Long has the Order of the Golden Quills watched and studied the secret places and races of the world: hollow faerie hills and forests, high giant- made mountains, bejeweled dwarvish caverns, deep seas of the merfolk. We have collected much lore, and now we ask you to join us. Relations with the merfolk have been especially strained of late. Pollution of the world's waters and depletion of fish populations have led to regrettable conflicts between merfolk and humans. While most humans remain blithely unaware of the damage they do to merfolk, the merfolk's displeasure can be felt by all: tsunamis, tropical storms, hurricanes, and coastal floods all are evidence of their growing displeasure with land folk. The Order feels the time has come to remind humans of their sea-cousins and their underwater world, a world humans seem to have forgotten. By sharing these Secret Histories, the Order of the Golden Quills spreads knowledge and understanding, fostering peace in all realms and between all good people. The Secret History of Mermaids by Ari Berk. The Secret History of Mermaids by Ari Berk is great if you are looking for a mermaid book for middle readers and up. Not that adults can't enjoy it but the information is offered in bits and pieces similar to Wizardology and Dragonology. The children in my life adore these books and most adults have affection for them. The Secret History of Mermaids has enough information to spark a search for the full stories as well as a nice diversity of mermaids beyond the standard. Book description from the publisher: Since ancient times, seafarers and coast-dwellers the world over have reported encounters with merpeople. Variously known as Finfolk, Dinny Mara, Nereids, Blue Men, and Merrymaids, merfolk have been the source of both gifts and disasters for humankind. Now a lavishly illustrated resource offers insight into the lives, origins, language, and magic of these elusive peoples. Special features include: — paper novelties — including sundry flaps, booklets, and gatefolds — a lavish cover with foil, embossing, and glittery jewels — an elegant tassel dangling from the spine. The Secret History of Mermaids. For centuries the Order of the Golden Quill has been collecting information about fairies, hobgoblins, giants, and the merfolk. For centuries they have been keeping this information a secret, but they now appreciate that perhaps the time has come to tell the world about these magical creatures. The world’s oceans are terribly polluted due to human behavior and fish populations have been affected. As a result, tensions between humans and the merfolk is on the rise. The hope is that if we humans better understand the merfolk, if we better appreciate their culture, language, traditions, history, and “their unparalleled understanding of the deep,” then we will be more willing to treat them with the respect and compassion that they deserve. If we all -humans and magical creatures and beings alike - read this book, then perhaps we can build bridges of understanding and peace between us. The creators of this book begin by talking about the origins of the merfolk. There are many stories about how the merfolk came into being. The first mermaid mentioned by ancient humans was Atargatis. It is said that her children swam to all the seas of the world and their descendants became the mermaids, nereids, finfolk, sea morgans and other sea peoples. Next we learn about the many forms that the merfolk take. Traditionally the merfolk are depicted as having a torso and head that is humanlike and the tail of a fish. In the main this is an accurate description of the merfolk, but species of merfolk have adapted to their environments and have changed over time so that there are many singular differences between them. Some of them really do look very human from the waist up, while others barely resemble humans at all. Like humans, many of the merfolk live in villages or towns, and their underwater settlements do resemble those of humans. Other merfolk prefer to inhabit underwater caves and crevasses. Though merfolk often have close relationships with animals such as eels and dolphins, they prefer not to interact with humans. This is understandable, as humans often seek to capture, imprison and display merfolk. However, the merfolk do trade with other races, in particular with dwarves and elves, who give them blue and green gems, getting pearls, coral and even songs in return. The merfolk are skilled in the arts of magic. They create powerful spells and make magical objects such as mirrors and caps that occasionally fall into human hands. It is not wise to tamper with merfolk-made magical items. They can cause a great deal of harm when they are in the hands of individuals who do not understand them. The author of this excellent volume also tell us about Good Folk of the Ocean Community, Seal Folk, Merfolk Artifacts, Songs of the Sea, and much more. People who want to better understand the merfolk are going to be delighted with this beautifully presented and information-packed volume. There are annotated illustrations and diagrams on every spread, and some sections include maps and interactive elements such as mini books and fold out pages. 1 Cailleach – old woman Altough the Cailleach lives in various mountain homes every year she comes to the Coire Bhreacain (Cauldren of the Plaid) to wash her massive yellow plaid in the swirling waters in order to summon the cold winds as Scotia’s Winter goddess. During archeological excavations in 1880 a figure of an ancient goddess was discovered in the peat bogs of Scotland, a figure who 2,500 years ago stood near the shore of Loch Leven as a symbol of an ancient religion or deity that has now been lost to time. Today she is known as the Ballachulish Woman & is a figure who stands at almost five feet tall & carved from a single piece of alder wood, her eyes are two quartz pebbles which even today, have a remarkable ability to draw the attention to the face of this mysterious relic. Although the identity of the Ballachulish Woman still remains a mystery many have speculated as to who this figure represented, there are some who believe that she is a depiction of a deity known as the Cailleach Bheithir, an ancient goddess of winds & 2 storms, also known as the Winter Hag, who had associations with a nearby mountain called Beinn a’Bheithir. (Hill of the thunderbolt) Another theory is that she could represent a goddess of the straits, this is due to the figures location near the straits where Loch Levan meets the sea, & was a deity that prehistoric travellers would make offerings too in an attempt to secure their safety while travelling dangerous waters.

  • Just out of Reach: an Ethnographic Theory of Magic and Rationalisation
Just Out of Reach: An Ethnographic Theory of Magic and Rationalisation Richard D.G. Irvine and Theodoros Kyriakides To appear in Implicit Religion Abstract: Perceived in their ideal forms, rationalisation and magic might seem to oppose one another. In this paper, however, rather than placing these forces in sterile opposition, we instead explore the social and relational dynamics through which rationalisation - the dominant epistemological force of modernity – in certain cases provides the conditions of doubt, opacity, and unknowability that makes magical thinking manifest in the everyday mundane. We explore such theoretical suggestions through ethnographic research conducted in Orkney and Cyprus. By examining connections between rationalisation and magic as these historically unfolded in these two different island settings, we initially provide a depiction of how the project of rationalisation led to the decline of magic in our two fieldsites. Then, by focusing on everyday manifestations of magical thinking, we nevertheless proceed to showcase how rationalisation and magic appear to sustain one other through an unresolved, generative tenson, emergent of the incapacity of the former to fully sublate the latter in its requirement to ‘know’ the world. The trajectory of rationalisation means that there is nothing unknowable in the world, and yet, from the position of any given person, there is no knowable whole. It remains out of reach. We conclude by discussing how the tensions inherent in the relation between rationalisation and magic allow for further theorising about the dimension of unknowing that permeates contemporary public epistemologies and subjectivities. Keywords: magic, rationalisation, epistemology, memory, Orkney, Cyprus Magic and the Ambivalence of Rationalisation It would be fair to say that magic has an awkward relationship with rationalisation.
