Jesus, oh God Almighty thank you for answering my prayer; Faith is a Miracle iv SUMMARY The study examines and compares functions of siLuyana and ciLunda royal court languages at Lealui and Mwansabombwe palaces in Zambia. The literature reviews role of siLuyana and ciLunda in the speech communities portray the languages were lingua franca of Luyana and Luunda Kazembe. The research uses ethnographic methodology: questionnaires, interviews and participation observation to gather data, mostly collected at annual Kuomboka and Mutomboko ceremonies covers several years. The literature and responses comparatively examined both portray multilingualism, and siLuyana and ciLunda as royal court languages; the Litunga and Mwata are recognised traditional authority and custodians of Luyana and Luunda Kazembe culture. Kuomboka and Mutomboko ceremonies commemorate royal establishments‟ history and achievement and remind the old people and educate the youths about their Luyana and Luunda culture. The palaces have preserved the ceremonies as socialisation media and the languages as linguistic symbols to proclaim the kings: Litunga and Mwata‟s sacred royal authority. It reveals that the government mainly responded to the decline in government revenues, the widespread poverty and destitution and the distortion of internal trade. The study shows that during the emergency period, 1932-1934, the administration made changes to government structures and functioning so as to curtail expenditure and balance its budget. It reorganised staff in the public service, reduced budgetary allocations to departments and realigned several departments and provinces.

Using primary and secondary data sources, it was observed that the negative impacts of climate change among the Lozi people include; increase in atmospheric pressure and excessive heat and flooding, prolonged spells of unexpected changes in seasons, reduction in food production and security, as well as inadequate clean water supply and extinction of some plant and animal species. The study also revealed vast local ecological knowledge that, if utilised, may help in the adaptation of climate change.

    Managing inequality: the political ecology of a small-scale fishery, Mweru-Luapula, Zambia Bram Verelst1 University of Ghent, Belgium 1. Introduction Many scholars assume that most small-scale inland fishery communities represent the poorest sections of rural societies (Béné 2003). This claim is often argued through what Béné calls the "old paradigm" on poverty in inland fisheries: poverty is associated with natural factors including the ecological effects of high catch rates and exploitation levels. The view of inland fishing communities as the "poorest of the poorest" does not imply directly that fishing automatically lead to poverty, but it is linked to the nature of many inland fishing areas as a common-pool resources (CPRs) (Gordon 2005). According to this paradigm, a common and open-access property resource is incapable of sustaining increasing exploitation levels caused by horizontal effects (e.g. population pressure) and vertical intensification (e.g. technological improvement) (Brox 1990 in Jul-Larsen et al. 2003; Kapasa, Malasha and Wilson 2005). The gradual exhaustion of fisheries due to "Malthusian" overfishing was identified by H. Scott Gordon (1954) and called the "tragedy of the commons" by Hardin (1968). This influential model explains that whenever individuals use a resource in common – without any form of regulation or restriction – this will inevitably lead to its environmental degradation. This link is exemplified by the prisoner's dilemma game where individual actors, by rationally following their self-interest, will eventually deplete a shared resource, which is ultimately against the interest of each actor involved (Haller and Merten 2008; Ostrom 1990). Summarized, the model argues that the open-access nature of a fisheries resource will unavoidably lead to its overexploitation (Kraan 2011).

Africa’s reception of Christianity and the pace at which the faith permeated the continent were incredibly slow. Although the north, especially Ethiopia and Egypt, is believed to have come under Christian influence as early as the first century, it was not until the fourth century that Christianity became more widespread in north Africa under the influence of the patristic fathers. From the time of the African church fathers up until the fifteenth century, there was no trace of the Christian church south of the Sahara. According to William Lane, s.j.: It was not until the end of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries that Christianity began to spread to the more southerly areas of Africa. The Portuguese, in their search for a sea route to India, set up bases along the East and West African coasts. Since Portugal was a Christian country, mis- sionaries followed in the wake of the traders with the aim of spreading the Gospel and setting up the Church along the African coasts.1 Prince Henry the Navigator (1394–1460) of Portugal was the man behind these expeditions, in which priests “served as chaplains to the new trading settle- ments and as missionaries to neighboring African people.”2 Hence, at the close of the sixteenth century, Christian missionary work had increased significantly south of the Sahara. In Central Africa, and more specifically in the Kingdom of Kongo, the Gospel was preached to the king and his royal family as early as 1484.
