In the Garden Words Words Level 1: plant, seed, garden, trowel, watering can, flower Words Level 2: wheelbarrow, pond, rake, flowerpot, flowers, vine, tree, bush, gardening gloves, grow, water, soil, dirt, sun, leaf Getting Started ● Look at the new words together and make cards with all of the organic items (that is, everything but the gardening tools). Look at a magazine or catalog together and find these items in the pictures. How many do you see? Circle the pictures and say the words out loud together. Practice ● Memory game! Say: “I go outside, and I see a garden.” Your child repeats and adds one garden word (I go outside, and I see a garden and a seed). Next you repeat and add a third word. Continue until someone makes a mistake. Play again, but this time also add in other known words, even silly words like “sock” or “potato.” ● Draw it! Draw a scene with a pond, a tree, and a garden. Now add as many of the other words (Level 1 and Level 2) as you can. Older children can write the name of each item with its picture. Color in the drawing together. To review the words, first say each one and ask your child to find it. Next play a game of “I Spy.” Take turns! Activities ● The No-Dirt Garden! ○ Show your child that you can grow things with no garden and without soil! ○ You need: an avocado pit, a carrot top (2-3 cm with some root on top), toothpicks, a glass, a shallow dish, and cotton wool. -

The Inscription of Charms in Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts
Oral Tradition, 14/2 (1999): 401-419 The Inscription of Charms in Anglo-Saxon Manuscripts Lea Olsan Anglo-Saxon charms constitute a definable oral genre that may be distinguished from other kinds of traditionally oral materials such as epic poetry because texts of charms include explicit directions for performance. Scribes often specify that a charm be spoken (cwean) or sung (singan). In some cases a charm is to be written on some object. But inscribing an incantation on an object does not necessarily diminish or contradict the orality of the genre. An incantation written on an amulet manifests the appropriation of the technology of writing for the purposes of a traditionally oral activity.1 Unlike epic poetry, riddles, or lyrics, charms are performed toward specific practical ends and their mode of operation is performative, so that uttering the incantation accomplishes a purpose. The stated purpose of an incantation also determines when and under what circumstances a charm will be performed. Charms inscribed in manuscripts are tagged according to the needs they answer-whether eye pain, insomnia, childbirth, theft of property, or whatever. Some charms ward off troubles (toothache, bees swarming); others, such as those for bleeding or swellings, relieve physical troubles. This specificity of purpose markedly distinguishes the genre from other traditional oral genres that are less specifically utilitarian. Given the specific circumstances of need that call for their performance, the social contexts in which charms are performed create the conditions felicitous for performative speech acts in Austin’s sense (1975:6-7, 12-15). The assumption underlying charms is that the incantations (whether words or symbols or phonetic patterns) of a charm can effect a change in the state of the person or persons or inanimate object (a salve, for example, or a field for crops). -

Dr. Schulte’s “Interdisciplinary Approaches to the Arts and Humanities” highlighted many of the strengths of our program, and “Crafting Poetry” provided useful insight into my own poetry as well as a thorough introduction international poetry. Dr. Brettell’s “Art and Anarchy” course expounded the idea that poets could be political in their lives and work, both overtly and implicitly. -

It seeks to establish the relationship of the various valkyrja reflexes of the culture under study with other supernatural females (particularly the dísir) through the close and careful examination of primary source material, thereby proposing a new model of base supernatural femininity for the late Iron Age. The study then goes on to examine how the valkyrjur themselves deviate from this ground state, interrogating various aspects and features associated with them in skaldic, Eddic, prose and iconographic source material as seen through the lens of the hall-based warrior elite, before presenting a new understanding of valkyrja phenomena in this social context: that valkyrjur were used as instruments to propagate the pre-existing social structures of the culture that created and maintained them throughout the late Iron Age. -

UWE EBEL DARBIETUNGSFORMEN UND DARBIETUNGSABSICHT IN FORNALDARSAGA UND VERWANDTEN GATTUNGEN VORBEMERKUNG Der folgende Beitrag erschien zuerst 1982. Die mit ihm verfolgte Intention war es, ausgehend von den Graden der Fiktionalisierung des jeweils entfalteten Geschehens eine Differenz zwischen Íslendingasaga und Fornaldarsaga zu erarbeiten. Dabei hatte sich gezeigt, dass die Íslendingasaga trotz all der Momente, die sie als 'realistisch' erlebbar macht, das literarische Phänomen der Semantisierung von Form- elementen kennt, und dass die Fornaldarsaga trotz ihrer Phantastik solche Seman- tisierung nicht oder kaum aufweist. Ohne die mittelalterlichen Texte über jüngere und unangemessene Kriterien und Kategorien beschreiben zu wollen, ließe sich also ein Differenzmerkmal darin erblicken, dass die Íslendingasaga strukturell der Fiktion und die Fornaldarsaga strukturell dem Tatsachenbericht zuzuordnen sind. Erst im Verlauf der Gattungsgeschichte tritt in der Fornaldarsaga der Aspekt der Unter- haltung in den Vordergrund. Mit alledem soll nicht gesagt sein, dass der moderne Begriff der 'Literatur' dem originären Kontext gerecht wird, auch nicht, dass die Intention der Redaktoren und Traditoren damit beschrieben wäre. Das strukturelle Differenzmerkmal ist dennoch nicht zu verkennen und es gälte auszuwerten, was das über die fiktionale Gestaltung von Geschehen im isländischen Mittelalter besagt. Editors' Introduction Douglas A. Anderson Michael D. C. Drout Verlyn Flieger Tolkien Studies, Volume 7, 2010 Published by West Virginia University Press Editors’ Introduction This is the seventh issue of Tolkien Studies, the first refereed journal solely devoted to the scholarly study of the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. As editors, our goal is to publish excellent scholarship on Tolkien as well as to gather useful research information, reviews, notes, documents, and bibliographical material. In this issue we are especially pleased to publish Tolkien’s early fiction “The Story of Kullervo” and the two existing drafts of his talk on the Kalevala, transcribed and edited with notes and commentary by Verlyn Flieger. With this exception, all articles have been subject to anonymous, ex- ternal review as well as receiving a positive judgment by the Editors. In the cases of articles by individuals associated with the journal in any way, each article had to receive at least two positive evaluations from two different outside reviewers. Reviewer comments were anonymously conveyed to the authors of the articles. The Editors agreed to be bound by the recommendations of the outside referees. The Editors also wish to call attention to the Cumulative Index to vol- umes one through five of Tolkien Studies, compiled by Jason Rea, Michael D.C. Drout, Tara L.
