Introduction In this book I have not attempted to write the conventional biography of a canonized saint, but a study of Italian history centered in the work and personality of one of the most wonderful women that ever lived. While devoting my attention mainly to Catherine’s own work and influence upon the politics of her age, I have endeavored at the same time to make my book a picture of certain aspects, religious and political, of the fourteenth century in Italy. In this undertaking, I have been aided greatly by the manuscripts still preserved of Catherine’s letters, manuscripts full of unpublished matter that has been unaccountably neglected, having apparently escaped the notice of all of her previous biographers and editors. This material throws light upon every aspect of the saint’s genius and has enabled me, at many points, to correct erroneously accepted ideas about the events of her life and the order of her writings. From the very beginning, the biographical and historical value of Catherine’s letters has been, to a considerable extent, impaired by copyists (and editors who followed them) omit- ting or suppressing passages that appeared to them to be of only temporary interest, or not tending immediately toward edification. A certain number appear to have been deliberately expurgated, in cases where the writer’s burning words seemed likely to startle the susceptibilities of the faithful. This process seems to date back to the generation that immediately followed that of Catherine’s original disciples. A striking instance of this editorial suppression is seen in a certain letter that Aldo Manuzio (the editor of the second 3 RoadtoSienaFormat.indd 3 6/16/09 11:54:52 AM the road to siena edition of Catherine’s letters, published in Venice in 1500) intro- duces with the rubric: “To one whose name it is better not to write, because of certain words used in the letter.

Abstract This project looks at the career of St. Catherine of Siena and argues that without the relationships she had with her closest followers, who provided social connections and knowledge of the operation of political power, she would not have been able to pursue as active or wide-ranging a career. The examination of Catherine’s relationships, the careers of her followers, and the ways she made use of this network of support, relies mainly on Catherine’s extant letters. Most prior research on St. Catherine focuses on her spirituality and work with the papacy, which leaves out the influence of her local, political environment and the activities of her associates. This work examines Catherine’s place on Siena’s political landscape and within the system of Italian politics more generally. The Holy See PASTORAL VISIT TO BRESCIA AND CONCESIO EUCHARISTIC CONCELEBRATION HOMILY OF HIS HOLINESS BENEDICT XVI Paul VI Square - Brescia, Italy Sunday, 8 November 2009 Dear Brothers and Sisters, I have great joy in being able to break the Bread of the Word of God and of the Eucharist with you here, in the heart of the Diocese of Brescia, where the Servant of God Giovanni Battista Montini, Pope Paul VI was born and educated in his youth. I greet you all with affection and thank you for your warm welcome! In particular I thank Bishop Luciano Monari, for his words to me at the beginning of the celebration and with him I greet the Cardinals, Bishops, priests and deacons, the men and women religious and all the pastoral workers. I thank the Mayor for his words and his gift, and the other civil and military Authorities. I address a special thought to the sick who have gathered in the Cathedral. At the heart of the Liturgy of the Word this Sunday the 32nd in Ordinary Time we find the figure of the poor widow or, more precisely, we find her gesture when she dropped her last coins into the collection box of the Temple treasury. Thanks to Jesus' attentive look it has become the proverbial "widow's mite" and indeed is synonymous with the generosity of those who give unsparingly the little they possess. However, I would like first of all to emphasize the importance of the atmosphere in which this Gospel episode takes place, that is, the Temple of Jerusalem, the religious centre of the People of Israel and the heart of its whole life.

Saint Geltrude Comensoli SAINT OF THE DAY 18-02-2021 The Eucharist was "Heaven on earth" to Saint Geltrude Comensoli (1847-1903), founder of the Institute of the Sacramentine Sisters which was consecrated to the perpetual adoration of the Blessed Sacrament and born from her love for Christ. Worshipping God in the Eucharistic Presence was the source of Geltrude's charity and the constant object of her meditations, which were often addressed to the mysteries of the Rosary: "The first adoration began at the cave in Bethlehem. The Holy Virgin and Saint Joseph prostrated themselves for the first time before the Most Holy Humanity of the Incarnate Word". The fifth of ten children, seven of whom died in their infancy, Saint Geltrude was born in Bienno, a small town near Brescia [Northern Italy], and was baptised, on the day of her birth, with the name of Catherine. As she wrote in her diary, when she was five Jesus instilled in her heart, "a great desire to love Him much, and He kept teaching me what I had to do to please Him and be His own". The little girl often meditated on the sacrifice of Christ ("I'm thinking", she replied when asked what she was doing) and on the sense of sin, the horror of which she could perceive through her intimate union with God. At seven years old, in fact, she was told by her mother that it was time for her first Confession: "I was astonished, and replied that I had been going to Confession every Saturday for some time".
