Born in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico in 1943, he is a Bronze-star decorated Vietnam Veteran, a father, and grand- father. He is one of the longest-held political prisoners on the planet today. In 2013 he began writing to his granddaughter Karina the series that would come to be known as Cartas a Karina. These are the letters of a man imprisoned for the crime of “seditious conspiracy,” the thought crime of wanting to see Puerto Rico free of foreign domination—the same kind of charge railed at Gandhi and Man- dela. He has maintained his political vision and humanity despite 35 years of dehumanizing imprisonment, and is widely regarded as the Mandela of Puerto Rico. López Rivera is a prolific writer as well as an accomplished and respected painter, a vocation begun during twelve years of solitary confinement. The compelling content, lan- guage, and often lyric quality of Cartas a Karina make this bilingual collection an indispensable reflection on Puerto Rico’s status, the plight of the Puerto Rican diaspora, and the dehumanizing condi- tions behind US prison walls. Most of all, Cartas a Karina stands as an eloquent and irrefutable argument for Oscar López Rivera’s immediate and unconditional release. But the fact she was born safe and sound and that Clarisa was ok, although she had to have a c-section, was a great relief. And better yet was finding out she chose to meet the new world on a day that’s very significant to me and i hope to most of humanity. From that day on i do a double celebration of May 1st - International Workers’ Day. One for the proletariat who have sacri- ficed so much, and one for her. After i got the news i started wondering how happy Carmen Valentín, her paternal grandmother, was when she found out that her first grand- daughter was born. Both of us were in prison. She was in FCI Dublin and i was in USP Marion - at that time the most notorious and most se- cure penitentiary in the USA. Conditions there were so bad that Amnesty International labeled our imprisonment in that gulag as a legal crime. i got to see Karina for the first time 40 days after her birth. She looked lost in a bundle of blankets. i looked at her as close as i could, trying hard to see her hands, her feet and how she looked, but i didn’t get to see her hands or feet. i saw in her face a strong resemblance of her father Tony Valentín. It was his first visit to see me. The last time i had seen him he was only 6 years old. And while looking at the three of them i started to remember playing with Tony when he was a baby. 8 Cartas a Karina While i couldn’t touch Karina because i didn’t have contact visits, for Abuela Carmen it was a different situation. She could hold her, play with her, and take photos with her. The relationship Carmen was able to forge with Karina was a real good one from the very beginning. i was always happy when i would get photos of the two together, but conscious that Carmen was only getting prison visits like me, and that the good- byes had to be very painful for her. It was not until i was transferred to Terre Haute that i got my first contact visit with Karina. But since she wasn’t used to be touched by me, she looked skittish during the first contact visit. But little by little she relaxed and we started playing the same hand game we had played during her visits at Marion and ADX-Florence, but now our fingers would touch each other. After that visit i started thinking how big of a difference there was between the times she had visited me in Marion and in ADX-Super Max in Florence, Co and contact visits. i have kept a copy of the first photo Clarisa, Karina and i took together during the first visit. After we had more visits she started to warm up to me. When Clarisa couldn’t bring her, friends would do it. And one of the games she liked playing was UNO. i had never played the game and i didn’t like card games, but she got me into it. One of the most inter- esting parts of the game was noticing how much she loved winning. i enjoyed observing her while playing UNO, especially when i would try to make it difficult for her to win just to see her reaction. i noticed she had a strong competitive spirit and thought that was a good characteristic for a girl to have. In 1999, Carmen was released from prison. For me that was a blessing. i started to worry less about Karina’s future. Carmen had been a teacher and was real good with her students. So i knew that she would prepare Karina well for her future. She was enrolled in a private and prestigious school. That was not of interest to me; my main concern was her future, being strong in mind and spirit, and the values Carmen would instill in her. When she enrolled in a Taekwondo class i thought that was a great idea. It was important for her to learn to defend herself and develop all the necessary confidence she would need to make it in a world where women faced more challenges than men. Cartas a Karina 9 One funny thing that kept on happening from the moment i got her first photo was that no matter how hard i tried to draw or paint her i couldn’t capture her looks. i believe i have only done a couple of drawings and two paintings of her that i like. And i know she feels the same way. i have stopped trying to paint her. Because i want to do it when she sits for me and i can do it while looking at her. At first i had hopes i would be able to attend some of her school gradua- tions. But when she graduated from high school and i was still in prison i started to hope that i would be able to go to her college graduation. She graduated from the University of Chicago, and i was still in prison. She got her master’s degree, and now she will be entering dental school. So maybe this time i’ll be able to be there when she graduates. i have seen her grow for the first 25 years of her life. But that’s a quarter of a century that i have not been able to spend with her.
