There is an immediate visual impact from cfieve dl3allard's jewelry that demands closer inspection. Bold, innovative design and highly imaginative construction combine to make each piece, indi vidually conceived, a statement in itself. His attention to detail and respect for his materials is readily apparent. Superb technique is used to blend turquoise and other , exotic woods, coral and carved into functional art. P.O. STUDIO 12 • 7122 FIFTH AVENUE. SCOTTSDALE. ARIZONA 85251

27 Founded by Mrs. Aileen o. Webb in 1943, originally to market ware s from rural New York potters and weavers, the American Crafts Council grew from its nucleus of about a dozen members to 18, 000 a decade ago. Today that number has mushroomed to over 37, 000 dedicated crafters. Early on, the founders of the Council recognized the importance of the voice of its membership in Council programs. As such, six Trustees, first nominated by their respective regional membership, are subsequently elected to serve a three-year term on the Board of Trustees. Simultaneously, in each of the six Regions there is elected an outstanding individual who serves during the same three years as a Program Coordinator for regional activities.

We welcome you to this Southwest Regional Benefit Fair. MarCia Chamberlain, Program Coordinator for the Southwest Region, would be the first to protest the compliment, but Simply stated, this event is her brainchild. And consider ing the amount of work involved, I'm tempted to add, brawn-child. Because of her outstanding leadership qualities, she has received fine assistance and support from ::lany friends and members of ACC who have served on numerous committees. This Fair is a cooperative event jointly developed and realized between ACC and the Fort Mason facility of the National Park Service. It is to Marcia and this core of volunteers that ACC owes a tremendous vote of confidence and thanks for the success of this event and the accompanying Directory .

In a sense, the Fair, patterned after ACC' s Northeast Craft Fair, again bears testimony to the early and still valid purpose for the founding of the Council: to provide a community place in which ideas, individualized lifestyles, alternative careers, and the resulting handmade functional and decorative objects can be exchanged and marketted. It is the nature of community gatherings to be a time for celebration. A time to celebrate quality in all aspects of our lives: in our relationships with each other, in the ideas generated by people of divergent creeds and experiences meeting in the open market place, in the objects created by these people which later testify to the history of our present culture.

All parts of the United States are touched by the Council through the activities of the Regional Programs. It is also quite apparent that in keeping with the Council's interest in the larger crafts community, that the majority of these activities are jointly hosted or financially seconded by local and state organi zations or institutions. It is to those individuals, organizations and institutions that we owe a special vote of thanks. In particular, we are most appreciative of Jerry L. Schober, Superintendent, Fort Mason, and the staff of Golden Gate National Recreation Area for their cooperation and assistance in realizing this summer event.

We welcome you as friends of the crafts to this first of, hopefully, many succeeding events sponsored by the Southwest Regional Assembly of ACC.

Ray Pierotti Director, Regional Programs
