CLA/048/AD/10/003 of Charles Thain, 1857-58: Printed 1858 account of trial of Christian Sattler at the Central Criminal Court (beginning 7 Jan 1858) for the wilful murder of Charles Thain, a City of London who died on 4 Dec 1857. [Xerox copy from Central Criminal Court Sessions Paper (Carden, Mayor) 3rd. Session held 4 Jan 1858 & following days: minutes of evidence published 21 Jan 1858; Vol.XLVII Part 219 pp.247-261. This series of printed proceedings for trials is listed under Sessions Papers (Printed) in Main Subject Index]. Sattler appeared briefly at Mansion House Justice Room but case was proceeded with at Police Court (p.256) where he was presumably committed for trial at C.C.C. Thain died at Guy's Hospital on 4 Dec 1857 (p.254) but his name does not appear in Index to Corners Inquests (Southwark) 1838-60 in C.L.R.O. References to Thain's murder were not found in indexes to Common Council minutes of this period, 1857-58. Former Reference: PD.133.16

CLA/048/PS/02/001 Ancient Manner and Order of Setting the 1585 access by written permission only Watch. eng Sample images are available to view online via the Player and show the 'just number of cressets [lights] for the service of the marching watch'. The phrase ‘Watch and Ward’, which long described the police system of the City, referred respectively to the night and day guard that was undertaken by the watchmen. The system seems to have been regularised, if not established, by the Statuta Civitatis London of 1285.
