We understand the importance of creating signature sculptures and how they can offer a wonderful opportunity not only to welcome visitors but create identifying artworks; ones that will reflect the aspirations of the city. Our approach to all our public art projects is to create artworks that are derived from and specific to the environment where they are located. We seek out elements, local in nature, that have relevance based on an understanding of the historical, cultural, and/or geological significance of the site and its current use by the surrounding community. We are excited to propose a sculpture for the Sarasota’s 14th Street and US 41 Roundabout. We loved visiting this city with its beautiful beaches and botanical gardens. What struck us though was seeing the city’s many public art pieces and how these artworks ranged from figurative to abstract. We were impressed how these different artistic styles, when considered as a whole, became a cohesive art collection. Sarasota’s world class art and culture are, to us, what sets this city apart. With any group of people, you will always find differing perspectives on any given subject; and art is no exception. The beauty of a community is when differences are embraced to achieve a common goal. In this spirit, we will create a work of art that celebrates different perspectives and the unity underlying diverse points of view. We have chosen to use the image of a basket as the foundation for our visual narrative. Typically, baskets are made by aligning and placing the vertical elements (spokes). These spokes run from the center out and then upwards (Figure A). Once these are in place, the horizontal weavers are woven in and out between them. In this same way, our basket is constructed using 24 “spokes” or vertical elements all connected at a center point and rising Figure B upwards. Each Figure A of the spokes will be fabricated in stainless steel. Outer surfaces will remain in brushed stainless steel while the sides, visually hidden from a front view, will be powdercoated in different colors. These colors will become apparent when seen from a side view. Together they create a pattern of a complete color wheel (Figure B). Our idea is to emphasize the notion of individual elements, all different with their own characteristics, coming together to create a whole basket-like form. When drivers circle around the roundabout, they will see the colors gradually change. This will allow people to enjoy the artwork from different viewpoints. Horizontal weavers are represented in our sculpture by the cars, bicyclists and pedestrians circling it. Conceptually, everyone moving around the roundabout is taking part in the ongoing weaving of this basket; the interlacing of the spokes and the weavers, to create a completed basket. 14th Street Roundabout Page 703 of 1673 Ide Baskets hold a symbolic meaning for many cultures throughout time. For Native American cultures, they often represent the close connection between humankind and nature. In Egyptian art and writing, the basket is thought to suggest wholeness, togetherness. For us the image/meaning of our sculpture can be likened to a harvesting basket, with its yield gathered to sustain the community. In this same way, our basket captures and contains for a moment, the sun, the spirit and energy of Sarasota in order to nourish the creative spirit of the city. At night time, the sculpture is illuminated from within using LED lights. It gives out a soft golden glow that will create an illusion of a pot of gold. During the day time the viewers’ attention is drawn to the sculptural form and its surface colors. In the evening, they will enjoy the glowing light of the days harvest. This sculpture measures approximately 15 feet in diameter and stands 14 feet high from the concrete pedestal that rises approximately 4.5 feet above the ground. The total height is 18 feet 6 inches to ensure visibility from a distance. We have experience completing artworks that can withstand Florida’s harsh weather and saltwater conditions. We completed a public art project for Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale, working with a Florida licensed structural engineer to meet the city’s requirement that the artwork withstand 150 mph winds. We also worked with an art conservator who approved our materials and paint, suitable for ocean / salt water air and UV protection. Sarasota is a destination city that has so much to offer. We’d like to create a truly unique sculpture that captures the essence of Sarasota and will add to its reputation as an Art capitol. This artwork will not only embrace Sarasota’s current values but gives a new vitality to the city, now and for generations to come. 14th Street Roundabout Page 704 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 705 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 706 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 707 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 708 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 709 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 710 of 1673 Ide Artist’s Previous Works 14th Street Roundabout Page 711 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 712 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 713 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 714 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 715 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 716 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 717 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 718 of 1673 Ide 14th Street Roundabout Page 719 of 1673 Ide Saori Ide & Jonathan Russell RIDE ART, LLC www.rideartstudio.com 2410 Valley Street, Berkeley, CA 94702 Saori Ide: (415) 902-0343 [email protected] Jonathan Russell: (415) 902-4350 [email protected] IMAGE LIST Image 01 Title: PASSAGES (Wind Sculpture) Completed in May, 2017 Medium: Stainless Steel, Powdercoated Stainless Steel, LED Lighting and Acrylic Dimensions: 22’h x 9’w x 9’d Location: Brighton, CO Budget: $120,000. Worldwide Readership Research Symposium 2007 Session 2 Paper 9 FREE NEWSPAPER READERSHIP Piet Bakker, Amsterdam School of Communications Research, University of Amsterdam Abstract Twelve years after the introduction of the first free commuter newspaper in Sweden, circulation of free newspapers has risen to 40 million daily copies. Readership of free newspapers is more complex and in many cases harder to pin down. In general it is different from readership of paid newspapers. The first difference concerns the demographics of the readers: free papers target the affluent 18 to 34 group and in many cases try to achieve that by choosing particular ways of distribution, and also by concentrating on specific content. Age, indeed seems to be significantly lower in most cases although the average readers does not seem to be particularly wealthy. The second distinct feature is the amount of unique readers of free newspaper. Results on the few available cases indicate that around half of the readers only read papers although also lower levels have been reported. The third issue concerns readers per copy. The traditional free commuter daily can reach to a rather high number of readers per copy; but with many markets reaching free newspaper saturation this number seems to be dropping, whereas free door-to-door distributed free papers and afternoon papers have a lower readership per copy. In this paper we will present information on these three issues from a dozen markets, using audited readership data. Free Newspaper Readership The World Association of Newspapers (2007) reported on the year 2006 that daily circulation of newspapers increased with 4.61 percent (25 million copies) compared to 2005.

  • FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: KPF Celebrates Opening of Spring City 66 the Design Reconnects Kunming's Pedestrian Pathways As It Nods
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: KPF Celebrates Opening of Spring City 66 The design reconnects Kunming’s pedestrian pathways as it nods to the unique landscape of Yunnan Province. New York, New York – February 21, 2020 – Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates (KPF) recently celebrated the opening of Spring City 66, a mixed-use development in Kunming, China. One of the largest commercial complexes in the city, the 430,000 m2 Spring City 66 is comprised of a retail podium and office tower that are carefully integrating into the surrounding context. Located adjacent to two major pedestrian-friendly boulevards and metro lines, Spring City 66’s accessibility and public amenities weave this high-density, mixed-use destination directly into the urban fabric of Kunming. Design Inspiration The design for Spring City 66 is responds to Yunnan Province’s unique landscape and its location along historic trade routes. A landscaped promenade, reminiscent of the region’s verdant valleys, is central to the project, while the surrounding undulating retail podium and a crag-like tower nod to the nearby Shilin Stone Forest’s notable limestone formations. The project’s varied program weaves along multiple levels of terraces lined with shops and restaurants, creating a vibrant destination for the city. “The KPF design for Spring City 66 illustrates our belief that the most compelling architecture strongly expresses the spirit of its place. Kunming is a city of outdoor life, of vibrant color, and exciting topography. This building reflects that character in the shape of its roofs, and in its facade materials. We worked closely with Hang Lung, as we have previously in Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Hangzhou, and Hong Kong, to weave together varied activities of working, shopping, and dwelling into one urban hive of activity,” notes KPF President and Design Principal James von Klemperer.

Victoria Embankment Foreshore Hoarding Commission 1 Introduction ‘The Thames Wunderkammer: Tales from Victoria Embankment in Two Parts’, 2017, by Simon Roberts, commissioned by Tideway This is a temporary commission located on the Thames Tideway Tunnel construction site hoardings at Victoria Embankment, 2017-19. Responding to the rich heritage of the Victoria Embankment, Simon Roberts has created a metaphorical ‘cabinet of curiosities’ along two 25- metre foreshore hoardings. Roberts describes his approach as an ‘aesthetic excavation of the area’, creating an artwork that reflects the literal and metaphorical layering of the landscape, in which objects from the past and present are juxtaposed to evoke new meanings. Monumental statues are placed alongside items that are more ordinary; diverse elements, both man-made and natural, co-exist in new ways. All these components symbolise the landscape’s complex history, culture, geology, and development. He predominantly takes large format photographs with great technical precision, frequently from elevated positions.
