    A Sociocultural Analysis of Korean Sport for International Development Initiatives Dongkyu Na Thesis submitted to the University of Ottawa in partial Fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Human Kinetics School of Human Kinetics Faculty of Health Sciences University of Ottawa © Dongkyu Na, Ottawa, Canada, 2021 Korean Sport for International Development ii Abstract This dissertation focuses on the following questions: 1) What is the structure of the Korean sport for international development discourse? 2) How are the historical transformations of particular rules of formation manifested in the discourse of Korean sport for international development? 3) What knowledge, ideas, and strategies make up Korean sport for international development? And 4) what are the ways in which these components interact with the institutional aspirations of the Korean government, directed by the official development assistance goals, the foreign policy and diplomatic agenda, and domestic politics? To address these research questions, I focus my analysis on the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) and its 30 years of expertise in designing and implementing sport and physical activity–related programs and aid projects. For this research project, I collected eight different sets of KOICA documents published from 1991 to 2017 as primary sources and two different sets of supplementary documents including government policy documents and newspaper articles.     LC Paper No. CB(2) 1263/03-04(01) PROPOSED RESEARCH OUTLINE The Economic and Social Impacts of Hosting Selected International Games 1. Background 1.1 The Panel on Home Affairs (Panel), at its meeting on 12 December 2003, requested the Research and Library Services Division (RLSD) to conduct a research study on the possible impacts for Hong Kong to host the 2009 East Asian (EA) Games based on the experience of the previous EA Games. 2. Proposed international games to be studied 2.1 RLSD originally intended to study the EA Games held in 1997 and 20011. For comparison, the Asian Games held in 1998 and 2002 were also considered for the study2. Apart from thorough in-house and Internet research, enquiries have been made to the relevant organizing committees and government departments in the host countries for providing the required information. However, only scanty information from official sources has so far been successfully collected on the impacts of hosting the EA Games and the Asian Games. As such, the research will study the 2002 Asian Games and make use of information available from newspapers, magazines and other secondary sources where appropriate. In addition, the 2000 Olympic Games3 and the 2002 Commonwealth Games4 will be included in the study for a better understanding of the impacts of hosting international sports events. 2.2 The study of the 2000 Olympic Games should help reflect the extent of the economic and social impacts that hosting an international sports event could have on a host country, although the scale of a mega sports event such as the Olympic Games is larger than that of the EA Games.

    Great Awards for the nominations sent by Panathlon International to the International Fair Play Committee A shining Budapest on the day of its national celebration in recollection in that distant March 15, 1948, which marked the beginning of the insurrection that led to its first independent government and its first Constitution, welcomed the members of the Council of the Comité International pour le Fair Play for their first meeting of 2019. Among the decisions to be taken, the awarding of the World Fair Play awards. The nominations came from 19 countries world- wide, of these 12 were proposed by Panathlon International: France, Italy and Uruguay the Districts represented. With considerable satisfaction a good quality of nominations were taken into account/registered in all four award categories: Gesture, Career, Promotion and the Jacques Rogge Award dedicated to young people. The preliminary stage for nominations produced by the two Vice-Presidents respectively Mr. Nikolai Dolgopolov (RUS) and Mr. Maurizio Monego (I) has proven to be as always useful at introducing discussion issues. The resulting decisions were not easy due to the validity of the nominations/candidacies and the difficulty of comparing sport and circumstances widely differing from one another. Ultimately, we believe that the true spirit of Fair Play has emerged no matter what/regardless. This fact has led in assigning more than one award with the here below results: Categoria Pierre de Coubertin per il Gesto Awarded two Trophies and 3 Diplomas of Honour A Trophy was awarded to Norwegian Eiving Vold, canoe category athlete who sought doggedly the truth concerning his passing the marker and wasn’t sure of being fair.
