EXHIBITED At Home with Gustav Stickley: American Arts & Crafts from the Stephen Gray Collection, Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, Hartford, CT. October 11, 2008-January 4, 2009

CATALOGUE NOTE Stephen Gray is widely regarded as one of the great pioneering collectors and connoisseurs in the field of American arts and crafts. In 1976, the acquisition of a weekend retreat in Columbia County, New York inspired him to assemble a collection of furnishings that were compatible with the architectural history of the area. He educated himself by diligently researching the original trade catalogues from the period, many of which he was later responsible for reprinting. With an emphasis on the earliest production years of Gustav Stickley, Stephen refined his collection over the last thirty years to represent the very best in furniture, lighting, ceramics, metalwork and woodcut prints. His collection was recently celebrated in the exhibition, At Home with Gustav Stickley: American Arts & Crafts from the Stephen Gray Collection, at the Wadsworth Atheneum, to whom he has gifted a significant portion of his collection. The majority of works presented here were exhibited in this venue. Important 20th Century Design New York, Thu, 17 Dec 09, 2:00 PM, N08604

CATALOGUE NOTE The Hall Chair form is one of the most iconic designs of Charles Rohlfs. The chair's bold silhouette, innovative structure, and extraordinary carved detail defy categorization and exemplify Rohlfs' dedication to individual expression. The recent emergence of the present prototype for the Hall Chair provides an opportunity to examine an exquisite object and to analyze some details about the development of this important form.

The design of the chair stems from Rohlfs' earliest experimental furniture making, in 1897 and 1898, when the designer explored a variety of complex chair forms, including those with latticework leather seats and backs, fretted back splats, and molded seats and aprons. Around this time, Rohlfs began creating a number of examples of this Hall Chair and an accompanying Rotating Desk, which he paired under the name Graceful Writing Set. This pair of objects is the only production furniture of Rohlfs' career. More than twenty examples of the two components of the Graceful Writing Set are known and examples are represented in the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, Dallas Museum of Art, Detroit Institute of Art, Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Milwaukee Art Museum, Nelson Atkins Museum of Art, and Saint Louis Art Museum. The chair offered here is likely the version that immediately preceded the production design of the form.

Structurally and in overall form, this prototype chair is very similar to extant examples of the production chair model and exceptional 1902 and 1904 variants, but it is the only known example of the Hall Chair made in mahogany, usually associated with fine furniture of the nineteenth century. This prototype features defined fretting and elaborate carving common among the best examples of the Hall Chair but because mahogany is more easily carved than oak, this chair exhibits a highly unusual surface that conveys the design with uncommon precision and beauty.

A fully realized version of the Hall Chair form, just short of the final version, this prototype chair conveys the form beautifully but incorporates distinguishing elements that shed light on Rohlfs' design process. The most distinctive design variation is in the ornamental motif in the backrest, where two conjoined elements create the stacked wings in the center, rather than a single split- winged element characteristic of the production models. This chair presents a rare opportunity for a public or private collection to acquire an object that is at the center of Rohlfs' oeuvre but features unique details that would appeal to the most discriminating connoisseur.

Joseph Cunningham, PhD, Curatorial Director of American Decorative Art 1900 Foundation, is author of the Artistic Furniture of Charles Rohlfs and curator of the accompanying exhibition, which is currently touring five museums across the United States. CATALOGUE NOTE As early as 1900, Rohlfs had sought to reach out to a broader market, principally through the development of decorative, useful, and affordable items like candlesticks... Notable are the range of wall-mounted oddities Rohlfs offered, including the Cathedral Sconce, two extant models of which date from 1905. This complex, elegant wall-mounted design features an inventively shaped back plate, exquisite candleholder, and adjustable drip pan. As Leslie Bowman has pointed out, "The repetition of square rivets on the copper face-plate relates to Vienna secessionist design, an unusual reference in Rohlfs's work." She notes that Rohlfs "may have been introduced to Viennese design at the nearby Roycroft community." This wall-mounted version calls to mind not only Viennese design but, again, also Japanese and Chinese design traditions.

CATALOGUE NOTE In the spring of 1903, Gustav Stickley hired a talented architect by the name of Harvey Ellis to execute designs for his Craftsman Workshops. Ellis designed a unique line of furniture distinguished by lighter, sophisticated lines and inlaid decoration articulated in copper, pewter and contrasting woods. In January 1904, Elllis' inlaid furniture was the subject of an article entitled "Structure and Ornament in the Craftsman Workshops" in Stickley's magazine, The Craftsman. Although Ellis died in January 1904, only seven months after joining Stickley, his new designs left an enduring legacy on Stickley's repertoire, which evolved to incorporate lighter structural forms. The iconic desk offered here, along with the rocking chair and "shoe foot" armchair offered in the following two lots, exemplify the harmony and refinement emblematic in Ellis' limited oeuvre. CATALOGUE NOTE One of the most iconic chairs of the 20th century, so much ink has been spilled on the historical significance of the "Red Blue Chair" that perhaps it is sufficient to quote Peter Vöge: "Rietveld reached an unprecedented level of abstraction in this form."

What requires constant vigilance is the dating, description and provenance of each early example of the chair. The original prototypes, designed in 1918 and 1919, were built using hardwoods such as purpleheart and deal (fir), were either unpainted or stained black, brown or red, and were varied in their size, (including "Lady's and Gentleman's chairs") and in some cases included side panels. Vöge catalogues these chairs as a separate design, and then lists as a later entry the "Red Blue" chair of 1922 and 1923 "in recognition of the chair's symbolic position within the De Stijl movement, reinforced when Rietveld applied colour to the design."

At the same time that this famous color scheme of red, blue, yellow and black was incorporated into the design, Rietveld began shifting from solid woods to the use of laminated beechwood (multiplex) plywood seats and backs. Superb examples of this model are in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam, High Museum of Art, Atlanta and the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Many of the chairs from this seminal period were made for artist friends in Rietveld's circle, as well as for immediate family members. As noted in the Stedelijk Museum catalogue, "up to and including the furniture for the Rietveld Schröderhuis, ca. 1924-1930, the designer made most of the furniture himself. After that, they were made under his control by his assistants, especially G.A van de Groenekan." After 1960, van de Groenekan continued to produce examples "in an independent fashion" and later Cassina began a mass-production reissue.

The present example, handbuilt by Rietveld for his family, executed with a multiplex seat and back that is clearly visible through the paint, retains definite amounts of the original red, blue, and yellow paint. At an unknown date in the 1930s-1940s, an overcoat of black was applied. Scholars differ on the reasons why several examples were later over-painted, but the most logical reason is that wear to the original paint scheme, combined with the shifting taste of Rietveld himself, led to this stylistic change of color . In 1988, five examples of the Red Blue chair, including the present example, were consigned by Rietveld family members to Christie's Amsterdam. At this point, cataloguing errors were made and certificates were issued by van de Groenekan that assigned erroneous dates to several of the chairs, including the present one (which was dated 1919). As museums and private collections with an eye towards a permanent bequest have acquired the other period examples over the past decade, this is most likely the last remaining red blue chair from the 1920s to appear on the market. CATALOGUE NOTE

Towards the end of World War II, Gerrit Rietveld took shelter with the Jesse family after having FIG. 1 been sought by the German army at his home in Utrecht. Nico Jesse practiced medicine in Lots 242 and 243 in situ in the Jesse Family Residence Ameide and through his passion for the arts made the acquaintance of many local artists. As a gesture of gratitude, Rietveld built a set of eight "Zig-Zag" chairs for the family. The construction of the chairs was executed by Jacobus van der Vliet, a local cabinetmaker, under Rietveld's direct supervision. The two lots offered here, shown in the photograph above, are part of that original set. These chairs are being sold with a signed affidavit from Rutger Jesse, the son of Nico Jesse, documenting their history. Other designs by Rietveld for the Jesse family are in the collections of the Brooklyn Museum and the Centraal Museum in Utrecht. The furniture designed for the interior was created by his brother, Warren McArthur and KEM Weber. CATALOGUE NOTE In 1928, one of the key prototypes in the history of the American coffee table form was included by Donald Deskey in the "Man's Smoking Room" he designed for the American Designer's Gallery in New York. In a review of the exhibition, Deskey's interior was noted for its bold "utilization of the materials that industrial science has recently developed." The Vitrolite glass top, which would be replaced in later examples by Bakelite, was chosen by Deskey because, as he later remarked, "its resistance to cigarette burns and because it was the only suitable material that could withstand the alcoholic concoctions of that era. John Maxtone-Graham, Normandie: France's Legendary Art Deco Ocean Liner, New York, 2007, p. 206 (for a period photograph showing the present lot in situ in the Grand Salon)

EXHIBITED The Normandie: Floating Art Deco Palace, Bass Museum of Art, Miami, FL, January 15-March 28, 1993

LITERATURE Bruno Foucart, et al., Normandie: Queen of the Seas, New York, 1985, p. 72 (for a cartoon of "The Birth of Aphrodite" mural)

CATALOGUE NOTE Normandie's Dupas panels have long been revered as the holy grail for Art Deco and ocean liner collectors alike. FIG. 1 The present lot shown in situ in the Normandie’s Grand Jean Dupas, son of a Bordeaux sea captain, was asked by the French Line for a composition Salon extolling the delights of Normandy. Instead, the artist created A History of Navigation, encompassing triremes, dhows, men-o-war and paddle steamers; its lower margins incorporated mythological vignettes conjoined with roiling sea monsters.

A challenging site, Normandie's Grand Salon was cruciform-shaped, broken up by five tall windows on each side. It could also be allied with the adjoining Smoking Room by sliding doors. As a result, Dupas was architecturally obliged to break up his oeuvre into four separate, right- angled segments, which he conceived into a series of four thematic murals celebrating "The Birth of Aphrodite," "The Chariot of Poseidon," "The Chariot of Thetis," and the "Rape of Europa." The four murals offered a continuous glittering scene that blended Classical mythology with a secondary theme of maritime history.

Rather than painting canvas, Dupas chose to apply paint to the reverse of glass. An astonishing 32-feet high, his vast murale églomisé derived its name from the eighteenth-century ébéniste Jean-Baptiste Glomy who had perfected the technique for decorating picture frames. The process is time-consuming and demanding: highlights, traditionally final adornments, had to precede the layering in of back painting. Dupas was invaluably assisted by églomisé specialist Charles Champigneulle who enriched the artist's outlines with layers of black, gold and platinum washes. The finished work was heroic in scale and gloriously luminescent.

Each mural was essentially a mosaic, assembled from dozens of glass panels, anchored by bronze brackets at their corners. That composite form was, in a sense, the mural's salvation, in that the completed work could not only be removed piecemeal from Normandie before her fatal February 1942 fire but could also be dispersed in small, separate consignments. Whereas some collectors content themselves with single, isolated panels, the ten in the present lot enjoy the irreplaceable advantage of pictorial contiguity. Originating from the mural's topmost level, masts, rigging, bellying sails and fluttering pennants of a seventeenth-century warship are juxtaposed against a lowering Breton sky.

The largest collection of Dupas panels extant was donated to New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, preserving for posterity an entire corner of Normandie's Grand Salon. Recently, museum preservationists had to reinvigorate the eroding adhesion of paint to glass; new fixatives were devised and applied that would not obscure the Dupas/Champigneulle mise-en-scêne. The ten panels offered here remain in prime condition.

CATALOGUE NOTE The present model was designed in 1958 for inclusion in the Dutch pavilion at World Expo in Brussels. This strikingly minimal design was the result of Gerrit Rietveld's collaboration with his son. Wim later remarked "I tackled it with my father, and working together we complemented each other well. He had a good eye for shapes and proportions, while I was good on the technical side. So he was the designer and I was the one who made it." Begun in 1956, this chair was designed to be stacked and linked in multiple. The "Mondial" chair received the compasso d'oro award at the 1957 Triennale in Milan. The original plan for Expo 1958 had included 105 "Mondial" chairs, however an alternate chair was selected prior to the chairs being produced and only five prototypes were exhibited. The prototype for the "Mondial" chair incorporated an aluminum seat, which was later modified by Gispen, and produced in polyester. Given the complexity of the structure and costliness of the production, Gispen executed few examples of the chair. At the time of the design, Wim Rietveld was employed by Gispen as an industrial designer, and he later left the company due to disagreements over the production of this chair. Examples of the "Mondial" chair are in the collections of the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam and the Centraal Museum, Utrecht. Important 20th Century Design New York, Thu, 17 Dec 09, 2:00 PM, N08604
