  • Hanks: a Festival Everyone Can Enjoy
Hanks: A festival everyone can enjoy http://www.statesman.com/opinion/hanks-a-festival-everyone-can-enjoy-... Print this page Close Hanks: A festival everyone can enjoy Anna Hanks, LOCAL CONTRIBUTOR Published: 6:45 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 12, 2010 I had an unexpected realization during the Flaming Lips set at the Austin City Limits Music Festival. Watching the Oklahoma-based band closing their show with "Do You Realize??" I discovered tears steaming down my face. I was so embarrassed that I quickly donned my sunglasses, hoping no one noticed. The song includes the following lyrics sung slowly by the Lips' frontman Wayne Coyne: "Do you realize — that everyone you know someday will die And instead of saying all of your goodbyes — let them know You realize that life goes fast It's hard to make the good things last ... " Listening to the lyrics, I started thinking about how fragile our bodies really are. They bleed. Things break. They don't especially enjoy the unaccustomed exercise of traipsing around Zilker Park for three days in the sun. I spent a lot of time thinking about bodies and physical limitations while talking to people using the festival's accommodations for people with disabilities. Yet it wasn't until seeing the Flaming Lips play that song that I examined why I had chosen to write about this issue. A dozen years ago, my father started using a wheelchair. Since then, I've spent considerable time determining what's really accessible for a large man in a power chair. Thus, I often notice curb cuts, handicap bathrooms and well-located wheelchair ramps.

  • Examensuppsats På Kandidatnivå Nedskalad Truminspelning Med Ett Stort Sound
Keywords Kevin Parker, Tame Impala, producent, inspelning, trummor, musikanalys. Innehållsförteckning

  • The Dark Side User Manual
USER MANUAL 1.0.2 EASTWEST | THE DARK SIDE IMPORTANT COMPATIBILITY NOTE! Our Revolutionary New Opus Software Engine Our brand new Opus software engine has been years in development, and replaces the Play engine. All EastWest Libraries (with the exception of the original Hollywood Orchestra, the original Hollywood Solo Instruments, and the MIDI Guitar Series) are supported in Opus, allowing them to take advantage of a faster, more powerful, more flexible, and better looking software engine. Opus comes with some incredible new features such as individual instrument down- loads, customized key-switches, new effects for the mixer page, scalable retina user interface upgrades for legacy products, a powerful new script language, and many more features that allow you to completely customize the sound of each instrument. It’s one of the most exciting developments in the history of our company and will be the launching pad for many exciting new products in the future. Using Opus and Play Together Opus and Play are two separate software products, anything you have saved in your projects will still load up inside the saved Play version of the plugins. You can update your current/existing projects to Opus if you so choose, or leave them saved within Play. After purchasing or upgrading to Opus you do not need to use Play, but it may be more convenient to make small adjustments to an older composition in your DAW loading the instruments saved in Play instead of replacing them with Opus. For any new composi- tion, just use Opus. A Note About User Manuals All EastWest Libraries have their own user manuals (like this one) that refer to instru- ments and controls that are specific to their respective libraries, as well as referencing the Play User Manual for controls that are common to all EastWest Libraries.

  • Listening for the Hiss: Lo-Fi Liner Notes As Curatorial Practices
Popular Music (2018) Volume 37/2. © Cambridge University Press 2018, pp. 253–270, This is an Open Access article, distributed under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution licence (http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/), which permits unrestricted re-use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. doi:10.1017/S0261143018000041 Listening for the hiss: lo-fi liner notes as curatorial practices ALEXANDRA SUPPER Maastricht University, Department of Technology and Society Studies, Maastricht, the Netherlands E-mail: [email protected] Abstract Lo-fi music is commonly associated with a recording aesthetic marked by an avoidance of state-of- the-art technologies and an inclusion of technical flaws, such as tape hiss and static. However, I argue that lo-fi music is not defined merely by the presence of such imperfections, but by a discourse which deliberately draws attention to them. Album liner notes play an important role in this dis- course, as they can function as curatorial practices, through which lo-fi artists give an appropriate frame of reference to their recordings. By highlighting the ‘honest’ character of the recordings, the intimate recording spaces, the materiality of the equipment and its ambiguous character as machine/ instrument/performer, they invite listeners to adopt a genre-adequate mode of listening. Rather than listening past hiss and other recording artefacts as undesirable qualities, listeners are asked to listen for these qualities as an essential element of not just the recordings, but the music itself. Introduction ‘Recorded by Justin Vernon in the hunting cabin, Northwest Wisconsin.’ This short statement in the liner notes of Bon Iver’s indie folk album For Emma, Forever Ago describes an important element of the album’s success: ‘[The recordings made in the hunting cabin] were supposed to be demos, but they caught fire when he posted them online; the subsequent album went on to sell more than 300,000 copies.

  • Album of the Week: the Flaming Lips' Oczy Mlody
Album Of The Week: The Flaming Lips’ Oczy Mlody There are bands that do unique and weird things, and then there’s The Flaming Lips. Things have changed a lot since the band started out as “the punks on acid” in the early ‘80s and then gradually became an enigmatic and psychedelic act of wonder. The core members of Wayne Coyne, Michael Ivins and Steven Drozd always manage to delve into different territory and push the artistic envelope with each release. Their latest, Oczy Mlody, takes the senses to a totally different place. Soothing tones and hypnotic vibes are abundant from start to finish. It’s The Flaming Lips’ first album without longtime drummer Kliph Spurlock who left after the making of the band’s previous album, The Terror, in 2014. There are orchestral dimensions and extravagant structures that make up parts of each track. Coyne’s vocals seem like they’re traveling over the rhythms and beats as if on a voyage. It seems like the band has gone further toward the electronic realm while retaining their psychedelic roots. The album goes along with the space aesthetics that have always been a part of The Flaming Lips’ sound. A dream pop presence is noticeable while the wide-ranging arrangements keep the album from becoming redundant and boring. For a band as limitless as The Flaming Lips, there’s not a lot that can be predicted when a new release is put out. Oczy Mlody is a great example of how Coyne and company can progress their art and present new things more than 30 years later.

  • Split Single Announces New Album, Amplificado, out June 25Th on Inside Outside Records
April 27, 2021 For Immediate Release Split Single Announces New Album, Amplificado, Out June 25th on Inside Outside Records Watch Video for Lead Single, "(Nothing You Can Do To) End This Love" Split Single, the collective project of Chicago-based musician Jason Narducy (Bob Mould Band, Superchunk, Verbow), announces their new album, Amplificado, out June 25th on Inside Outside Records. Recorded at Electrical Audio in Chicago by Narducy (guitar/vocals), REM’s Mike Mills (bass), Jon Wurster (drums), Amplificado is a tight collection of rock songs dealing with the anxiety of living through a chaotic and cruel Republican majority rule and under the limitations of a worldwide pandemic. The new album comes nearly five years aer the release of Split Single’s 2016 album, Metal Frames, “a powerhouse pop record that prides itself on tenacious vocals and resolute rhythm guitar” (Stereogum) recorded with Wurster and Wilco’s John Sitrratt, and last year’s acclaimed, Jeff Award-nominated production of Verböten, a musical inspired by Narducy’s now-seminal childhood punk rock band of the same name. In conjunction with today’s announcement, Split Single presents the album’s lead single, “(Nothing You Can Do To) End This Love,” a message of love and support to the LGBTQ+ community. “The chords and melody for this song sounded like defiance to me,” says Narducy. “I wanted to write a lyric that matched this sonic mood. The first words that came into my head were ‘She loves her and he loves him.’ So it ended up being an unconventional love song. I’m expressing support and joy for diverse couples everywhere, including but not only my friends that appear in the video.” The charming accompanying video was directed by Jamie Fleischel.
