Pdsa Dickin Medal Dm 70 CHIPS DM 70 PDSA DICKIN MEDAL CHIPS DM 70 “For bravery and devotion to duty during the US Army’s invasion of Sicily on 10 July 1943.” Date of Award: 15 January 2018 CHIPS’ STORY Chips, a Husky crossbreed, was posthumously awarded the PDSA Dickin Medal at the Churchill War Rooms on the 75th anniversary of the Casablanca Conference on 15 January 2018. He was one of 10,000 dogs that formed the Dogs for Defence force when the USA joined the second World War in December 1941. Following intensive training, Chips and his handler, Private Rowell, took part in covert operations behind enemy lines in French Morocco. When Churchill and Roosevelt met at the Casablanca Conference to develop the strategy for the rest of the war, Chips and his handler were part of the protection force guarding the leaders and he met both leaders during the event. “THE ENEMY SOLDIERS STAGGERED OUT OF THE HUT WITH CHIPS AT HIS THROAT.” It was during Operation Husky, the Allied invasion of Sicily, that Chips showed his true colours and proved what an exceptional animal he really was. As his platoon came ashore in pitch black conditions it came under heavy machine gun fire. While his colleagues dived for cover Chips ran straight towards a nearby hut where the machine gun was located. Almost immediately the firing stopped and one of the enemy soldiers staggered out of the hut with Chips at his throat. Private Rowell called Chips off before he killed the man and three more enemy soldiers quickly surrendered with their hands above their heads. Chips had grabbed the machine gun barrel in his mouth and pulled it from its stand before grabbing the machine gunner by the throat. Chips sustained a scalp wound and powder burns that needed treatment during this incredible act of bravery that without doubt, saved the lives of many of his platoon. Chips’ PDSA Dickin Medal citation reads: “For bravery and devotion to duty during the US Army’s invasion of Sicily on 10 July 1943.” DM THE PDSA DICKIN MEDAL The close relationship between humans and animals is rarely more profound than in times of conflict. Throughout history, animals have stood alongside humans in action and shown incredible bravery and devotion to duty when confronted with the horrors of war. Our founder, Maria Dickin, CBE, introduced the PDSA Dickin Medal on 2 December 1943, at the height of World War II. A tireless campaigner for animal welfare, Maria Dickin was determined to raise the status of animals in society and improve their care. The Medal was instituted to recognise outstanding acts of gallantry and devotion to duty displayed by animals serving with the Armed Forces or Civil Defence units in any theatre of war, throughout the world. Regarded worldwide as the animals’ Victoria Cross, the PDSA Dickin Medal is as inspirational and relevant today as it was 75 years ago. It is a fitting tribute to the gallant animals ‘who also served’ and whose remarkable contributions helped save countless lives. The highest honour any animal can receive, the Medal stands as testament to the Diligent, Resolute, Fearless, and Relentless qualities shown by animals in action.
