ISBN-10: 0739112686, ISBN-13: 978-0739112687. $60.00. by Irwin Wall, Professor Emeritus, University of California, Riverside and Visiting Scholar, NYU Published by H-Diplo on 11 June 2007 nti-Americanism, Seth Armus reminds us, has long been a permanent feature of French cultural life; it is a cultural trope, an idée fixe, that exists independently as a mode of intellectual discourse quite independently of American government policies and behavior. Of course such behavior influences it strongly, and the recent crisis over Iraq has brought it once again to the fore. This revival has also stimulated an outpouring of studies, some of them extraordinary, and it should be said at the outset that Philippe Roger’s work, now available in English, has become an instant classic, required reading on the subject.1 Roger traces anti-Americanism back to the eighteenth century, when French naturalists believed that life in the Americas was of necessity savage, brutish, short, and destructive of civilization. He takes us through several critical periods in its development, from the early national period through the Civil and Spanish-American wars, when the specter of American imperialism first began to frighten Europeans, through the 1920s and 1930s, and the postwar period. The merit of Armus’s study is to focus in on one such critical moment, the period from 1930 to 1948, which in his telling became a defining moment, in which anti-Americanism developed into an obsession with some thinkers, a world-view and an ideology almost in itself. -

Tel Aviv University, 2005 A Dissertation presented to the Graduate Faculty of the University of Virginia in Candidacy for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of History University of Virginia July, 2016 © 2016 Nir Avissar Abstract The aim of this dissertation is to provide a critical history of French reportage photography in the decades following the Second World War, beginning with the Liberation in 1944 and ending in May ’68. During the Trente Glorieuses, reportage photography became an integral part of the media, which operated as the central platform for engaging the public in political discourse. My research explores how, during this era of mass communication, the photographic medium participated in the nation’s political life in concrete historical circumstances. In the course of this investigation, I inspect both the material, thematic, and formal strategies photographers employed to produce images in different political contexts, and the publication history of their works (who published their images, in what format, and for what purposes). The dissertation thus examines the role reportage photography played in promoting political discourse in France by visually engaging the most critical historical processes the nation was undergoing: modernization, democratization, and decolonization. At the same time, it also analyzes the reciprocal impact that changing political climate had on reportage photography. Specifically, it provides an historical account of the multiple causes that effected during the 1960s the displacement of humanist photography by photojournalism as the medium’s prominent current. -

This dissertation is submitted for the degree of! Doctor of Philosophy! !1 ! ! !2 Abstract! ! ! ! ! ! Neither communist, nor fascist, the personalist third way was an original attempt to remedy the malaise of liberal democracies in 1930s Europe. Personalism puts the emphasis on the human person – understood to be an individual in relation to others – as the foundation and aim of society. Yet, because of the impossibility of subjecting the human person to a systematic definition, personalism remains complex and multifaceted, to the extent that it might be best to speak of ‘personalisms’ in the plural. The various personalist movements that emerged in France in the 1930s are little known, and the current historiography in English misrepresents them. ! This dissertation is a study of the various personalist movements based in France in the 1930s, examining their spiritual research and political philosophy through the vantage point of Swiss writer Denis de Rougemont (1906-1985). In Rougemont lies the key to understanding the personalist groupings because he was the only thinker to remain active in the two foremost movements (Ordre Nouveau and Esprit) throughout the 1930s. The personalism of Ordre Nouveau was the most original, in both senses of the term. It deserves particular attention as an important political philosophy and an attempt to justify political and economic federalism in 1930s Europe. Whilst an Ordre Nouveau activist, Rougemont can be looked upon as the mediator and federator of personalisms in the 1930s. ! However, Rougemont’s particular contribution to personalist thought was more spiritual and theological than political or economic. -

Perhaps we are still discovering the domain of our invention just here, the domain where even we can still be original, probably as parodists of the world's history and as God's Merry-Andrews,—perhaps, though nothing else of the present may have a future, our laughter itself may have a future! (Nietzsche 166) The brief history of the Théâtre Alfred Jarry (TAJ), animated by Antonin Artaud, Roger Vitrac and Robert Aron in the fringe of the surrealist movement, has been adequately researched, if not very systematically.1 As guidelines, scholars generally use the provocatively formulated principles of the accompanying manifestoes.2 The TAJ's attempts at subverting theatrical and dramaturgical conventions find such vigorous expression in the pamphlets, composed (mostly) by Artaud, that they impose themselves automatically as a main point of reference. The hypothesis of this paper is that the very radicality of the TAJ programme may deflect the focus of interpretation. Therefore, its analysis will start out not from the manifestoes, but from the evidence of the performances (play-texts, reviews, photographs). Furthermore, it will concentrate on one central and technical question: in which different ways did the TAJ appropriate standard theatrical conventions and certain drama texts? Most research on this question so far has concentrated on Roger Vitrac's play Victor, ou les Enfants au pouvoir. We will strive to give a complete overview of the TAJ performances and the appropriations involved.
