Kathryn Nelson I have been practicing law for approximately 28 years, and a large majority of that time has been spent in the courtroom. I now practice exclusively family law for both professional and personal reasons. I was formerly Special Counsel with The Harris Law Firm for almost eight (8) years before joining Cox Baker & Page in August, 2018. I have gone through my own personal divorce with three (3) kids involved, and so I understand first-hand the impact, emotions and stress that go along with divorce.

As a Colorado native, I attended Heritage High School in Littleton and Colorado State University on a Colorado Scholars Award and President’s Scholarship. In 1986, I graduated Magna Cum Laude from the Honors Program with a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and a minor in Spanish. Upon graduating from CSU, I moved to San Diego and worked as a legal secretary for a year. I then attended the University of San Diego Law School and received my juris doctor degree in 1990. I studied abroad for a period of time during law school in Salzburg, Austria. This was a fascinating experience where I was instructed by former United States Supreme Court Justice Kennedy, a law professor from Edinburgh, Scotland, and other accomplished scholars from around the globe.

I began my legal career as a Deputy District Attorney in Orange County, California where I remained as a prosecutor for eight (8) years. In this capacity, I tried over 100 cases to a jury and had the unique opportunity to deal with and help numerous victims of serious felony crimes. I specialized in domestic violence cases for a period of time. This experience has obviously spilled over and has helped me in family law.

After 12 years, I decided to return to my home state of Colorado. I worked on appeals for the Colorado Attorney General’s Office and acted as a relief prosecutor for the City of Englewood. However, once my third son was born I knew I needed to be at home while my boys were young. I was a stay-at-home mom for several years, undoubtedly my most demanding and rewarding position!

I am a member of the Colorado Bar Association Family Law Section, the Douglas/Elbert Bar Association, Colorado Women’s Bar Association, South Metro Denver, Castle Pines and Highlands Ranch Chambers of Commerce and Colorado Influential Women. I am admitted to practice law in California and Colorado.

My oldest son plays football for UNC, my middle son attends Cal Berkeley and my “baby” is a junior at Mountain Vista High School contemplating leaving for me college as well – how dare he!
