This year marks the 120th anniversary of the U.S. invasion and occupation of Puerto Rico during the Spanish-U.S. war, which ended with the U.S. cap- turing Puerto Rico, Cuba, the Philippines and Guam.

July 25, 1898, was the day when U.S. ships, com- manded by General Nelson A. Miles under orders of President William McKinley, landed in Guánica on the southwestern coast of Puerto Rico. However, little is said about May 12 of that year, when 11 U.S. military ships bombed San Juan on the north- ern coast. This fact is important to remember, since the apologists for colonization want to dismiss the violent nature of the U.S. invasion.

It was clear from the start what the U.S. had in store for Puerto Rico. This was exposed in a speech Gen. Miles gave in Ponce, just three days after the invasion.

El movimiento independentista puertorriqueño acudió este domingo 23 de septiembre una vez más al montañoso pueblo de Lares, a conmemorar los 150 años de una revolución inconclusa, la gesta del Grito de Lares. La conmemoración contó con una tarima en donde hubo espacio para todas la diversidad de organizaciones patrióticas, una asistencia mucho mayor que en los pasados años recientes, como parte del esfuerzo de la campaña, ―Todos a Lares‖, la alegre presencia de ar- tesanos, un taller de grabado, la venta de libros, y una fuerte lluvia al tiempo que finalizaban los actos en tarima.

Previo a la actividad en tarima, a media mañana el Partido Nacionalista de Puerto Rico (PNPR), Movimiento Libertador, llevó a cabo su marcha desde el Puente del Anón hasta el Cementerio Municipal, para el cambio de banderas y ofrenda floral. De allí los cadetes de la República del PNPR se dirigieron en desfile hasta la Igle- sia Católica de Lares para la celebración de su tradicional misa como celebraron los revolucionarios de 1868. Terminada la misa se realizó la ceremonia de la Logia Gran Oriente Nacional (LGON) ante el Obelisco en la Plaza de Revolución, donde renovaron las banderas de Puerto Rico y Lares, como cada año.

El maestro de ceremonia, el actor Luis Enrique Romero dio la bienvenida a la mul- titud agrupada en la Plaza de la Revolución para dar paso a los diversos repre- sentantes de las organizaciones que se unieron en la conmemoración. Otro de los oradores presentes lo fue el ex prisionero político, Norberto González Claudio. El presidente del Partido Revolu- cionario de los Trabajadores – Macheteros (PRT-M) quien estu- vo en el clandestinaje durante 15 años, avivó a los presentes a seguir el camino de Betances, ―que hacen los puertorriqueños que no se revelan‖.

En tanto el portavoz del Frente Socialista (FS), José Rivera ex- presó que durante 150 años de lucha y resistencia primero Espa- ña impidió la independencia y luego Estados Unidos desde la invasión en 1898 ha hecho todo lo que ha estado a su alcance para impedir y evitar la independencia del imperio. Respecto al trabajo político que requiere el independentismo atribuyó que las agrupaciones existentes ―no hemos sabido organizar mejor el asalto al futuro‖ y entre otros señalamientos de autocrítica dijo que era exagerado pretender que sin organizarnos de manera política se pueda salir de la colonia. ―Tenemos que organizarnos aunque sea imperfectamente -y poder reclamar nuestras op- ciones de futuro‖.
