IN the following pages I purpose to give, not a history of the Theatre Royal, but a chronicle of the most important theatrical events which have oc- curred therein, from the time it was first opened to the public to the date of its most sad and unfor- tunate destruction. The data which I have col- lected will be found useful to the historian of the future and such I cannot doubt will be found at no distant period who will weave the salient facts into a consecutive and complete narrative. This has not been my object. I have sought merely to put together, as far as possible, in chronological order, the notable events which have taken place iv INTRODUCTION. since the Theatre was opened, of the vast majority of which I myself have been an eye-witness. My original intention was of narrower scope, as I purposed dealing merely with the annals of Italian Opera, which of themselves could not fail to be highly interesting to music lovers and play-goers, not only in Dublin, but throughout Ireland, and to many friends within and without the operatic pro- fession beyond the "silver streak." The advice of friends, whose opinions are in the highest degree worthy of respect with regard to all matters con- nected with the Dublin stage, induced me to enlarge the plan of the work, so as to include the entire period of the theatrical existence of the Royal, and to embrace its dramatic history as well as that which relates to the lyric stage. I have therefore noticed, in chronological order, the principal events which took place in the Royal during the whole period of its existence as a Theatre, the appearances of renowned actors, actresses and INTRODUCTION. V vocalists, the productions of famous plays and operas, together with other incidents and events which I thought likely to interest my readers. The casts of the Italian Operas will, I confidently -expect, be found exact and complete in every essential, and the record of the successive' appear- ances in Dublin of the most brilliant stars of the operatic firmament, will, no doubt, have a special interest for Irish amateurs. " In the compilation of the Annals of the Old House" in Hawkins-street, I have availed myself of all sources of information at my disposal news- paper files, collections of play-bills, books and pro- grammes, private memoranda and diaries, and my own notes, which go over a period of fifty-four years, during which I have had the honour of being associated with the National Theatre. The work has been to me a labour of love ; and no one will be more pleased if the chronicle that I have set down in the following pages should form vi INTRODUCTION. the basis of a more extended and elaborate history of the Theatre Royal. It is a gratification to me that I have been enabled to collect in proper sequence, to give form and shape to the record of events, especially some which are preserved only by tradition, or are hid away in places not easily accessible. I am fully aware of many defects in work but I trust to the my ; good-nature of my readers to overlook what is defective for the sake of whatever of interest they may discover.

Elle possède les meilleurs auteurs dont les productions, après s’être fait connaître à Paris, alimentent les scènes de province et sont, en assez grand nombre, traduites pour l’étranger, quand elles n’y sont pas représentées en langue française, comme en Russie, par exemple. Le théâtre entre pour beaucoup dans les causeries du monde. On pourrait même lui savoir gré de lutter souvent sans désavantage avec la politique qui tend à tout absorber. Que de bonnes soirées passées au spectacle et quelle agréable distraction nous donne une pièce bien jouée par des acteurs de talent ! Il est peu de personnes qui restent insensibles à ce genre de divertissement. On peut encore remarquer qu’il laisse un souvenir plus durable que bien d’autres incidents de la vie. Après dix et vingt ans, quand on a oublié une foule de choses, on se souvient parfaitement d’une comédie qui a fait plaisir et l’on en cite volontiers quelques traits heureux.

    1 Decentralising via Russia: Glinka’s A Life for the Tsar in Nice, 1890 Published Cambridge Opera Journal, Vol.27, No.1 (March 2015), pp.35-62 Abstract On 30 January 1890, the audience at the Théâtre Municipal in Nice witnessed something extraordinary. Midway through the first public performance of a Russian opera in France, Glinka’s A Life for the Tsar, the chorus and orchestra broke into a rendition of the Russian national anthem, followed by the ‘Marseillaise’. Both anthems were then repeated, with the audience calling out ‘Vive la Russie!’, ‘Vive la France!’ With France and Russia on the verge of an historic alliance, the evening was proclaimed a political and an artistic triumph. The success of this unusual event, I suggest, can be explained further by considering the context of operatic decentralisation in France, in conjunction with the arrival of the new director at the Théâtre, Raoul Gunsbourg. As a result of local and personal imperatives, the performance came to resonate nationally, with A Life serving as an unlikely emblem of modernity, while also bringing one peripheral French region strongly into Paris’s purview. *** In 1891, Charme dangereux, the latest release from the prolific novelist André Theuriet, hit the shelves. It told the story of a staid Parisian, Jacques, who succumbs to the charms of a mysterious Russian princess, the unforgettably named Mania Liebling, while vacationing in Nice.     LES ACTEURS ITALIENS DE LA VIE MUSICALE EN FRANCE AU XIXe SIÈCLE Approche prosopographique et analyse des réseaux Résumé : Les opéras italiens connaissent une très large diffusion en France au XIXe siècle, qu’ils soient représentés en version originale au Théâtre-Italien de Paris ou sous la forme de traductions sur les autres scènes parisiennes et de province. Cette diffusion est encouragée sous l’Empire par le goût prononcé de Napoléon pour la musique italienne et se poursuit sous la Restauration avec le succès des opéras de Rossini. Loin de se limiter à l’art lyrique, l’influence de la musique italienne en France se manifeste au sein d’institutions telles que le Conservatoire de Paris, le Théâtre-Italien, l’Opéra de Paris et son École de danse, l’Académie des Beaux-Arts et l’Ordre national de la Légion d’honneur. Qu’ils soient compositeurs, directeurs de théâtre, décorateurs, chanteurs, instrumentistes, chefs d’orchestre, danseurs, journalistes, éditeurs ou facteurs d’instruments, les centaines d’acteurs italiens de la vie musicale en France exercent leurs professions dans toutes les branches du secteur. The University of Melbourne September 2002 11 Lineages of Vocal Pedagogy in Australia The following is an introductory lineage study of major lineages of vocal pedagogy in Australia. Many lineages not contained in the body of the thesis are outlined in this document. The lineage also provides a cursory glance at the major lineages of traditional Italian pedagogy which have relevance for an Australian vocal pedagogical context, and it was hoped that this might assist readers in ascertaining the long term lineage links without excessive complication. The symbol'-' indicates that the following is separated from what is immediately above, and that a new lineage has begun. Lineages are indicated as subsequent generations by the use of one tab space, to show that the following names are pupils of the aforementioned. Naturally, lists of students of particular teachers are far from complete, and some only represent one particularly successful pupil of a given teacher. Where possible dates and biographical information are given, in order to contextualise the work of a singer or teacher. The documentation of lineages is not exhaustive. Many teachers who were active between 1850 and 2000 are omitted owing to the difficulties in finding information on private studios through archival resources and the reluctance of many present teachers to participate in surveys.
