New Salem Town Facts In 1693 a year after the Salem Witch Trials ended the real witches left and moved to an island in New England. These original families founded the Town of New Salem. The name Salem was common in Colonial times and comes from the name Jerusalem. In the 300 years since settling in New Salem the original families intermingled to keep their blood pure. Today’s coven consists of the direct decedents of the original families. The human outsiders living in New Salem are descended from the original families hired help, or from drifters that came to the island and were allowed to settle there. The houses on Crowhaven Road belonged to the original coven. The witches of New Salem still occupy the houses today. The homes on Crowhaven Road are mostly in poor condition due to their age with a few exceptions. Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans. -

Ph.D. Introduction Nichole Yalsovac Prophetic revelation, or Divination, dates back to the earliest known times of human existence. The oldest of all Chinese texts, the I Ching, is a divination system older than recorded history. James Legge says in his translation of I Ching: Book Of Changes (1996), “The desire to seek answers and to predict the future is as old as civilization itself.” Mankind has always had a desire to know what the future holds. Evidence shows that methods of divination, also known as fortune telling, were used by the ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians and the Sumerians (who resided in what is now Iraq) as early as six‐thousand years ago. Divination was originally a device of royalty and has often been an essential part of religion and medicine. Significant leaders and royalty often employed priests, doctors, soothsayers and astrologers as advisers and consultants on what the future held. Every civilization has held a belief in at least some type of divination. The point of divination in the ancient world was to ascertain the will of the gods. In fact, divination is so called because it is assumed to be a gift of the divine, a gift from the gods. This gift of obtaining knowledge of the unknown uses a wide range of tools and an enormous variety of techniques, as we will see in this course. No matter which method is used, the most imperative aspect is the interpretation and presentation of what is seen. -

April 22, 2005 iii ABSTRACT PARTICIPATION, IDENTITY, AND SOCIAL SUPPORT IN A SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY Publication No. ______ La Dorna McGee, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2005 Supervising Professor: Frank Weed Paganism is a loosely organized community whose religious ideology incorporates the immanence of Deity. As a religious association with an ideology different from traditional Judeo-Christian faiths, members are often labeled as deviant and subjected to various negative sanctions. By relying on survey data collected on April 9-12, 1996 and in depth personal interviews collected on October 10-13, 1996, this study presents a model that best describes and explains acceptance and participation in Pagan spiritualism. This study identifies three characteristics associated with positive ratings of childhood religious affiliation (church disaffection, family closeness, and iv membership role), three characteristics associated with feelings of belonging to the Pagan community (church disaffection, social support, and participation), and finally examines a member’s disclosure of their Pagan identity as being a function of occupational prestige, weighing the costs of negative sanctions versus the Pagan value of openly expressing a Pagan identity, and self-efficacy. -

Earth-Centered Religions
An Introduction To Earth-Centered Religions History Overview Earth-centered or Pagan religious traditions together constitute a major world religion—but with many unique branches. Paganism has many branches due largely to the individualized ecosystems, pantheon and mythology of the various cultures from which they have emerged. The branches often share their roots in ancient Goddess traditions. They include the pagan and earth-centered religions practiced before the introduction of Christianity as well as a growing and vibrant movement of the 21st Century. Examples of Pagan traditions include: Asatr (based upon pre-Christian Norse religion and mythology); Greek (based upon pre-Christian Greek religion and mythology); Goddess worship (drawing upon different cultures and dating back more than 35,000 years); Druidism (based upon pre-Christian Celtic religions); and, Wicca (reconstructed from pre-Christian Western European religions). Most of the Earth-Centered traditions went underground or vanished during the centuries-long period of Christianization wherein many Pagan holidays and traditions were absorbed into the Christian calendar and its practices. As an example, the Pagan holiday of Eastre celebrated the Goddess of Spring and the idea of fertility (through the symbolism of eggs and rabbits). Eastre became Easter, the Celebration of the Risen Christ. After decades of dormancy, the modern Pagan movement began emerging in the 1950’s. It matured in the context of the ecological, civil rights and womenʼs movements. This emergence resulted in strong ties between Paganism and the social justice and environmental move-ments. Wiccan author and activist Starhawk is a popular articulator of the Pagan tradition. Today Pagan celebrations such as The Burning Man Festival and fictional Wiccan characters such as Willow on Buffy the Vampire Slayer have brought Pagan expression into mainstream pop- culture at a time when the tradition is growing in numbers and in visibility. -

151 Toward a New “Human Consciousness”: The Exhibition “Adventures in Surrealist Painting During the Last Four Years” at the New School for Social Research in New York, March 1941 Caterina Caputo On January 6, 1941, the New School for Social Research Bulletin announced a series of forthcoming surrealist exhibitions and lectures (fig. 68): “Surrealist Painting: An Adventure into Human Consciousness; 4 sessions, alternate Wednesdays. Far more than other modern artists, the Surrea- lists have adventured in tapping the unconscious psychic world. The aim of these lectures is to follow their work as a psychological baro- meter registering the desire and impulses of the community. In a series of exhibitions contemporaneous with the lectures, recently imported original paintings are shown and discussed with a view to discovering underlying ideas and impulses. Drawings on the blackboard are also used, and covered slides of work unavailable for exhibition.”1 From January 22 to March 19, on the third floor of the New School for Social Research at 66 West Twelfth Street in New York City, six exhibitions were held presenting a total of thirty-six surrealist paintings, most of which had been recently brought over from Europe by the British surrealist painter Gordon Onslow Ford,2 who accompanied the shows with four lectures.3 The surrealist events, arranged by surrealists themselves with the help of the New School for Social Research, had 1 New School for Social Research Bulletin, no. 6 (1941), unpaginated. 2 For additional biographical details related to Gordon Onslow Ford, see Harvey L. In that same month, the Architectural Review magazine announced a competition. In April, they had published Paul Nash's article 'Swanage or Seaside Surrealism'.1 Now, in July, the magazine offered a prize for readers who sent in their own surrealist holiday photographs – 'spontaneous examples of surrealism discerned in English holiday resorts'. The judges would be Nash and Roland Penrose .2 At face value, this could be taken as a demonstration of the irredeemable frivolity of surrealism in England (it is difficult to imagine a surrealist snapshot competition in Paris judged by André Breton and Max Ernst ). But in a more positive light, it exemplifies rather well the interest that the English had in popular culture and in pleasure. Holidays were very important in English surrealism and some of its most interesting work was made during them. This essay will examine closely one particular set of photographs made by Eileen Agar in that month of July 1936 which illustrate this relationship between surrealism in England and pleasure. Eileen Agar had been one of the English stars of the surrealism exhibition, even though she had apparently not thought of herself as a 'surrealist' until the organizers of the show – Roland Penrose and Herbert Read – came to her studio and declared her to be one. -

© Lizzie Thynne, 2010 Indirect Action: Politics and the Subversion of Identity in Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore’s Resistance to the Occupation of Jersey Lizzie Thynne Abstract This article explores how Claude Cahun and Marcel Moore translated the strategies of their artistic practice and pre-war involvement with the Surrealists and revolutionary politics into an ingenious counter-propaganda campaign against the German Occupation. Unlike some of their contemporaries such as Tristan Tzara and Louis Aragon who embraced Communist orthodoxy, the women refused to relinquish the radical relativism of their approach to gender, meaning and identity in resisting totalitarianism. Their campaign built on Cahun’s theorization of the concept of ‘indirect action’ in her 1934 essay, Place your Bets (Les paris sont ouvert), which defended surrealism in opposition to both the instrumentalization of art and myths of transcendence. An examination of Cahun’s post-war letters and the extant leaflets the women distributed in Jersey reveal how they appropriated and inverted Nazi discourse to promote defeatism through carnivalesque montage, black humour and the ludic voice of their adopted persona, the ‘Soldier without a Name.’ It is far from my intention to reproach those who left France at the time of the Occupation. But one must point out that Surrealism was entirely absent from the preoccupations of those who remained because it was no help whatsoever on an emotional or practical level in their struggles against the Nazis.1 Former dadaist and surrealist and close collaborator of André Breton, Tristan Tzara thus dismisses the idea that surrealism had any value in opposing Nazi domination.
