Weekly Highlight: Fr. Giovanni

Greetings to everyone!

My name is Fr. Giovanni Nguyen. I was born in Saigon, . I had my forma- tion under the in Vietnam and was ordained to the Deaconate in 1996. In 1998, I went to Italy to further my study and work for the Dominican Order in Rome, Italy. In 2000, I was ordained to the priesthood. My fellow Domini- can brothers here in Italy used to call me "Padre Giovanni" and that name has stuck with me until today. In 2004, I moved to Houston and stayed with the Vietnamese Dominican Fathers at Our Lady of LaVang's Church. In 2010, I became a diocesan priest of the Archdiocese of Galveston-Houston.

My first assignment was at Vietnamese Church from 2010 to 2014. From 2014 to November 2017, I was assigned to St. Michael's Catholic Church in Lake Jackson, Texas. Now, my third assignment is here at St. Cecilia Catholic Church, where I have already met so many hospitable and lovable people. Parish The motto that I used to share with my previous parishes was, “God has a plan for Administration: each and every one of us!" In His providential plan, God has brought me here, to Daisy O’Halloran St. Cecilia’s. I feel as if coming from the countryside, everything seemed so new to Director me. I am very blessed to have Fr. Francis and Fr. Michael who both have shown me [email protected] around and guided me to help make the transition easy and smooth. I have also met the wonderful and kind staff members. Jorge Cardenas Associate Director [email protected] Some have asked me about my vocation. My parents sent me to a boarding school ran by Catholic nuns when I was six years old. I stayed there until I finished ele- Lloyd Waguespack mentary, after that I went to a middle and intermediate school ran by St. Vincent de Accountant Paul's priests. I was thinking to myself, had I stayed longer with the nuns, I might [email protected] have become a nice 'nun' by now ha! My real vocation formation was under the Elaine Rossi Dominicans, the Order of Preachers and now, my most recent vocation is here at Parish Secretary St. Cecilia. [email protected] I am very excited and happy to be here. This area reminds me very much of Rome, Mirta Garcia where I used to live. I hope, with your help, that I will be able to serve you well Parish Receptionist [email protected] here, at this 'Little Italy' parish. Pastoral Council

You’ve probably heard of the Pastoral Council, but you may not know our role or purpose. Our is to offer counsel to Fr. Francis on Pastoral matters, particularly regarding the spiritual growth of the members of our par- ish. Pastoral Council is advisory only; we do not vote or have any power to make decisions. Our members are the “eyes and ears” of our fellow parishioners.

Our guide is the Pastoral Plan, which was completed in June of 2015. It is a 5-year plan that is in various stages of being implemented by our dedicated and caring Pastoral Staff.

Here at St. Cecilia, the Pastoral Council is comprised of 12 members, each serving a 3-year term. Four members are discerned each year to serve, and four members “roll off”, or complete their term. New Pastoral Council mem- bers are determined through the process of discernment. Discernment consists of prayer and reflection and the opportunity to offer a response to a series of questions related to the church, St. Cecilia, etc.

We will be discerning new members on Saturday, January 27th, 2018 beginning at 9 a.m in the school li- brary. The names of our members and our e-mail address are always listed on the front of the bulletin. It is a privilege to serve St. Cecilia and represent you, our parishioners. If you have any questions about Pastoral Coun- cil, or discernment, please contact us at [email protected].
