In exploring the ways in which Christian, Muslim, and Jewish authors from medieval and early modern Iberia represent the repentance of a rogue, this study not only sheds light on the important commonalities that these religious and literary traditions share, but also illuminates the particular questions that these picaresque and proto-picaresque texts raise within their respective religious, political and cultural milieux. By devoting himself to religious study, family life, and communal leadership he confirms his integral commitment to teshuvah. The rogue Guzmán de Alfarache also affirms that God has assisted him in finding a path to penance in the face of his hopeless situation as a galley slave; the prudent reader (discreto lector) is invited to decipher the multi-layered implications of this assertion. This dissertation seeks to study the intriguing stories of repentance outlined above, along with a number of medieval and early modern literary texts from the Arabic, Hebrew and Spanish traditions. The literary motif of the repentant rogue serves as the unifying principle in this study by providing a particularly fruitful case study in the intersection of comparative literature and religious studies. Rather than focusing on questions about the possible genetic connections between the Arabic and Hebrew PDTƗPD and the Spanish picaresque novel, this project endeavors to highlight the commonalities that these genres share, as well as to illustrate their points of divergence. Accordingly, this study examines texts from different periods and tenors variously concerned with the motif of the repentant rogue; thus, the selection of texts aims to provide an interdisciplinary and multicultural sample of sources while paying 1 attention to their historical and cultural specificity. In addition, this dissertation seeks to establish a dialogue between the fields of comparative literature and religious studies by investigating the ways in which medieval and early modern Muslim, Jewish and Christian writers use the framework of proto-picaresque and picaresque narratives to create discursively ambiguous texts, which, at one level, provide lighthearted entertainment to their audience, while, at another level, address serious questions of their respective religious milieux and invite their audiences to critically examine the uses and misuses of religious discourse.

The meaning of the Arabic word “ghafara” is to cover, to hide and from it comes the meaning “to excuse,” “to pardon,” “to remit” and “to forgive.” God does all these things. In the Qur’an, it is mentioned that God does not forgive the Shirk (without repentance) but He may forgive every other sin for whomsoever He wills (4:116). We must turn to God to seek His forgiveness. 2. Al-`Afuw (The Pardoner): This has another part of forgiveness. This name occurs in the Qur’an five times. Literally, the word ‘Afw means “to release,” “to heal,” “to restore,” “to remit.” Thus in relation to God, it means “to release us from the burden of punishment due to our sins and mistakes; to restore our honour after we have dishonoured ourselves by committing sins and making mistakes.” Sometimes in the Qur’an both names, Afuw and Ghafoor, come together.

    Religion and the Forgiving Personality Michael E. McCullough National Institute for Healthcare Research Everett L. Worthington, Jr. Virginia Commonwealth University ABSTRACT Forgiveness is a concept with deep religious roots. It is also a basic social and psychological phenomenon. In this article, we explore the links between forgiveness and religion by surveying how they are linked in the major monotheistic world religions, and how they appear to be linked empirically. In attempting to account for the current body of empirical findings, we propose four potential substantive and methodological explanations that should be explored in future studies. Because the concept of forgiveness is (a) both spiritual and social-psychological in nature, and (b) possibly linked to some measures of human health and well-being (concerns that have traditionally been of interest to both researchers in personality and researchers in religion), the concept of forgiveness could be an important common ground for future research on the interface of religion and personality. The concept of forgiveness has dual natures: a common one and a transcendent one. In the common, material world, forgiveness is just one more social-psychological phenomenon. She is also the Founder and instructor of Nourish Your Soul, a platform for Islamic education. 3 | Repentance in Islam: The Interdependence of Spirituality & Practice Abstract While the general notion of repentance may be familiar to most, the Islamic concept of repentance is far less familiar and is often the subject of misconceptions and doubt. Repentance plays a central role in Islam and is comprehensive in nature. Deeply rooted within the belief system, it manifests in multiple dimensions—as the core of Islamic theology (aqeedah), as a subject of jurisprudence or rulings (fiqh), ​ ​ ​ ​ and ultimately in practice as an act of worship (‘ibadah). Equally important are the ​ ​ spiritual and self-purification (tazkiyah) aspects of repentance which reside in the ​ ​ heart. This paper specifically addresses how to repent, with a focus on two key ​ dimensions of repentance (tawba)—the spiritual and the practical. It describes the ​ ​ necessary steps to tawba, its many benefits, and a number of commonly faced ​ ​ ​ obstacles. The paper discusses the symbiotic relationship between the spiritual and practical components. It further emphasizes the holistic nature and distinct features of tawba as a source of optimism for every sinner and believer alike, and as a way ​ of life, necessary for success in this world and in the Hereafter.
