Dieser besondere Jahrestag ist eine gute Gelegenheit, die deutsch-pakistanischen Beziehungen zu würdigen, die sich außerordentlich positiv und freundschaftlich entwickelt haben und die wir gemeinsam weiter ausbauen wollen. Unsere hervorragende kulturelle und wissenschaftliche Kooperation spiegelt sich in einem lebendigen Austausch zwischen unseren Ländern und unseren Bürgerinnen und Bürgern wider. In diesem Bereich werden wir in Zukunft noch weitere Akzente setzen, etwa mit unserem Vorhaben, gemeinsam eine Technische Hochschule in Lahore zu gründen. Darüber hinaus sind unsere bilateralen Wirtschaftsbeziehungen, insbesondere die Handelsbeziehungen, auf einem deutlichen Wachstumskurs. Ich würde mich freuen, wenn wir sie in Zukunft auch mit einer deutsch-pakistanischen Außenhandelskammer in Karachi stärken könnten. Auch im europäisch-pakistanischen Rahmen erfahren unsere Beziehungen neue Impulse: Unter deutscher EU-Ratspräsidentschaft ist es im ersten Halbjahr 2007 gelungen, die europäisch-pakistanischen Beziehungen weiter voranzubringen. Wir haben die Ausweitung des politischen Dialogs vereinbart, und erstmals seit über zehn Jahren traf wieder der Gemeinsame Ausschuss zwischen der EU-Kommission und Pakistan zusammen. Ich freue mich, dass wir Pakistan in diesem Jahr als neues Mitglied im Asia-Europe Meeting ASEM in Hamburg willkommen heißen konnten, jenem wichtigen Kooperationsrahmen der Europa und Asien schon seit über zehn Jahren erfolgreich und praxisorientiert zusammenführt. Dort reicht unsere Themenpalette von außen- und sicherheitspolitischen Fragen bis zu Energie und Klimawandel, gesellschafts- politischen Themen wie Arbeit, Beschäftigung und Bildung bis hin zum Dialog der Kulturen und der Religionen sowie Informations- und Kommuni-kationstechnologie. Noch ein wichtiger Pfeiler in den dynamischen deutsch-pakistanischen Beziehungen, wie sie in diese Festschrift vorgestellt werden, ist das Engagement der Zivilgesellschaft. Es trägt wesentlich dazu bei, sie im Bewusstsein der Bürgerinnen und Bürger unserer Länder zu verankern. Mr Shahid Kemal I am honoured and privileged to convey the greetings and good wishes to all of you on the auspicious occasion of the 60th anniversary of Pakistan's independence. It is a source of enormous satisfaction and pride for all of us that Pakistan has come a long way since its independence sixty years ago. Pakistan has s strong and robust economy and the country's defence remains impregnable against any external threat. Today Pakistan is on an upward trajectory forging ahead on the past of sustainable progress and development and in building a modern and progressive nation. Pakistan is a country of 160 million people with a rich heritage and culture. The country has been at the crossroads of ancient civilization of the world. With the famous river Indus flowing through the heartland of Pakistan, the country displays some of the most magnificent landscapes as it stretches from the Arabian Sea, its southern border, to some of the world's most spectacular mountain ranges in the north. It was the leadership of the Father of the Nation, Quaid-e-Azam Mohammad Ali Jinnah, and the concept of Allama Dr. Mohammad Iqbal, complimented with the determination of the Muslims of South Asia that led to the establishment of Pakistan on 14 August 1947. On this occasion we pay tribute to those millions of souls who gave supreme sacrifices in the creation of Pakistan. As a result of prudent policies and far-reaching reforms, the socio-economic landscape of the country has witnessed a radical transformation. Pakistan has now been included in the global next 11 emerging economies. Pakistan is on a sound and sustainable macro-economic footing with investment and entrepreneurial activities spreading across sectors. Our national output and per capita have doubled over the past eight years. The industrial, agricultural and educational sectors are expanding rapidly. Foreign direct investment and foreign exchange reserves have reached unprecedented levels. The Karachi stock exchange has risen to a record high. Our aspirations are to accelerate socio-economic development, built a knowledge based society and contribute to peace and security in the world. We have made significant progress in strengthening institutions, promoting democracy and building a sound economy. Our elected national and provincial assemblies will shortly complete their full term of office as we prepare for general elections in the country. Pakistan has robust grass-root level democratic institutions. We have mandatory one third women representation in all the elected bodies at the national, provincial and local levels. Since the media was deregulated by the government in 2000 the independent television, radio and print media have been strengthening the social fabric of the nation through open discourse around issues concerning both state and society. Pakistan and Germany established diplomatic relations in 1951. Since that time our relations have been marked by close ties of friendship and cooperation. Pakistan attaches importance to its multifaceted relationship with Germany. In view of the cordial relations there have been frequent high level visits between the political leadership of our two countries. Our political relations have received impetus due to the common perceptions and cooperation in the fight against terrorism and for international peace and security. We value the contribution Germany has made in Pakistan's development. Germany is one of the largest trading partners of Pakistan. Bilateral trade has been increasing and there is large scope for enhancing the overall trade volume. In recent years our bilateral relations have strengthened and — 008 — expanded.     Samina Iqbal Art History Department Virginia Commonwealth University Richmond, Virginia AIPS Short Term Fellowship Report Grant Period: August 3rd – October 3rd, 2014 Location: Lahore and Islamabad The AIPS short-term fellowship grant enabled me to travel to Pakistan for two months this summer and conduct my dissertation research, which focuses on the Modern Art of Pakistan. More specifically, my research examines the modern trends in Pakistani art beginning in 1947 and the pivotal role of the five founding artists of Lahore Art Circle (LAC) in constructing modernist sensibilities and secular trends in Pakistani art from 1950-1957. LAC, founded in 1952 included artists: Ahmed Pervaiz (1926-1979), Ali Imam (1924-2002), Anwar Jalal Shemza (1928 -1985), Moyene Najmi (1926-1997), and Sheikh Safdar (1924-1983). Since my focus is on the first decade of Pakistani modern art after its independence, it is incredibly difficult to locate any archival material on this era especially in the field of Fine Arts. Locating the actual works of LAC artists, which are mostly in private collections, is the challenging task that I set for myself for the two-month research in Pakistan. I arrived in Lahore, intending to look at a few libraries for archival material and a few museums for actual works of arts. However, this research trip turned out to be extremely productive in finding and locating much more than I anticipated. I divided my research into three parts: a. I conducted a number of semiformal and informal interviews with art critics, friends and immediate family members of LAC artists. This included renowned writers such as Intizar Husain, Kishwar Naheed, Salima Hashmi, Nazish Attaullah, Quddus Mirza, Attiya Najmi, Shahnaz Imam, Anwar Saeed, Dr.

The last interview we finished where you were talking about Faiz Ahmad Faiz in the jail for first four years from 1951 to 1955. And then he was again arrested in 1958 and spent five years—five months, sorry—in the jail. And then he came out and so we are close to 1959. SH: 1959…haan (yes). That's when he joined the Arts Council. SI: Okay. So if you can tell us about his joining of the Arts Council and what did you see at that time. You were probably then… SH: By that time I was in my second year of college, Lahore College, and then I went to NCA. So it was that period. Sponenberg was the principal of NCA. I had done Fine Arts for two years at Lahore College. My parents were very keen that I go to NCA which was a new place; newly organised; not very many students—certainly not any girls. I was only the second batch that had girls and there were just four of us. And there were two girls in the previous year. SI: It was still not college at that time? SH: Yes it was. It had become the National College of Arts in 1960. SI: 1960, okay. SH: Or was it earlier? SI: I think it was… SH: 1958 or 1959…yes, probably 1958.
