Singing the Memory of Sepharad: Traditional Sephardic Song and its Interpretation Katerina Garcia Abstract The transmission and interpretation of Sephardic songs is inextricably linked to Sephardic culture, and to this day represents a powerful marker of identity. It is the aim of this article to first contextualise traditional Sephardic song by outlining a brief introduction into the cultural background of the Sephardic Diaspora. Subsequently, I will introduce the various secular forms and genres of Sephardic traditional song, focusing on the modes of their interpretation by both contemporary Sephardic and non-Sephardic musicians. In doing so, I will propose a typology of performance approaches, with regards to the role that the re-imagining of Sepharad as a mythical land of the past plays in this process. Keywords: Sephardic music, Judeo-Spanish song, interpretation Introduction The Sephardic Jews, or Sephardim1, represent the second largest ethnic division within Judaism, the first one being the Ashkenazim, or German and Eastern-European Jews. In the narrowest sense of the term, Sephardim are the descendants of the Jews expelled from the Iberian Peninsula at the end of the 15th century (Spain, 1492; Portugal, 1496), and those who assimilated culturally to them in the main areas of Sephardic settlement post-1492 The areas of the Sephardic diaspora are indicated in Figure 1: Figure 1 – The Sephardic Diaspora (Sephiha and Weinstock 1997) Ethnomusicology Ireland 5 (2017) Garcia 172 For the present discussion of traditional Sephardic music, only the areas of the Eastern Mediterranean (incl. the present-day state of Israel), the Balkan Peninsula and North Africa (the former Ottoman Empire) are relevant, as it is here that a specific Sephardic language and culture develop. -

Article / Artículo / Artigo An Ethnomusicological Approach to Orientalism: The Musical and Historical Study of the Moors and Christians in Villena (Spain) Luis Gimenez Amoros, University of the Western Cape, Cape Town, South Africa [email protected] Abstract This article examines the historical and musical forms of Orientalism found in the festival popularly known as Moros y cristianos (the Moors and Christians) in Spain and, in particular, the town of Villena in the province of Alicante. Since the 12th century, this traditional festival is mostly celebrated in towns along the eastern Mediterranean coast of Spain which includes Villena. The contextualization of this festival through Orientalism provides an understanding of the exoticization of Muslim-Spanish music through the música festera (the music composed for Moros y cristianos), a musical style with more than four thousand pieces composed by more than three hundred Spanish composers over the course of the last two centuries. This article reveals by conducting ethnomusicological studies using Orientalism, there is a possibility of reconsidering the colonial narrative embedded in the cultural and musical symbolism of música festera. She knows she is the worthy heir to her father’s art so now it is no longer Estrella Morente in concert but Morente in Concert. Her voice, difficult to classify, has the gift of deifying any musical register she proposes. Although strongly influenced by her father’s art, Estrella likes to include her own things: fados, coplas, sevillanas, blues, jazz… ESTRELLA can’t be described described with words. Looking at her, listening to her and feeling her is the only way to experience her art in an intimate way. Her voice vibrates between the ethereal and the earthly like a presence that mutates between reality and the beyond. All those who have the chance to spend a while in her company will never forget it for they know they have been part of an inexplicable phenomenon. Tonight she offers us the best of her art. From the subtle simplicity of the festive songs of her childhood to the depths of a yearned-for love. The full panorama of feelings, the entire range of sensations and colours – all the experiences of the woman of today, as well as the woman of long ago, are found in Estrella’s voice. -

The general objectives of GEO IP is: 1) to found the Galata Electroacoustic Orchestra, a small group orchestra based on an idea of live collective composition; 2) to merge of the Western Classical tradition of score- based music and the Improvisational techniques, in particular of Turkish Maqam Music. As the dialogue between the three Countries (Turkey, Spain and Italy) involved in the IP is an important objective for GEO, we adopted the sealing map ( portolano ) as a guide metaphor for the project (when a ship docks, the goods – in our case: the musical products – from one country are unloaded and goods from another country are loaded). Oposiciones y concursos MINISTERIO DE EDUCACIÓN, CULTURA Y DEPORTE 9452 Orden ECD/1752/2015, de 25 de agosto, por la que se aprueban los temarios que han de regir en los procedimientos de ingreso, acceso y adquisición de nuevas especialidades en el Cuerpo de Catedráticos de Música y Artes Escénicas en las especialidades vinculadas a las enseñanzas de música y de danza. Aparte de las establecidas en la Ley 7/2007, de 12 de abril, del Estatuto Básico del Empleado Público, la disposición adicional sexta de la Ley Orgánica 2/2006, de 3 de mayo, de Educación, establece que, además de las recogidas en la Ley 30/1984, de 2 de agosto, de Medidas para la Reforma de la Función Pública, son bases del régimen estatutario de los funcionarios públicos docentes las reguladas por la propia Ley Orgánica 2/2006, de 3 de mayo, y la normativa que la desarrolla, para el ingreso y la movilidad entre los cuerpos docentes, encomendando al Gobierno su desarrollo reglamentario en aquellos aspectos básicos que sean necesarios para garantizar el marco común básico de la función pública docente. Las especialidades para impartir las enseñanzas superiores de Música y de Danza por el cuerpo de funcionarios docentes en centros públicos han sido determinadas en el Real Decreto 427/2013, de 14 de junio, por el que se establecen las especialidades docentes del Cuerpo de Catedráticos de Música y Artes Escénicas vinculadas a las enseñanzas de Música y de Danza.
