AWED Newsletters: 2020 Back Through 2009 AWED Newsletters: 2020 back through 2009 (17,000+ Studies, Reports & Articles on Energy, Environment, Education, etc.) The Alliance for Wise Energy Decisions (AWED) is an informal coalition of individuals and organizations interested in defending citizen’s rights by improving national, state, and local technical policies, worldwide. Our premise is that technical matters (like climate change, our energy options, etc.) should be addressed by using Real Science. A key element of AWED’s efforts is public education. Towards that end, every two weeks we put together a detailed Newsletter digest of recent relevant articles, reports and studies, to try to balance what is found in the mainstream media about a wide range of national-interest issues. We believe that citizens can’t effectively defend their rights unless they are educated about the societal options we have. To review and research the last 11± years of our Newsletter, see this. The purpose of this extensive compilation is to make it easier to search for pertinent studies, reports and articles on a specific topic (e.g. wind energy interference with the military). It is advisable to try multiple search words — e.g. military, army, navy, etc. (Search terms are case insensitive on this PDF document.) Note 1: The Newsletters complement what’s on the AWED website: WiseEnergy.org. Note 2: For links to other excellent sources of articles on Energy and Environmental matters please see the “Current News” page on our website. See also our list of quality books on Climate Change and Energy. The Week That Was: 2020-04-11 (April 11, 2020) Brought to You by SEPP (www.SEPP.org) The Science and Environmental Policy Project Quote of the Week: “In questions of science, the authority of a thousand is not worth the humble reasoning of a single individual.” – Galileo [International Space Hall of Fame] In Memory S. Fred Singer (Sept. 27, 1924 – April 6, 2020) A Quest for Knowledge: Show me your best data. (physical evidence) Fred Singer’s journey through physical science was marked by endless curiosity and the belief that physical evidence (data), not theory, were needed to resolve controversies in science. At the age of 16 he tackled the difficult Maxwell Equations that are the foundation of electromagnetism, of which visible light is a part. Singer’s Ph.D. thesis at Princeton was on then- poorly understood cosmic rays. His advisor was John Wheeler, who had worked with Niels Bohr in explaining nuclear fission with quantum physics. (All Wheeler’s students were a very exceptional cadre, including the Nobel laureate Richard Feynman.) Earlier, Bohr had a noted public dispute with Albert Einstein on quantum physics, after Einstein objected to the probabilistic view used, making precise prediction impossible. Bohr’s views are generally accepted and the great admiration he and Einstein had for each other remained. This is an outstanding example of scientists disagreeing publicly, without personal accusations, which are too common today. Singer was a pioneer in exploration of space, particularly the upper reaches of the atmosphere. He measured characteristics of cosmic radiation in the upper atmosphere, and discovered, or co- discovered, upper-atmospheric ozone, and the equatorial ‘electrojet current’ which intensifies the geomagnetic field.

  • Transnational Media Events
TRANSNATIONAL MEDIATRANSNATIONAL EVENTS In September 2005, a newspaper in Denmark published 12 cartoons depicting Mohammed, the holy Prophet of Islam. Soon after publication, these pictures became part of various events, political projects and diplomatic action. All over the world, the cartoons – or interpretations of them – were connected to dis- cursive struggles that pre-existed their drawing and publication. The cartoon event thus extended well beyond its immediate dramatic phase of spring 2006, both into the past and the future, and became at least a small landmark case of post-9/11 global media history. TRANSNATIONAL MEDIA EVENTS In this book, a community of international media researchers collects some of the lessons learned and questions provoked and offered by media coverage of The MOHAMMED CARTOONS and the the Mohammed cartoons in 16 countries, ranging from Denmark, Egypt and Argentina to Pakistan and Canada. The book looks at the coverage of the car- IMAGINED CLASH of CIVILIZATIONS toons and related incidents through a number of conceptual lenses: political spin, free speech theory, communication rights, the role of visuals and images in global communication, Orientalism and its counter-discourses, media’s rela- tions to immigration policy, and issues of integration. Through this approach, the book aims at a nuanced understanding of the cartoon controversy itself as well as at more general insights into the role of the media in contemporary transnational and transcultural relations. Economic and political weapon systems are being pointed at the United States at record levels all while Wall Street firms are investing in the Chinese Communist Party with your money! This is a dynamic that must be countered by Americans now. A closer look at the NSIC Institute and how Americans can “weaponize their money” to align with their values and biblical principles. • Green Illusions Is Not a Litany of Despair
“In this terrific book, Ozzie Zehner explains why most current approaches to the world’s gathering climate and energy crises are not only misguided but actually counterproductive. We fool ourselves in innumerable ways, and Zehner is especially good at untangling sloppy thinking. Yet Green Illusions is not a litany of despair. It’s full of hope—which is different from false hope, and which requires readers with open, skeptical minds.”— David Owen, author of Green Metropolis “Think the answer to global warming lies in solar panels, wind turbines, and biofuels? Think again. In this thought-provoking and deeply researched critique of popular ‘green’ solutions, Zehner makes a convincing case that such alternatives won’t solve our energy problems; in fact, they could make matters even worse.”—Susan Freinkel, author of Plastic: A Toxic Love Story “There is no obvious competing or comparable book. Green Illusions has the same potential to sound a wake-up call in the energy arena as was observed with Silent Spring in the environment, and Fast Food Nation in the food system.”—Charles Francis, former director of the Center for Sustainable Agriculture Systems at the University of Nebraska “This is one of those books that you read with a yellow marker and end up highlighting most of it.”—David Ochsner, University of Texas at Austin Green Illusions Our Sustainable Future Series Editors Charles A. • Gerald R. Ford Oral History Project Peter Mcpherson Interviewed by Richard Norton Smith July 22, 2010
Gerald R. Ford Oral History Project Peter McPherson Interviewed by Richard Norton Smith July 22, 2010 McPherson: I knew Ford growing up. He and my father were friends and I saw him from time to time. I saw President Ford many times when I was working for him as Deputy Director of the Presidential Personnel. At those meetings I developed some understanding of President Ford’s decision making. Smith: Excellent. McPherson: I also saw President Ford when I was Jim Baker’s deputy in the President’s fight for the nomination in 1976. Baker was responsible for “delegate hunting” for Ford at the convention. Smith: That’s gold. I mean, all of this is gold. Let’s talk about West Michigan, because it is a distinctive place. One senses it has changed considerably over the years. The influence of the Dutch, and the Christian Reformed Church were clearly significant. Sometimes, there’s a semi-comical element - the stories about people buying a Sunday paper on Saturday and not reading it until Monday. I’m trying to get a sense of what made West Michigan stand out. Was it not the place that most influenced Gerald Ford; and why were they such a good match during those years where he was in the Congress? McPherson: The Dutch were a cultural influence since they arrived in large numbers around the turn of the century. My grandmother came from Holland about 1900 when her father came to Grand Rapids to work in the furniture factories. She married a local farmer, my grandfather, and so I was always very aware of the Dutch community, though my grandmother became a Methodist when she married.

  • How Sports Help to Elect Presidents, Run Campaigns and Promote Wars."
Abstract: Daniel Matamala In this thesis for his Master of Arts in Journalism from Columbia University, Chilean journalist Daniel Matamala explores the relationship between sports and politics, looking at what voters' favorite sports can tell us about their political leanings and how "POWER GAMES: How this can be and is used to great eect in election campaigns. He nds that -unlike soccer in Europe or Latin America which cuts across all social barriers- sports in the sports help to elect United States can be divided into "red" and "blue". During wartime or when a nation is under attack, sports can also be a powerful weapon Presidents, run campaigns for fuelling the patriotism that binds a nation together. And it can change the course of history. and promote wars." In a key part of his thesis, Matamala describes how a small investment in a struggling baseball team helped propel George W. Bush -then also with a struggling career- to the presidency of the United States. Politics and sports are, in other words, closely entwined, and often very powerfully so.
