Simtek Grand Prix was Born from Simtek Research Ltd, the name standing for Simulation Technology. The company founders were Nick Wirth and Max Mosley, Both of whom had serious pedigree within motorsport. Mosley had Been a team owner Before with March, and Wirth was a mechanical engineering student who was snapped up By March as an aerodynamicist, working underneath Adrian Newey. When March was sold to Leyton House, Mosley and Wirth? Both decided to leave, and joined forces to create Simtek. • Forgotten F1 Teams – Arrows
Forgotten F1 Teams – Arrows Welcome to Forgotten F1 Teams – a mini series from Sidepodcast chronicling the rise and fall of teams that couldn’t stay the distance. This is the fourth show, we’ve already looked at Simtek, Pacific and Forti, but today we’re talking about Arrows. Arrows Grand Prix came to life in 1977, founded by previous Shadow employees, Franco Ambrosio, Alan Rees, Jackie Oliver, Dave Wass and Tony Southgate – the surnames of whom spell out Arrows… sort of. Based in Milton Keynes, their Formula 1 entry was a bit of a rush job, with their first ever car being produced in just 53 days. Riccardo Patrese was brought on board to steer the car and the early signs were promising. They finished tenth in their first race in ‘78, almost won their second, and picked up some points in their third Grand Prix. Unfortunately, the team didn’t have an easy start to life with some early controversies. Founder Franco Ambrosio had to leave the team after being found guilty of financial misconduct in Italy, and sent to prison. The team were then sued by Shadow for copyright on their chassis, which was upheld by the court. However, this didn’t stop them, as while the decision was being made over the the copied chassis, Arrows had built a brand new car, which then took to the track without them having to miss a race. Patrese was involved in a serious multi‐car pile up at the Italian Grand Prix that year. Fellow driver Ronnie Peterson died after the accident, and James Hunt, who was also involved, led a successful campaign to get Patrese banned from racing at the next Grand Prix.

  • Who Is the Best Formula 1 Driver? an Economic Approach to Evaluating Talent
ECONOMIC ANALYSIS & POLICY, VOL. 39 NO. 3, DECEMBER 2009 Who Is The Best Formula 1 Driver? An Economic Approach to Evaluating Talent Reiner Eichenberger* and David Stadelmann Department of Economics, University Freiburg, CH-1700 Fribourg, Switzerland (Email: [email protected]) Abstract: Who is the best formula 1 driver? Until today it was impossible to answer this question because the observable performance of a driver depends both on his talent and the quality of his cars. In this paper, we for the first time separate driver talent from car quality by econometrically analyzing data covering 57 years of Formula 1 racing. Our estimates also control for the number of drivers finishing, technical breakdowns and many other variables that influence race results. While Michael Schumacher is often believed to be the best driver, he is overtaken by Juan Manuel Fangio and Jim Clark. I. INTRODUCTION Who is currently the best Formula 1 driver? Who was the best Formula 1 driver in history? And what about the Australian drivers? Many people are more interested in such questions than in the very important research puzzles commonly dealt with in economic journals. Fortunately, these questions can be answered thanks to the tools used by economists. A Formula 1 driver is fast, if he is talented and has a good car. Moreover, his racing success depends on a large number of additional factors. Individual success is determined to a large extent by factors such as the competitors’ talents and the quality of their cars, the number of competitors in a race, weather conditions during the race, and pure racing luck.

First, it requires clean measures of productivity. Second, unobserved heterogeneity at workers, firms and workers/firms level challenges the identification of the age-productivity gradient in cross- sectional data. Finally, the study of the age-productivity link requires to partial out the role of experience and to account for the selection bias that arises if less able people drop out faster than more able ones. We tackle these issues by focussing on a panel of Gran Prix Formula One drivers and show that the age-productivity link has an inverted U-shape profile, with a peak at around the age of 30-32. WORKING PAPER NO. 226 The Age-Productivity Gradient: Evidence from a Sample of F1 Drivers Fabrizio Castellucci, Mario Padula and Giovanni Pica May 2009 University of Naples Federico II University of Salerno Bocconi University, Milan CSEF - Centre for Studies in Economics and Finance DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS – UNIVERSITY OF NAPLES 80126 NAPLES - ITALY Tel. and fax +39 081 675372 – e-mail: [email protected] WORKING PAPER NO. 226 The Age-Productivity Gradient: Evidence from a Sample of F1 Drivers Fabrizio Castellucci *, Mario Padula ** and Giovanni Pica *** Abstract Aging is a global phenomenon. If older individuals are less productive, an aging working population can lower aggregate productivity, economic growth and fiscal sustainability. Therefore, understanding the age-productivity gradient is key in a aging society. However, estimating the effect of aging on productivity is a daunting task. First, it requires clean measures of productivity. Wages are not such measures to the extent that they reward other workers attributes than their productivity. Second, unobserved heterogeneity at workers, firms and workers/firms level challenges the identification of the age- productivity gradient in cross-sectional data. Longitudinal data attenuate some identification issues, but give rise to the problem of partialling out the effect of aging from the pure effect of time. Third, the study of the age-productivity link requires investigating the role of experience and of seniority. We tackle these issues by focussing on a sample of Gran Prix Formula One drivers and show that the age-productivity link has an inverted U-shape profile, with a peak at around the age of 30-32.

  • Classic Battle in Store at Malaysian Gp on Sunday
14 OCT 1999 Sports-F1 (Preview) CLASSIC BATTLE IN STORE AT MALAYSIAN GP ON SUNDAY By: David Chelliah SEPANG, Oct 14 (Bernama) -- Although McLaren Mercedes may just wrap up both the championship titles at the inaugural F1 Petronas Malaysian Grand Prix this weekend, arch-rivals Scuderia Ferrari are certain to give them a run for their money. A strong showing here by McLaren at the expense of Ferrari will render the final race in Suzuka, Japan, on Oct 31 an academic exercise as far as the championship chase is concerned. However, indications are that the battle will go the distance to Suzuka, the closing F1 race for the century. Reigning world champion Mika Hakkinen of McLaren is leading the drivers' title chase with 62 points in a neck-and-neck battle with Ferrari's Eddie Irvine, who is just two points adrift. A classic battle is definitely shaping up between Hakkinen and Irvine, who between them have captured half the season's races going into the 15th leg at the Sepang F1 Circuit. Hakkinen will clinch the championship if he wins in Sepang and Irvine finishes no higher than fifth. For Irvine and the renowned Italian team, Ferrari, it will be a do-or-die mission to win both the drivers' and constructors' titles from McLaren. Ferrari are eight points behind leaders McLaren in the constructors' title standings. "It is very unlikely for me or Hakkinen to screw things up at this stage of the championship. I have got the opportunities to do it now or never," said the 34-year-old Irvine who will move to Jaguar next season.
