From the point of view of many researchers Achaemenid Empire was one the most glorious periods of Persian history. Rezaeian (2004, p.16) argues that Persia on Achaemenid period. ”Extended from the borders of India in the east to the Greece on the Mediterranean, down to Egypt and Ethiopia in Africa and up to what is Russia and Eastern Europe.” It is evident that strong and very effective strategies and laws were set to bring twenty-eight nations together at that time. The main reason to choose and study Achaemenid era from a travelling and tourism point of view is the fact that history reveals that Persia was safe, people and government then were hospitable and the whole nation was politically stable. These elements potentially make Iran, a suitable destination for travelers and tourists and nowadays, highly effective on tourism industry. As the first step, the research seeks out to identify the main strategies related to travelling during Achaemenid era and identify the effects of Achaemenid strategies on travel development then. The researchers’ goal is to find out how to implement these strategies in today’s tourism of Iran. The present research enjoys descriptive method within the framework of historic research methodology. Dates in solar calendar could be calculated by subtracting 621 years from Christian dates. vi Chapter 1. Introduction 1.1. Introduction There are lots of definitions of tourism in different context. Generally, Wall and Matheison (2006, p.1) believe that “Tourism is the temporary movement of people to destinations outside their normal places of work and residence, the activities undertaken during their stay in those destination , and the facilities created and services provided to cater to their needs .“ Within the competitive world of tourism, it seems that presenting a well developed tourism program is of paramount importance to survive the destinations. According to Goeldner and Ritchie (2003, p.439), “Tourism development looks attractive to both developed and underdeveloped countries with the right preconditions- some combination of natural, scenic, historical, archeological, cultural, and climate attractions.” Also, Edgell, et al. (2008, p.17) have discussed that tourism development should be in harmony with the socio-cultural, ecological and heritage goals, values and aspirations of the host community.” Tourism development has a vital image for all countries which have the potential to attract tourism. 1 According to Goeldner and Ritchie (2003, p.441), ”The relationship between tourism and the community, state, regions and countries requires consideration of many difficult issues: the quality of architecture, landscape, and environmental design; environmental reclamation and amenity, natural conservation; land use management; financial strategies for long term economic development; employment; transportation; energy conservation; education, information and interpretation systems; and more.” One country in order to remain in the competitive manner has to focus on the causes that attract tourists to come and stay in the country. The components are quality of roads, transportation, amenity, accommodation, attractions such as festivals, natural and cultural attractions, and recreation. These are the most important factors in tourism development. Iran has a glorious history through the ages and it has a lot of cultural, natural, and historical attraction to motivate tourism. One unique idea that came to researchers’ minds is to focus

The similarity of this city and Ashoka Hall with Apadana Hall in Persepolis in such way that has called it a india persepolis set.

    IRANIAN COINS & MINTS: ACHAEMENID DYNASTY DARIC The Achaemenid Currency By: Michael Alram DARIC (Gk. dareiko‚s statê´r), Achaemenid gold coin of ca. 8.4 gr, which was introduced by Darius I the Great (q.v.; 522-486 B.C.E.) toward the end of the 6th century B.C.E. The daric and the similar silver coin, the siglos (Gk. síglos mediko‚s), represented the bimetallic monetary standard that the Achaemenids developed from that of the Lydians (Herodotus, 1.94). Although it was the only gold coin of its period that was struck continuously, the daric was eventually displaced from its central economic position first by the biga stater of Philip II of Macedonia (359-36 B.C.E.) and then, conclusively, by the Nike stater of Alexander II of Macedonia (336-23 B.C.E.). The ancient Greeks believed that the term dareiko‚s was derived from the name of Darius the Great (Pollux, Onomastikon 3.87, 7.98; cf. Caccamo Caltabiano and Radici Colace), who was believed to have introduced these coins. For example, Herodotus reported that Darius had struck coins of pure gold (4.166, 7.28: chrysíou statê´rôn Dareikôn). On the other hand, modern scholars have generally supposed that the Greek term dareiko‚s can be traced back to Old Persian *dari- "golden" and that it was first associated with the name of Darius only in later folk etymology (Herzfeld, p. 146; for the contrary view, see Bivar, p. 621; DARIUS iii). During the 5th century B.C.E. the term dareiko‚s was generally and exclusively used to designate Persian coins, which were circulating so widely among the Greeks that in popular speech they were dubbed toxo‚tai "archers" after the image of the figure with a bow that appeared on them (Plutarch, Artoxerxes 20.4; idem, Agesilaus 15.6).

    Chapter 1 Baldassare Castiglione’s B OOK OF THE COURTIER: Love and Ideal Conduct Baldassare Castiglione’s Book of the Courtier was quite possibly the single most popular secular book in sixteenth century Europe, pub- lished in dozens of editions in all major European languages. The Courtier is a complex text that has many reasons for its vast popular- ity. Over the years it has been read as a guide to courtly conduct, a meditation on the nature of service, a celebration of an elite com- munity, a reflection on power and subjection, a manual on self- fashioning, and much else besides. But The Courtier must also be seen as a book about love. The debates about love in The Courtier are not tangential to the main concerns of the text; they are funda- mental to it. To understand the impact of The Courtier on discourses of love, one must place the text’s debates about love in the context of the Platonic ideas promulgated by Ficino, Bembo, and others, as well as the practical realities of sexual and identity politics in early modern European society. Castiglione’s dialogue attempts to define the perfect Courtier, but this ideal figure of masculine self-control is threatened by the instability of romantic love. Castiglione has Pietro Bembo end the book’s debates with a praise of Platonic love that attempts to redefine love as empowering rather than debasing, a practice of self-fulfillment rather than subjection. Castiglione’s Bembo defines love as a solitary pursuit, and rejects the social in favor of the individual.

They mainly included Iranian and non- Iranian languages. The process of changes in the Persian language can be divided into three periods, namely , Ancient , Middle, and Modern Persian. The Iranian languages in ancient times ( from the beginning of of the Achaemenids to the end of the Empire) included :Median,Sekaee,Avestan,and Ancient Persian. At the time of the Achaemenids ,Ancient Persian was the language spoken in Pars state and the South Western part of Iran.Documents show that this language was not used in political and state affairs. The only remnants of this language are the slates and inscriptions of the Achaemenid Kings. These works are carved on stone, mud,silver and golden slates. They can also be found on coins,seals,rings,weights and plates.The written form of this language is exclusively found in inscriptions. In fact ,this language was used to record the great and glorious achivements of the Achaemenid kings.

The aS trap Of Western Anatolia And The Greeks Abstract This dissertation explores the extent to which Persian policies in the western satrapies originated from the provincial capitals in the Anatolian periphery rather than from the royal centers in the Persian heartland in the fifth ec ntury BC. I begin by establishing that the Persian administrative apparatus was a product of a grand reform initiated by Darius I, which was aimed at producing a more uniform and centralized administrative infrastructure. In the following chapter I show that the provincial administration was embedded with chancellors, scribes, secretaries and military personnel of royal status and that the satrapies were periodically inspected by the Persian King or his loyal agents, which allowed to central authorities to monitory the provinces. In chapter three I delineate the extent of satrapal authority, responsibility and resources, and conclude that the satraps were supplied with considerable resources which enabled to fulfill the duties of their office. After the power dynamic between the Great Persian King and his provincial governors and the nature of the office of satrap has been analyzed, I begin a diachronic scrutiny of Greco-Persian interactions in the fifth century BC.

Its history dates back almost 5000 years. It is situated at a strategic juncture in the Middle East region of South West Asia. Evidence of man’s presence as far back as the Lower Palaeolithic period on the Iranian plateau has been found in the Kerman Shah Valley. And time and again in the course of this long history, Iran has found itself invaded and occupied by foreign powers. Some reference to Iranian history is therefore indispensable for a proper understanding of its subsequent development. The first major civilisation in what is now Iran was that of the Elamites, who might have settled in South Western Iran as early as 3000 B.C. In 1500 B.C. Aryan tribes began migrating to Iran from the Volga River north of the Caspian Sea and from Central Asia. Eventually two major tribes of Aryans, the Persian and Medes, settled in Iran. One group settled in the North West and founded the kingdom of Media. The other group lived in South Iran in an area that the Greeks later called Persis—from which the name Persia is derived.
