Statement should give date of adoption and/or last revision. The mission statement of the Department of Tele Radial Communication was revised in 2019. It states the following: Develop in students the capacity to understand fundamental concepts and basic principles that govern the communication industry and its professions. One of those basic principles is a firm compromise with freedom of speech, access to information and rejection to censorship. 7. What are the type and length of terms? Division Street, Chicago, IL 60622 • www.boricuahumanrights.org • [email protected] Oscar López Rivera Freedom Campaign People of conscience in Puerto Rico and around the world – including prominent figures such as Nobel Laureate Desmond Tutu, acclaimed novelist and activist Arundhati Roy, and philosopher and public intellectual Cornel West – have joined their voices in support of the immediate release of the longest held political prisoner in Puerto Rican history. Oscar López Rivera, 71, has spent the last 32 years of his life in U.S. prisons under torturous conditions, isolated from his people and his loved ones, and punished for his internationally recognized commitment to the independence of Puerto Rico. A community organizer, decorated Vietnam veteran, father and grandfather, he is serving a 70-year sentence for seditious conspiracy, the exact charge levied against South African freedom fighter Nelson Mandela. In López Rivera’s case, he participated in the struggle to end the U.S. colonization of Puerto Rico, which began in 1898 at the conclusion of the Spanish-American War. Though he was not convicted of harming or killing anyone, he has served more time in prison than many people convicted of violent offenses. Moreover, his co-defendants - released in 1999 by a presidential executive clemency – are produc- tive, law-abiding members of civil society. An international campaign is currently calling on U.S. President Barack Obama to immediately commute the sentence of Oscar López-Rivera. In 2014 – the thirty-third year of his incarceration – this campaign is launching a new initiative: Scholars for Oscar López Rivera.

Alejandro Molina. © 2016 Oscar López Rivera and Clarisa López Ramos Oscar López Rivera is a Puerto Rican political prisoner held 35 years in U.S. prisons. Born in San Sebastian, Puerto Rico in 1943, he is a Bronze-star decorated Vietnam Veteran, a father, and grand- father. He is one of the longest-held political prisoners on the planet today. In 2013 he began writing to his granddaughter Karina the series that would come to be known as Cartas a Karina. These are the letters of a man imprisoned for the crime of “seditious conspiracy,” the thought crime of wanting to see Puerto Rico free of foreign domination—the same kind of charge railed at Gandhi and Man- dela. He has maintained his political vision and humanity despite 35 years of dehumanizing imprisonment, and is widely regarded as the Mandela of Puerto Rico. López Rivera is a prolific writer as well as an accomplished and respected painter, a vocation begun during twelve years of solitary confinement.

This year marks the 120th anniversary of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Puerto Rico during the Spanish-U.S. war, which ended with the U.S. cap- turing Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines and Guam. July 25, 1898, was the day when U.S. ships, com- manded by General Nelson A. Miles under orders of President William McKinley, landed in Guánica on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. However, little is said about May 12 of that year, when 11 U.S. military ships bombed San Juan on the north- ern coast. This fact is important to remember, since the apologists for colonization want to dismiss the violent nature of the U.S. invasion.
