Warum all die Schmerzen? Listening to him I wondered if he was really only 14 years old like he said. From that moment on, he continued to open up. He was a kid but also a born actor, remarkably capable of comprehending direction. Only in the midst of his 14 years, but I’ve met few actors as professional as him. BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI TEA FALCO in der Rolle der OLIVIA points of view. We would never argue.” I ended up putting that line in the movie. She’s really a very special girl. BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI Son of poet Attilio Bertolucci, Bernardo Bertolucci was born in Parma on March 16th, 1941. His family moved to Rome and Bernardo attended the College of Liberal Arts. In 1961, he served as Pier Paolo Pasolini’s first assistant director for Accattone. Bertolucci made his directorial debut with La commare secca (The Grim Reaper), based on a subject by Pasolini. In 1964, he directed Prima della rivoluzione (Before the Revolution), a personal essay with which he begins to develop the subject of existential and political ambiguity which will continue in his movies in the ‘70s. The scandalous Last Tango in Paris marked the beginning of an enormous success which will continue with the historical epics Novecento (1900) and The Last Emperor, winner of nine Academy Awards. In the ‘90s, he returned to shoot in Italy with Stealing Beauty and Besieged. In 2003 he directed The Dreamers, a nostalgic return to 1968 Paris. Shortly after The Dreamers, severe back pain and several operations, rehabilitations and relapses prevented Bertolucci following through on any film. Every project, some very ambitious with big international casts, had to be shelved due to his medical condition. Io e Te (Me and You) is Bertolucci’s first feature in 10 years, his first feature in Italian in 30 years. Bertolucci recently received a special Cannes Palme d’Or d’Honneur, a Venice Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement, and full retrospectives at London’s BFI and New York’s MOMA. • A Continuation of Myth: the Cinematic Representation of Mythic American Innocence in Bernardo Bertolucci’S Last Tango in Paris and the Dreamers
A CONTINUATION OF MYTH: THE CINEMATIC REPRESENTATION OF MYTHIC AMERICAN INNOCENCE IN BERNARDO BERTOLUCCI’S LAST TANGO IN PARIS AND THE DREAMERS Joanna Colangelo A Thesis Submitted to the Graduate College of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of The requirements for the degree of MASTER OF ARTS December 2007 Committee: Carlo Celli, Advisor Philip Hardy ii ABSTRACT Carlo Celli, Advisor The following thesis aims to track the evolution and application of certain fundamental American cultural mythologies across international borders. While the bulk of my discussion will focus on the cycle of mythic American innocence, I will pay fair attention to the sub-myths which likewise play vital roles in composing the broad myth of American innocence in relation to understanding American identities – specifically, the myth of the Virgin West (or America-as-Eden), the yeoman farmer and individualism. When discussing the foundation of cultural American mythologies, I draw specifically from the traditional myth-symbol writers in American Studies. Those works which I reference are: Henry Nash Smith’s, Virgin Land: The American West as Symbol and Myth, Leo Marx’s, The Machine in the Garden: Technology and the Pastoral Ideal in America and R.W.B. Lewis’s, The American Adam: Innocence, Tragedy, and Tradition in the Nineteenth Century. I focus much of my discussion on the applicability of the myth of innocence, rather than the validity of the actual myth throughout history. In this sense, I follow the myth as a cycle of innocence lost and regained in American culture – as an ideal which can never truly reach its conclusion for as long as America is invested in two broad definitions of innocence: the American Adam and the Noble Savage.

COUCH AND SCREEN An Additional Lens Bernardo Bertolucci in conversation with Andrea Sabbadini __________________________________________________________ The following is an edited extract from a public conversation between the film director, Bernardo Bertolucci and Andrea Sabbadini, a member of the British Psychoanalytical Society, at the Großen Festsaal der Universität in Vienna. This conversation, entitled 'Psychoanalysis: the eleventh muse', was organised by the Sigmund Freud Museum and took place on the anniversary of Freud's birth, 6th May 1997. A video tape of the complete conversation (which was in English) can be obtained from the Sigmund Freud-Gesellschaft, Bergasse 19, A-1090 Wein, Austria. The cost of the video is 490 Austrian Schillings (£24.) and can be paid for by bankers draft or credit card. For further information telephone (+43) 1 319-15-960. Bernardo Bertolucci The sixties were extremely important for cinema, for myself and all my friends who started to make movies in the sixties. Our movies were an investigation about the nature of cinema. We were making movies that we were proud to know that the audiences weren't going to see. At the end of the sixties I started to think that there was something wrong. I thought my movies were like monologues because nobody went, just critics or friends or relatives, and I started to think I have to break this kind of curse. I wanted to have feedback from the people who see my movies. So my desire was to pass from monologue to dialogue. That is exactly the moment when I found myself starting my psychoanalysis, in 1969.

Undergoing psychoanalysis in the 1960s lefthim fascinated by dreams and their resemblance to cinematic sequences. However, he declared that he could not bring together his interests in politics and aesthetics. For me it’s very difficult to succeed in mixing together the idea of beauty that I have as a moral factanda reduction of reality in political terms, exactly because I think they are two irreconcilable things. (Cited by Purdon, 1971: 7) The Dreamers finally realised his long-standing ambition to make a film dealing with the events ofParisin 1968. Much more than a mere reconstruction of those events, this was to become the Bertolucci film that wove together sex, psychoanalysis, memory, dreaming, revolution and filmic style in a rich tapestry. Bertolucci always wanted to make cinema new and strange to eye, ear and mind. After Il conformista (1970), he strove to make his films innovatory to the degree that they should attract close attention fromhis audiences, yet not be inaccessible. The Dreamers, no exception to this principle, opens on a travelling close shot of steel girders through which we are descending. This structure cannot be identified until the duration of the descent reveals it must be the Eiffel Tower. We get an angle on it quite other than what tourists enjoy when taking the view across Paris: it is made all the stranger by Jimi Hendrix’s roaring music, spatially and emotionally huge, accompanying the descent.

Robin Beauchamp geeft hiervan de volgende definitie: ‘[Film music is able to] convey inward transformation without the need for exposition or dramatic visual gestures.

  • Synopsis Cast Credits Alexander Payne on I Knew Her Well
Alexander Payne presents a film by Antonio I Knew Pietrangeli starring Stefania Her Well Sandrelli Synopsis Following the gorgeous, seemingly liberated Adriana (Divorce Italian Style’s Stefania Sandrelli) as she chases her dreams in the Rome of La dolce vita, I Knew Her Well is at once a delightful immersion in the popular music and style of Italy in the sixties and a biting critique of its sexual politics and the culture of celebrity. Over a series of intimate episodes, just about every one featuring a different man, a new hairstyle, and an outfit to match, the unsung Italian master Antonio Pietrangeli, working from a script he cowrote with Ettore Scola, composes a deft, seriocomic character study that never strays from its complicated central figure.I Knew Her Well is a thrilling rediscovery, by turns funny, tragic, and altogether jaw-dropping. Janus Films is proud to present the U.S. theatrical premiere of a new 4K digital restoration undertaken by the Criterion Collection in partnership with the Cineteca di Bologna. Alexander Payne on I Knew Her Well My favorite national cinemas, other than American, are Japanese and Italian from the forties to the seventies—and particularly from the fifties and sixties. As one continues to dig, one finds in this period an inexhaustible supply of gems, and I Knew Her Well is nothing short of pay dirt. It stands with La dolce vita, Il sorpasso, and Michelangelo Antonioni’s trilogy as a brilliant—and brilliantly entertaining—document of Italy’s contradictions in the second decade after the war, and, like Antonioni, Pietrangeli put women at the center of his films.
