So must it be for St. Dominic himself — he who dreamed of going to pagan mission fields and longed for martyrdom! St. Dominic’s dream was not fulfilled, but his spiritual children did not forget it. Many of them also dreamed of the missions and of martyrdom. Since Paul of Hungary and his companions died for the faith in Poland in 1241, the Order has never been without missions and the missions have never been without martyrs. The Province of Our Lady of the Rosary was specifically founded in 1587 for the missionary apostolate envisioned by St. Dominic. The then Master of the Order, Father Hyppolytus Mary Beccaria stated: “The Province incarnated the authentic spirit of St. Dominic.” This is why there has never been a lack of martyrs in the Province since its founding. History testifies to the abundance of them — thousands of them in various areas of its missionary field. The martyrs have been of many nationalities and from all social classes. Unfortunately, for many of them no records exist; only their names are known. Those whose biographies are contained in this volume are among the better known and documented. They contain an important Dominican Martyrology of the Far East. Some of the martyrs in this collection are from the Province of Our Lady of the Rosary, but many others come from other Provinces of the Order. The Province of the Rosary has the honor of presenting this Martyrology — on the occasion of the celebration of the IVth Centenary of its founding — to the entire Dominican Family and to all others who treasure the missionary vocation. In the early centuries of the Church it was said that the blood of the martyrs was the seed of Christianity. Let us pray that the examples of courage and strength of the martyrs will preserve the faith of God’s people in the places where they evangelized. We hope, too, that our apostolic commitment will likewise be strengthened and that the seeds of missionary vocations will flourish. GUILLERMO TEJON, O.P. Provincial Province of Our Lady of the Rosary Hong Kong, 10 June 1988 -iv- PROLOGUE On the occasion of the IVth Centenary of the founding of the Dominican Province of Our Lady of the Rosary, we present short biographies of the martyrs in its missionary territories of Japan, China, and Vietnam. Innumerable lay Christians suffered martyrdom for the faith in those countries, along with many foreign and native missionaries. There were Lay Dominicans, members of the Confraternity of the Rosary, innkeepers, benefactors, and other faithful from every walk of life and social stratum. They gladly followed their shepherds to death in witness to the Gospel. Of the one hundred and seventy- four of them who have been officially beatified by the Church, 76 have been canonized. From the opening of the first mission in Japan in 1602 by Father Francis Morales and his four companions, up to 1637, the Christian religion struggled to spread the Gospel. Many priests and laypersons followed the example of the first Dominican martyr, Father Alphonse de Navarrete, who was executed in 1617. The torments suffered by the Japanese faithful were especially painful and cruel. During the period following the official suppression of the missionaries in 1637, the faith went underground. Thanks to the organization and evangelization activities of the Japanese faithful, it was possible to keep the seeds of the “good news” alive, albeit in hiding, until the “hidden Catholics” were able to come out in public around Nagasaki in 1865. 2015 AGENDA PAOLINA con riflessioni quotidiane dagli scritti del beato Giacomo Alberione Anno LIX © SASP s.r.l., 2014 Copertina di Mario Moscatello, ssp La Basilica di San Pietro trasformata in aula conciliare (1962-1965).

  • VOWS in the SECULAR ORDER of DISCALCED CARMELITES Fr
VOWS IN THE SECULAR ORDER OF DISCALCED CARMELITES Fr. Michael Buckley, OCD The moment we hear the word “Vows” we think automatically of religious. The “vows of religion” is a phrase that comes immediately to our minds: vows and religion are always associated in our thinking. Indeed, for religious men and women, vows of poverty, chastity and obedience are of the very essence of their vocation. Regularly vows are made after novitiate, and again a few years later; the only difference is between simple (temporary) and solemn (perpetual) vows. So it is a new concept when we encounter vows in the context of a Secular Order as we do in Carmel. Yet, the exclusive association of vows with religious people is not warranted. A glance at the Canon Law of the Church will illustrate this. The Canon Law speaks about vows in numbers 1191-98, just before a chapter on oaths. Our Secular legislation makes no reference to the Canon Law when it speaks about vows. That is not necessarily a defect or lacuna in our Constitutions. Our legislation is in accord with sacred canons, but it is essential to be familiar with these. Let me summarize the chapter. It begins with a precise definition: “A vow is a deliberate and free promise made to God concerning a possible and better good which must be fulfilled by reason of the virtue of religion.” Then it goes on to distinguish vows which are a) public, i.e., accepted in the name of the church, b) solemn or simple, c) personal or real, d) how vows cease or are dispensed, etc.

  • Martyrs and Confessors of Lugdunum: a Validation of Eusebius’S Documentation
122 Scrinium 11 (2015) 122-134 Ohtani Journal of Patrology and Critical Hagiography www.brill.com/scri Martyrs and Confessors of Lugdunum: A Validation of Eusebius’s Documentation Satoshi Ohtani Research Fellow, Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, Tokyo, Japan [email protected] Summary In 177 AD, the persecution of Christians in Lugdunum increased. The sole extant account of this persecution is a letter preserved in Eusebius’s Ecclesiastical History. However, because of his daring excerpting and muddled terminology, the understanding of the situation of martyrs and confessors of Lugdunum is confusing. In addition, another source about the persecution, Collection of the Ancient Martyrs, was scattered. The pur- pose of this article is to organize the situation of the martyrs’ deaths and to validate how Eusebius recorded the martyrs and the confessors. For this purpose, I compared the fragments of the martyrs’ lists preserved in the Martyrology of Pseudo-Jerome, the Mar- tyrology bearing the name of Bede, several Passions, Glory of the Martyrs by Gregory of Tours, and Ecclesiastical History by Eusebius. Besides, I analyse the categories of martyrs in the reconstructed list of the martyrs of Lugdunum. As a result, it clarifies the way Eusebius constructed the list of martyrs. This article also contributes to the understand- ing of the terminology and documentation concerning martyrs and confessors in early Christian documents. Keywords Eusebius Ecclesiastical History – early Christian martyrs – Lugdunum 1 Introduction In this short paper, I address the Christian persecution that emerged in Lugdu- num in 177 AD. • February Feast Days.Pub
FEBRUARY 2013 FEAST DAYS Saturday, February 2 — Presentation of the Lord This feast commemorates Mary’s purification and the presentation of Jesus in the temple. In the Middle Ages, a tradition began of blessing candles and holding a procession of light on this day. As a result it is also known as “Candlemas”— Christ our light has come to us. We also remember the first members of the Bordeaux Sodality who made their first act of consecration on Feb. 2, 1801. Wednesday, February 6 — Saint Paul Miki and Companions In the late 16th century, 26 martyrs of Japan were crucified on a hill. Brother Paul Miki, a Jesuit scholastic, is the best known among these martyrs. When missionaries returned to Japan in the 1860s, at first they found no trace of Christianity. But after establishing themselves they found that thousands of Christians lived around Nagasaki and had secretly preserved the faith. Beatified in 1627, the martyrs of Japan were canonized in 1862. Friday, February 8 — Saint Josephine Bakhita Josephine was born around 1869 in Sudan and raised in the Islamic faith. She was kidnapped as a child by slave traders who gave her the name “Bakhita,” meaning “lucky one.” She was purchased by an Italian consul who brought her to Italy. There she lived with the Canossian Sisters in Venice and was formally introduced to the faith, baptized, and eventually granted her freedom. In 1896 she joined the Canossian Daughters of Charity. She died in 1947. Pope John Paul II canonized this first Sudanese saint in October 2000. Monday, February 11 — Our Lady of Lourdes This memorial honors the mystery of the Immaculate Conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary.
