THE SECRET CIRCLE: BOOK OF SHADOWS Note* To avoid confusion please remember that all of the information found here is from L.J. Smith’s SECRET CIRCLE Trilogy: The Initiation, The Captive and The Power books, not the CW’s TV show. New Salem Town Facts In 1693 a year after the Salem Witch Trials ended the real witches left and moved to an island in New England. These original families founded the Town of New Salem. The name Salem was common in Colonial times and comes from the name Jerusalem. In the 300 years since settling in New Salem the original families intermingled to keep their blood pure. Today’s coven consists of the direct decedents of the original families. The human outsiders living in New Salem are descended from the original families hired help, or from drifters that came to the island and were allowed to settle there. The houses on Crowhaven Road belonged to the original coven. The witches of New Salem still occupy the houses today. The homes on Crowhaven Road are mostly in poor condition due to their age with a few exceptions. Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans. -

SPECIAL ISSUE ––– 2006 AEN CONFERENCE VOLUME V ISSUE 1 2010 ISSN: 1833-878X Pages 27-34 Olivia Caputo Water and Stone: The Re-Enactment of the Masculine in the Pagan ‘Reclaiming’ Tradition ABSTRACT This paper seeks to explore models of masculinity present within the contemporary spiritual community of the Reclaiming Collective in San Francisco, United States of America. The Reclaiming Collective is part of the wider contemporary Goddess spirituality movement, a movement which promotes the importance of changing patriarchal images of the divine through focus on the Goddess. Through an analysis of both the writings of Starhawk, the most read and published member of the collective, and the discussions and articles with the collective's long-running journal Reclaiming Quarterly this paper reveals the conflict between patriarchal and more radical models of masculinity. It concludes that the fluidity of gender promoted within the Reclaiming Collective stimulates members to understand masculinity as positive, anti-sexist and multifaceted. BIOGRAPHY Olivia Caputo is a PhD candidate at The University of Queensland's School of History Philosophy Religion and Classics. Her research involves critique of gender theory in the writing of two pioneers of the feminist Goddess movement, Carol P. Christ and Starhawk. Olivia has travelled to both the U. S. and the U. K. to gather material about contemporary Goddess communities such as the Reclaiming Collective in San Francisco and the Priestesses of Avalon in Glastonbury. She has presented papers at the Alternative 27 Expressions of the Numinous conference in 2006 and at the Association for Research on Mothering conference in 2007. Her other research interests include community radio, sustainable agriculture and the alternative D. -

Performance and Spirituality Number 1 (2009) “YOU’VE GOT TO GROW OR GO”: INITIATION, PERFORMANCE, AND REALITY TELEVISION JASON WINSLADE Initiation. The chain of Latin roots reaches back to inire (to go into, enter upon). We begin at initium (an entrance, a beginning) and proceed to initiare (to originate, initiate). Our destination is initiatonem (participation in secret rites). In this brief etymology, we get a sense of beginnings, of origins, of starting a particular action or event, a chain of events, of tradition, but with a touch of the mysterious, of secrecy. Yet this secrecy implies both speaking and not speaking, since the term initiation in phonetics refers to one of the two mandatory aspects of sound production in the human body, the other being articulation. Allow me to articulate. In this context, initiation is the action by which airflow is created through the vocal tract. So it is the act of creating speech, a speaking that at once must be silenced when brought into the realm of ritual initiation, where individuals participate in secret rites, beginning their study of the ineffable, whether it be in the religious, esoteric, or communal sphere. To add a further level, the term initiation is also used in chemistry, indicating a chemical reaction that triggers one or more secondary reactions. So an initiation causes a chain reaction. It creates a process. It does something. Further, it does something through speech. It performs. Ideally, initiation also transforms. It allows for a deeper negotiation between the known and the unknown, offering a seemingly privileged view of the universe to the worthy candidate. -

Wicca Wicca is the term most commonly employed to describe the largest and best-known contemporary Pagan religion. The foundational premise from which Wicca emerged is the (since discredited) witch-cult hypothesis, the idea that the witch trials of early modern Christendom were an attempt not to combat a cabal of devil-worshippers but to eliminate a pre-Christian fertility religion popular among Europe’s peasantry. This theory had developed among nineteenth-century scholars, but only reached widespread attention when it was propagated by the Egyptologist Margaret Murray (1863–1963) in the 1920s and 1930s. When Wicca publicly appeared in the 1950s, its adherents claimed that it was the survival of this witch-cult and that its lineage stretched back into deep prehistory. Although most historians specialising in the early modern witch trials had already expressed reservations about the theory, it would only be firmly demolished by more intensive research during the 1960s and 1970s. By that time, however, the theory had entrenched itself in the popular imagination, particularly within sectors of the occult milieu (Hutton 1999, 132–150). The man often credited with establishing Wicca was Gerald Gardner (1884–1964), an upper middle-class, politically conservative Englishman who had spent much of his life in Southern and Eastern Asia. On retirement in 1936 he returned with his wife to Southern England, settling near the New Forest and joining an esoteric group called the Rosicrucian Order Crotona Fellowship. -

Abstract This thesis explores the relationship between minority religions and American religious pluralism, an ideology which supports religious equality and functions through social norms and legal mechanisms. Examining American religious pluralism’s responses to efforts by nineteenth-century Spiritualists and contemporary Pagans to gain social recognition and political rights produces new insights into the nature of American religious pluralism. I argue that conceiving of American religious pluralism as a project with inherently Protestant Christian investments challenges its ability to support religious equality and exposes the ways in which it actively works to marginalize minority religions due to their inconsistency with the beliefs and practices of Protestant Christianity. The first chapter of this thesis examines how Spiritualism and Neopaganism challenge American religious pluralism’s understanding of what qualifies as a legitimate form of American religion. Chapter two investigates the ways in which Spiritualism and Neopaganism’s privileging of women contributes to their inability to become established modes of American religiosity. The third chapter explores the limitations American religious pluralism places on minority religions’ responses to death. -

On one hand, we have a genealogy that traces the term, “magic”, back to an early modern European Christianity trying to understand itself through contrast with an imagined heresy that comes to be personified with a woman’s face. On the other, we have contemporary political and religious communities that use the identification as Witches to reverse this version of dichotomous Christian gaze and legitimize religious difference, which also comes to be symbolized by a female body. Between these historical moments we have the beginning of the academic study of religion, the theoretical turn in which Christian-dominant scholarship comes to see itself on a continuum with, rather than opposed to, different religions, as first characterized by cultural evolution theories about the origins of religion. Especially given the field’s theological roots, examining the constructed relationships between religion and magic, both of which represent crucial foci for early theorists, through the analytical lens of gender, which does not, provides opportunities to surface implicit assumptions of the current field about what is and is not worth studying.
