  • Measuring the Assurances of Female Political Leaders: Hillary Clinton On
“Measuring the Assurances of Female Political Leaders: Hillary Clinton on the Campaign Trail” Paper presented to panel B10: “Responsiveness and Representation” May 31, 201, 10:30-12 pm, CL 305 Annual meeting of the Canadian Political Science Association Regina Saskatchewan, May 30-June 1, 2018 Abstract: A well-established maxim within the political leadership literature holds that most leaders, most of the time, seek to assure citizens in their public communications. The provision of such certainty is thought to be integral to the exercise of leadership: uncertain citizens seek advice and reassurance, and so they turn to political leaders who can provide such goods (Downs, 1957). This understanding has been studied empirically mainly with respect to male leaders (de Clercy, 2005). This study asks: do female political leader also communicate certainty and uncertainty to citizens and, if so, how may such messages compare with those of male leaders? The study focuses on Hillary Clinton, the first woman to campaign for the American presidency. Leader communications are evaluated by analysing the content of Clinton’s three televised 2016 presidential debate performances using Atlas.ti, a qualitative content analysis program. These findings are compared with the same speech sets for her opponent, Donald Trump. Then, these values are compared with similar data for a sample of two other male presidential candidates. The study finds Clinton fits the role of a classic transactional leader and given the small number of cases under study here, there seems to be no systematic difference in how she communicated assurances to citizens based on her gender. Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 8 (2017): Bums and Bimbos Bums and Bimbos: Persuasive Personal Attack in Sports and Political Discourse Martha S. Cheng Associate Professor Rhetoric and Writing Department of English Rollins College Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 8 (2017): Bums and Bimbos “I just feel they’re bums. 95-percent of the game is bums…” --UFC Featherweight Champion, Conor McGregor “Fox viewers give low marks to bimbo @MegynKelly… ” --2016 Republican Presidential Candidate, Donald Trump Despite terms like “verbal warfare” and laments over our “argument culture,” accusation and attack have received scant scholarly attention compared to their counterparts, apology and defense. Perhaps this neglect is due in part to there being few formal speeches of attack while those of apology from individuals, corporations, and governments abound.1 To address this imbalance in research, Benoit and Dorries devel- oped a taxonomy of attack strategies, providing tools by which scholars can analyze and evaluate the effec- tiveness of persuasive attacks.2 Legge et al. 3 and Legge and DiSanza’s4 work have extended that taxonomy. Benoit and Dorries explain, “once a persuasive attack establishes guilt to the satisfaction of the audience…there may not be much to be gained from further developing the target’s guilt.”5 Therefore, they focus on the act of wrongdoing rather than blaming or simply attacking the target’s character. Yet, even cursory attention to news and enter- tainment media reveals a ubiquitous form of persuasive attack focused on the target’s character: the persuasive personal attack. Not surprisingly, such attacks are commonly heard in sports where opponents “trash talk” to goad each other with insults, hoping for a psychological advantage in a game, and in politics where those campaigning for office routine- ly attack their opponents for character flaws.

Do you believe in the constitution? In the Bible? Ted Cruz is not a constitutionalist, and therefore cannot be a constitutional conservative. He is an establishment conservative. Neither he nor Rubio are qualified candidates. But the birther question is only the tip of the iceberg: The most common tenets to support Ted Cruz deal with the following questions: Is Ted Cruz Constitutionally able to hold the Office of the United States Presidency? Is Ted Cruz a ‘True Conservative’? Is Ted Cruz devoted to the ‘Word of God’? I will try to answer these questions as shortly as possible, but truth be told, I could do a long dissertation on the matter. The answers to all of those Questions are No, No, and No. I've almost completed the first question, but it's enough to share now. http://www.mediaaccess.hu/userspace/pdf_files/Dispelling%20the%20Myths%20that %20Support%20Ted%20Cruz.pdf http://www.mediaaccess.hu/index.php?module=sourcepage&id=598&lang=1 In #TedCruz own words!! • Change and Continuity in the Financing of the 2016 U.S. Federal Election
ONE Change and Continuity in the Financing of the 2016 U.S. Federal Election David B. Magleby The 2016 election had both continuity and change in how it was financed and in the under lying dynamics of the election. When mea sured in dollars raised and spent, the gap between nominees Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump was the greatest in any election since the era of more reliable reporting began in 1976. The gap between Clin- ton and her joint party fundraising committees and Trump and his joint party fundraising committees was more than $285 million. Given this disparity, how Donald Trump financed and ran his cam- paign was dif fer ent from other candidates in his ability to exploit free media coverage, his limited fundraising in the nomination phase, and his claims that his opponents in both the nomination and general election phases of the contest were corrupted by their donors. The financing of Trump’s campaign became more conventional in the general election, where he relied heavi ly on a joint fundraising agreement with his party, used their voter mobilization infrastructure, successfully tapped into contributions from small donors, and benefited from spending by Super PACs and nonprofit groups late in the campaign. Whether another presi- dential candidate can mount a Trump- like campaign in the future is un- certain, and Trump himself has signaled that when he seeks reelection in 2020 he intends to mount a more conventional campaign by aggressively fundraising earlier than his pre de ces sors and endorsing a Super PAC, Amer i ca First.1 1 01-3659-2-ch01.indd 1 2/26/19 4:11 AM 2 David B.

THE POLITICAL SCENE THE ABSOLUTIST Ted Cruz is an unyielding debater—and the far right’s most formidable advocate. by Jeffrey Toobin JUNE 30, 2014 Ted Cruz says, “In both law and politics, I think the essential battle is the meta- battle of framing the narrative.” From his reading of Sun Tzu he has learned that a battle is won by “choosing the terrain on which it will be fought.” Photograph by Pari Dukovic. Ted Cruz, the Republican junior senator from Texas, has heard the line about how the Party needs to become more moderate to win Presidential elections. “It is amazing that the wisdom of the chattering class to the Republicans is always, always, always ‘Surrender your principles and agree with the Democrats,’ ” he told me. “That’s been true for my entire lifetime. The chattering classes have consistently said, ‘You crazy Republicans have to give up on what you believe and become more like Democrats.’ And, I would note, every time Republicans do that we lose.” Cruz then offered a short history of recent Presidential politics. Richard Nixon ran as a conservative, twice a winner; Gerald Ford, moderate, loser; Ronald Reagan, also twice a winner. “President George Herbert Walker Bush ran as a strong conservative, ran to continue the third term of Ronald Reagan, continue the Ronald Reagan revolution,” Cruz went on. “Then he raised taxes and in ’92 ran as an establishment moderate—same candidate, two very different campaigns. First one won, second one lost. In 1996, you got Bob Dole; 2000 and 2004, you have George W.

  • Understanding US Primary Candidates' Communication
Understanding US Primary Candidates’ Communication Strategies and Topics of Interest Through Twitter Abstract This paper examines the Twitter communication strategies of six major candidates seeking their party’s nomination for the 2016 U.S. presidential election. Firstly, we assess the top down communication strategy of the candidates. We look at the volume and type of activity while analyzing the text of the tweets to better understand the approaches of these candidates, such as their mentions of spouses and rivals. Using sentiment analysis, we uncover the level of positivity in each of the candidates’ tweets and the level of anger displayed by each of the candidates. Finally, in assessing the topics discussed, we note who, and what, policy areas the candidates choose to talk about. We conclude by discussing the advantages and challenges in assessing communication strategies using Twitter data. 1 The Impact of Twitter on Elections Politics has radically changed in just a generation. From the Internet being a receptacle upon which to dump policy positions that only political junkies consulted, online communication is now central to political strategy. The Internet represents a way to go direct to voters, to drive the campaign agenda with well-crafted messages without the expenditure of massive amounts of campaign funding. Twitter exemplifies this; a medium that encourages pithy (140 characters or less) communications direct to millions of followers at, essentially, no variable cost per tweet. The importance of Twitter in politics and everyday life has led to the microblogging site being widely studied in political marketing (Bode and Dalrymple 2015; Jackson and Lilleker 2011; Aharony 2012; Conway, Kenski, and Wang 2013).
