in shape and structure the end of late baroque tendencies, with classicism serving as its framework." In the sense that neoclassicism in architecture is evocative and picturesque, a recreation of a distant, lost world, it is, as Giedion suggests, framed within the Romantic sensibility. Intellectually Neoclassicism was symptomatic of a desire to return to the perceived "purity" of the arts of Rome, the more vague perception ("ideal") of Ancient Greek arts and, to a lesser extent, sixteenth-century Renaissance Classicism, the source for academic Late Baroque. Many neoclassical architects were influenced by the drawings and projects of Étienne-Louis Boullée and Claude Nicolas Ledoux. The many graphite drawings of Boullée and his students depict architecture that emulates the eternality of the universe. There are links between Boullée's ideas and Edmund Burke's conception of the sublime. Pulteney Bridge, Bath, England, by Robert Adam Ledoux addressed the concept of architectural character, maintaining that a building should immediately communicate its function to the viewer.
