  • The Jewish Fifth Column in the Clergy
PLOT AGAINST THE CHURCH: PART 4 THE JEWISH FIFTH COLUMN IN THE CLERGY By Maurice Pinay (1962) This volume includes sections IV, of Pinay's 'Plot Against the Church', which address the infiltration of the clergy by Occult secret societies. It was written before Vatican II in order to address the threat to the Church posed by the council. The book makes an excellent case using Church documents and 'Jewish histories', that the conspiracy to corrupt the Church from within has been active for over 2000 years. The long-standing conflict between occult infiltrators and Catholics has largely been ignored by Catholic historians. This is an important corrective. This version was translated from the original German and Spanish editions. • The Moor's Last Sigh
JOURNAL OF ENGLISH STUDIES - VOLUME 3, (2001-2), 193-215 THE MOOR’S LAST SIGH: SPANISH-MOORISH EXOTICISM AND THE GENDER OF HISTORY IN BRITISH ROMANTIC POETRY DIEGO SAGLIA University of Parma ABSTRACT. Legends and tales of Islamic Granada were among the most frequently re-elaborated exotic subjects in British Romantic literature. A popular theme in the early decades of the nineteenth century, Spanish Orientalism attracted both famous writers such as Lord Byron, Joanna Baillie, Washington Irving, Felicia Hemans or Letitia Landon, and less familiar ones such as Lord Porchester, George Moir and Lady Dacre. This essay concentrates on one component of the myth of Granada which enjoyed great diffusion in Romantic-period literature, the tale of the Moor’s Last Sigh and the tears shed by the last Muslim monarch on leaving his capital forever after the Christian conquest in 1492. The aim is to illustrate how, in migrating from its original context, this tale comes to signify and emblematize issues of gender and notions of history as progress specific to British culture. The poetic texts examined here employ the Spanish-Orientalist myth to elaborate ideas of masculinity and femininity, as well as reflections on power and its extinction, the fall of empires and the emergence of new states. Thus King Boabdil’s tears were exotically popular also because they were removed from their original meaning and import, and refashioned into vehicles for ideological concerns proper to British Romantic-period culture. “There are a few places scattered about this ‘working-day world’ which seem to be elevated above its dull prosaic level, and to be clothed with the magic lights and tints of poetry” –and one of these is Granada, the “charmed name” of which, “as if by fairy power, conjures up splendid scenes and pageants of the past” (Quarterly Review 1830: 55).

  • Captivity in the Frontier Between the Kingdom of Castille and the Emirate of Granada (XIV- XV Centuries)
Among Christians and Muslims: An Approach to the Captivity in the Frontier between the Kingdom of Castille and the Emirate of Granada (XIV- XV Centuries) J. Fernando Tinoco Díaz* Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas Abstract The proposition of this paper is to analyze the various facets of the captivity phenomenon in the frontier between Granada and Castile. In this context, the captivity was a very usual manifestation of the frontier violence and insecurity lived for the Andalusian society. For this reason, it begins referring to key issues such as the context, the importance of the captivity and the measures that occurred around the release of these captives in this geographical area. Subsequently, specific mentions are also added to the living conditions of these captives and their possible forms of redemption. Consequently, the captivity is here shown as a strong social problem through which to observe the main characters of the border society of the Iberian Peninsula during the end of the Middle Ages. Keywords Captivity, Kingdom of Castile, Emirate Nasrid of Granada, Andalusia, Late Mid- dle Ages. * Licenciado en Historia por la Universidad de Extremadura. • Tour Extension Itinerary – 'Western Andalucia' Overview
Tour Extension Itinerary – ‘Western Andalucia’ 3 days/3 nights Overview Our ‘Western Andalucía’ extension takes you to the area of Andalucía near the Portuguese Border, the Cities of Jerez de la Fronter ‘Jerez’, Cadiz, Arcos de la Frontera before returning for a final night in Málaga. Day 1: JEREZ After breakfast we depart for Jerez. Famous for Sherry, Flamenco and Andalucian Horses, Jerez is the 5th largest City in Andalucia. Jerez de la Frontera, or simply Jerez, is most definitely known for its production of Sherry in the Bodegas that dot the City and from the vineyards in the surrounding countryside. Wealthy merchants built palatial mansions in the centre of the City and their Sherry & Brandy Bodegas were established close by. After the fall of the Western Roman Empire, the Vandals and the Visigoths ruled it until the Arabs conquered the area in 711. In the 11th century it briefly became the seat of an independent Taifa. Some years later 'Abdun ibn Muhammad united it with Arcos and ruled both until in 1053 it was annexed to Seville. In the 12th and 13th Centuries, when the Almohads conquered the city, Jerez underwent a period of great development, building its defence system and setting the current street layout of the old town. In 1231 the Battle of Jerez took place within the town's vicinity, Christian troops under the command of Álvaro Pérez de Castro, lord of the House of Castro and grandson of Alfonso VII, King of Castile and León, defeated the troops of the Emir Ibn Hud, despite the numerical superiority of the latter.

Quidditas 40 (2019) 19 Embellishing the Past: Fernando del Pulgar and History at the Court of the Catholic Monarchs Bretton Rodgriguez University of Nevada, Reno Composed in the late fifteenth century, Fernando del Pulgar’s Crónica de los Reyes Católicos was the official account of – and therefore one of the best sources for – some of the most significant events in late medieval Spanish history. With- in his narrative, Pulgar described the marriage of Isabel and Fernando (better known today as the Catholic Monarchs), the establishment of the Spanish Inqui- sition, and the buildup to the conquest of Granada. Despite the importance of the events that he described, as well as his own role as official historian, Pulgar revealed a radical understanding of history and history writing in his personal correspondence.

WILLIAM H PRESCOTT HISTORY OF THE REIGN OF FERDINAND AND ISABELLA, THE CATHOLIC VOLUME I 2008 – All rights reserved Non commercial use permitted HISTORY OF THE REIGN OF FERDINAND AND ISABELLA, THE CATHOLIC. BY WILLIAM H. PRESCOTT. IN THREE VOLUMES. VOL. I. TO THE HONORABLE WILLIAM PRESCOTT, LL.D., THE GUIDE OF MY YOUTH, MY BEST FRIEND IN RIPER YEARS, THESE VOLUMES, WITH THE WARMEST FEELINGS OF FILIAL AFFECTION, ARE RESPECTFULLY INSCRIBED. PREFACE TO THE FIRST EDITION. English writers have done more for the illustration of Spanish history, than for that of any other except their own. To say nothing of the recent general compendium, executed for the "Cabinet Cyclopaedia," a work of singular acuteness and information, we have particular narratives of the several reigns, in an unbroken series, from the emperor Charles the Fifth (the First of Spain) to Charles the Third, at the close of the last century, by authors whose names are a sufficient guaranty for the excellence of their productions. It is singular, that, with this attention to the modern history of the Peninsula, there should be no particular account of the period which may be considered as the proper basis of it,-- the reign of Ferdinand and Isabella. In this reign, the several States, into which the country had been broken up for ages, were brought under a common rule; the kingdom of Naples was conquered; America discovered and colonized; the ancient empire of the Spanish Arabs subverted; the dread tribunal of the Modern Inquisition established; the Jews, who contributed so sensibly to the wealth and civilization of the country, were banished; and, in fine, such changes were introduced into the interior administration of the monarchy, as have left a permanent impression on the character and condition of the nation.
