Awards for teachers in designated shortage areas in Iowa. Applicants must have graduated in the top 25 percent of their teacher preparation programs.

These programs administered by Iowa College Aid help to remove educational barriers for low-income Iowans, complementing our agency’s mission, the Future Ready Iowa mission and the Governor’s education goals for the state of Iowa: GEAR UP IOWA Federal grant that prepares low-income students to succeed in college • 9,119 students served overall; 6,884 currently in program • $11 million-plus dedicated for scholarships • $22.4 million in federal funds plus $22.4 million in matching funds • 20+ partnerships with colleges and universities LCAN GRANT SERIES Local College Access Network partnerships to raise communities’ educational attainment • Iowa College Aid provides funding, training and technical assistance • LCANs align the efforts of education, business, government and nonprofits • 15 communities have been awarded grants COURSE TO COLLEGE School-based initiatives that guide students and families through the college-going process • Iowa College Aid provides free data and materials to schools • Cultivates a college-going culture from early awareness through transition to higher education • All 343 public high schools in Iowa are participating in 2018-19 COURSE TO COLLEGE CORPS AmeriCorps and VISTA members, hosted by Iowa College Aid, working in communities and schools • Work one-on-one with students on FAFSA and transition from high school to college • Help schools develop and expand college-access programming • Currently in seven communities IOWA COLLEGE & CAREER READINESS ACADEMY Interactive online courses for counselors, administrators and other education professionals • 112 people enrolled in inaugural courses in fall 2018 (second session opened due to high demand) • 60 enrolled in courses that began in January 2019 • Next session begins in March 2019 STATE AUTHORIZATION Iowa College Aid is the agency that authorizes colleges and universities to operate in Iowa, whether at a physical campus or online. In a rapidly changing postsecondary landscape—school closures, acquisitions, conversions from for- profit to not-for-profit—we ensure consumer protection for Iowa students. Through our authorization procedures, we hold out-of-state schools that serve Iowans to the same criteria as in-state schools.
