Acquisition Information The UCSB library's collection of Wayne Andrews architectural photographs were acquired through subscription directly from Wayne Andrews by William Treese, first head of the UCSB Arts Library. Biography / Administrative History Wayne Andrews was born in 1913 and raised in Illinois, graduated from Harvard (1936) and earned a PhD in art history from Columbia University in 1956. He held a succession of positions, and in 1964, accepted a position at Wayne State University, Detroit, as the Archives of American Art Professor. Andrews wrote many books on architecture, focusing primarily on many aspects of American scene. He took photographs wherever he went in the United States and Europe. He retired from Wayne State in 1983, and died in 1987. Scope and Content of Collection The photographs include American and European architectural images totaling four thousand one hundred eighty-three images (4,183) two thirds of which are of American architecture and the rest European with a small number of images from Mexico. Digital images of these photographs, plus 13 additional images (total of 4210) can be viewed through ARTStor database accessible via the UCSB Library's website. Arrangement 94 boxes of photographs. Photographs are listed by box. General note Photographs are desribed by plate number, name of building, location, architect, date, and Andrews Series Number. In many instances, the listings will include building type and style in parentheses.
