Brighouse UK Abstract The first semi-solid casting process to be commercialized was thixocasting, where a pre-cast billet is re-heated to the semi-solid solid casting temperature. Advantages of thixocasting include the production of high quality components, while the main disadvantage is the higher cost associated with the production of the pre-cast billets. Commercial pressures have driven casters to examine a different approach to semi-solid casting, where the semi-solid slurry is generated directly from the liquid adjacent to a die casting machine. These processes are collectively referred to as rheocasting, and there are currently at least 15 rheocasting processes either in commercial production or under development around the world. This paper will describe technical aspects of both thixocasting and rheocasting, comparing the procedures used to generate the globular, semi-solid slurry. Two rheocasting processes will be examined in detail, one involved in the production of high integrity properties, while the other is focusing on reducing the porosity content of conventional die castings. Key Words Semi-solid casting, thixocasting, rheocasting, aluminum alloys 22 / 1 Introduction Semi-solid casting is a modified die casting process that reduces or eliminates the porosity present in most die castings [1] . Rather than using liquid metal as the feed material, semi-solid processing uses a higher viscosity feed material that is partially solid and partially liquid. The high viscosity of the semi-solid metal, along with the use of controlled die filling conditions, ensures that the semi-solid metal fills the die in a non-turbulent manner so that harmful gas porosity can be essentially eliminated. -

Housing, Credit and Brexit Ben Ansell∗ Abstract Dozens of articles have been drafted attempting to explain the narrow vic- tory for the Leave campaign in Britain’s EU referendum in June 2016. Yet, hitherto, and despite a general interest in ‘Left Behind’ commentary, few writ- ers have drawn attention to the connection between the Brexit vote and the distribution of British housing costs. This memo examines the connection be- tween house prices and both aggregate voting during the EU referendum and individual vote intention beforehand. I find a very strong connection at the local authority, ward, and individual level between house prices and support for the Remain campaign, one that even holds up within regions and local authorities. Preliminary analysis suggests that housing values reflect long-run social differences that are just as manifest in attitudes to immigration as Brexit. Local ‘ecologies of unease’ (Reeves and Gimpel, 2012) appear a crucial force behind Brexit. Most scholars have coalesced around an understanding of Brexit that to some extent mirrors that implicit in Theresa May’s quasi hard Brexit strategy - Brexit was caused by both economic and cultural forces, with opposition to the European Union based on concerns about immigration and of declining cultural and social status rather than economic deprivation or actual migration levels per se (Kaufmann, 2016). -

(3) Faculty of Engineering, Sinai University, Department of Mechanical Engineering. ABSTRACT This Paper presents a new ceramic casting mold made by gel casting using silica sol as a binder. The new ceramic mold is consisted of an alumina- mullite-zirconia matrix with the ratios of 38.332 wt. % alumina, 34.378 wt. % mullite, and 27.294 wt. % zirconia respectively, the slurry is mixed then the gelling agent is added and poured into the pattern. After gelation the mold is extracted and left to dry, then sintered. There are three main defects appear in the mold fabrication process. The 1st defect is the mold cracking, as a result of forced shrinkage of mold into pattern. The 2nd defect is the bad gelation behavior of mold, as a result of non equal gelling time. The last defect is mold surface cracks, due to increased silica ratio added to the mixture. As zirconia increased the bulk density and apparent porosity is increased, leading to higher mold permeability which is important to eliminate trapping of residual gases. The increased zirconia content decreases the micro hardness and the cold crushing strength, but increases the thermal shock resistance due to phase transformation during sintering. The ceramic mold is applicable for nodular cast iron so that the mold is hard enough to withstand the forces of spheroidal graphite formation when nodular cast iron is poured into the ceramic mold.
